There any reason why we cant have animated avatars so long as we keep it within the 64kb size limit? I spent an hour making a slick one based on the one i am currently using only to find out i cant use it =(

I was under the impression it was because nobody likes them. I await someone else to come in and link to a random Destructoid conversation, though.

ah well this one would have to do, the idea was to make the C and M in my avatar alternate red black to highlight the letters within the hexagram, its no big deal though was just playing around with some of the new toys in photoshop CS4, +++ adobe for finally getting all of imageready into photoshop seemlessly!

While I get why some people would want them, we all know there'd be an asshole who'd use the most obnoxious GIF possible.

GeoCities was shut down yesterday, destroying millions of animated GIFs. Please, let's do our bit in conserving the Internet and not add more.

How would it be any different than loading 50 avatars (~2k) per page already? I would assume there would be something like a 5-10KB size limit.

For the record I don't really see the point. Avatars are enough

There can be like a 30KB or less limit, that's enough to make some pretty slick avatars...

Animated graphics are one of the most obnoxious things the Internet has ever produced. An avatar in itself is fine, I like them, they sit there doing nothing to offend the eye. Animated ones would make me turn off avatars, and that would suck.

I came into thread just to say pretty much that. I guess I can be lazy and it still gets done though, so it all works out.

I'm a firm believer that the only things that should be animated in a web page is the main content (if required, and even then I should ideally have to click something for that to start) and things I am interacting with using my cursor (if required.) Every thing else should be static.

If we do get the ability to choose animated avatars, then there needs to be a checkbox in your profile that you can hit to show only non-animated profile avatars.

I seriously laughed out loud at each one of these posts. I never thought I'd get so much joy from reading a thread titled "animated avatars."

This is how I feel about it. I don't want to turn off avatars, but if animated gifs were allowed, that's exactly what would happen.

If we want to be more like NeoGAF, why don't we just take the server down at random times throughout the day and make new members wait forever for their accounts to get approved.

(I appreciate the creativity behind some animated GIFs, but used as avatars, they can be pretty obnoxious.)

Necro-post, but with I vowed to change my avatar when the Lost box set came out and no matter what I use, .gif or .png the background transparency doesn't persist once I upload my image...I keep seeing a white background on old Jake.

Anyone else run into this...I see lots of people who've uploaded a .png with a transparent background. The image background is transparent on my PC, but something is getting lost in the upload process.

Weird, gif or png, the image I upload to CoG has a transparent background, but once it's uploaded and I go to a thread I've posted in and save the image from there, it has a white background.
