We use to have threads for movies of the week. I think this is pretty much one for gamers. RT says it's garbage, and IMDB says it's pretty good. Are you going to see it? If you saw it what did you think?

I'm planning to see it this weekend. I figure it will most likely be enjoyable. I don't put much stock in the scores on Rotten Tomatoes, they rank about a hair's breadth above worthless to me.

I am seeing it this weekend. Looking forward to it but not holding my breath for anything groundbreaking.
Max Payne 2 is one of my favorite games ever, but I have long since resigned myself to putting no faith in movie translations. Hopefully this won't follow that trend.

So, did anyone actually go to see this? Is it uber-violent or on par with The Matrix or its ilk? I've got one of the people at work who would like to see this with me tomorrow and while we're willing to sit through a cheesy movie that evokes the spirit of the games, we don't want to waste our time and money seeing something awful (and it can't be exceedingly violent either)...
But if it can at least moderately capture the vibe of the games, well, I don't mind seeing it.

I plan on seeing it eventually. Dunno if I can make it this weekend though.

Ug. Did some poking around and it doesn't even look like it gets a pass on being cheesy bad. On the one hand, I'll get to spend a chunk of my shift tomorrow watching this movie... on the other hand, I'll have to spend a chunk of my shift watching this movie.
I'm not sure whether I should talk the guy out of dragging me to see it with him or not. Sigh.
EDIT: Thanks Psykoboy. I'm actually leaning a little more towards wanting to see it again now after reading that other thread. It might be bad, but if it's at least pretty, I can handle it.

There's a thread on this going already. It's 99% shit, that 1% being the cinematography was good. They cut out everything that made Max Payne awesome and turned it into a long, slow, and stupid crime drama.
He doesn't even kill anyone for like a fucking hour.

Well, it's all moot now. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I'm not going to the movies today... Oh well. Even if this was bad, I'd be getting paid to sit through it but what can you do?

This movie was crap. It's like someone crossed Sin City with Constantine and then took a big dump on it. And lit it on fire.

I enjoyed it, but probably only because I'm in the minority that feels that if a film based on an action game was made with identical pacing and storyboarding, the movie would (usually) be a pointless mess. Nobody is going to want to watch Max run around apartment buildings shooting random V-Heads for 75% of the film.
While it's not a perfect film by any means, it actually stayed true to it's source material a hell of a lot more than most game films have in the past.

I am planning on going to watch this flick tonight on cheap night at the local cinema. You guys take on this thus far has me erring on the side of caution. Kinda already booked it to go with my buddy tonight though and I haven't gone to the movies since Dark Knight so it's good to go out I suppose *shrugs*. Here's to hoping it's not as bad as you are all panning it out to be.

I wonder if this hinders a Max Payne 3.
I think people wanted a flashback in the beginning with a dead wife and then an hour and 30 minutes of pure action. That probably would have kicked ass too. Reminds me of a comic strip about a movie of pure action.

I wanted a good story with plenty of action, the first game provided both. I see no reason why they should have fucked with the story from the first game, besides the writers thought that they could do it better. They couldn't.
Casting was also shit.
The action was about the only good thing, and for a movie titled Max Payne it took entirely too long for the guns to start firing and there wasn't nearly enough.

Was there any Lords and Ladies?

No Lords and Ladies, no Dick Justice. Not even a passing reference.
I get the impression that even the writers just had thier assistants play the game while they watched, rather than actually exploring the game's world or story to find out why it would make such an appealing movie.

I hate how previews are nothing like the movie. So basically from what you guys are saying, preview shots are taken from the last portion of the movie. Is this better than The Punisher? Or Hitman? I remember thinking Hitman and The Punisher were lacking in action for being what should have been an action movie. I am still curious enough to want to see Max Payne though. And I really wanted it to be good. Considering Hollywood is competing for your gaming bucks, it is no surprise that movies based on games are shit. They don't want them to be good.

I liked Punisher though because it was all about him getting ready for all of the action at the end in an interesting way.

Jay, Hitman and Punisher, IMHO, are far superior movies. And I am constantly replaying the Max Payne games. I was disappointed with Hitman, and thought Punisher was a little too cheesy, but goddamn did MP bore the hell out of me.
What's strange is that I look forward to seeing all of the movies that were previewed before Max Payne. The new 007 movie, the new Punisher movie, Rocknrolla, and The Day the Earth yadda yadda. I usually moan and groan terribly during previews.
