I unlocked Meltdown yesterday and I've been trying to at least get a medal in every event to get the awesome chrome skins. I'm not sure if my poor controller is going to make it though.
After I quit my job this week I'll be more available at night for some online racing if anyone out there is interested.
Anyone beat Zico yet? :)

I JUST beat Uplift yesterday or the day before. I'm slowly working my way up.
Granted, I think that's further than I ever got in Pulse.

The multiplayer was silky smooth when I played it the other day. Thankfully I got assigned Host after one of the other hosts bailed and it was nice. I'd just start a race whenever I had 4-5 players instead of waiting... and waiting... and waiting to get a full 8. I was quite impressed.

If you've never played any of the previous games, it's a hellacious learning curve, but yes it is a very addictive game once you're good enough to stay off the walls. More than worth $20 IMO.

Yes, I agree a million really seems like a plausible number of times on some tracks. Sometimes when you feel you can't do anything different to get faster laps, revise your tactics and try new things. Boosting over downhill corners can be a good idea, with a barrel roll while airborne to get an additional boost when landing. Sure, it's hard to pull off, but you can shave several seconds off the lap time if you're lucky.

Those chrome ships look great... guess I gotta get back on the campaign. I put it aside because I've become obsessed with trying to beat Zico. I've got my time down to 31.40 but I can't get to 30.82, so I think I need to try a new strategy.
Also, I'm going to try and use a joystick instead of the pad... might help with barrel rolls but will make airbrakes a bitch.... if it even works.
I quit campaign for a bit because I was trying to Michael Phelps that bitch... but I am going to settle for a few silvers just to medal in everything initially. On Speed Freak right now.

I've needed to give them a very brief tap here and there going around that first bend.... I've noticed if I hit the first boost going into that left and then side-shift on to the inner of the two speed pads, then back out the last one, I get a great exit speed out of the corner... but yeah I'm still trying to see if I can find a better line through it. Also, they come in handy when you need to make a tiny correction coming off of the ramp at the back straight (there you go up onto the narrow straight path). You have to pull a barrel roll as you come off of that ramp onto the narrow path, and so far getting consistency there's been a real problem for me... which is why I wanna try a stick (thumbs lock up after 90 laps or more of that).
KidCactus
10-02-2008, 01:19 PM
Where are you using your boost? I use it first just before the start/finish line to get "two" boosts that lap, and the the other one in the second/third corner, barrel roll in the air, and try to land spot on the speed pad at the bottom of the downhill corner. It's hard to pull off, but that's what at least givs me a lap time less than 32 seconds.
I've heard that you're supposed to use it even earlier than that, more or less just after the first corner, over the small bumps, but I just can't get that to work at all.

You're talking about using at that really narrow downhill where the track turns yellow, right? The chute, as I like to call it. If so, that's where I'm boosting... the left at the top of the hill, so I can barrel roll high in the sky and land on that speed pad in the narrow chute. And the other boost of course right at the start/finish line, because I think it's impossible to get a good time without that.
Link... someone needs to teach me how to embed. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeTmo2EMWQ8)
This shows a way to do 4 barrel rolls at the expense of hitting some of the speed pads I currently hit, but I can never get that little flip at the top of the chute to work... haven't tried this one too much, though. Thinking it may be a better way.
Ah.... here we are - The proof... and a better look at how to pull that barrel roll. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O877da7BrTs&feature=related)
Also... there is some scraping in that video.... looks like Zico's time can be improved on even further.

I got my lap time down to 31,46 now, boosting right after the first corner, with a barrel roll, and boost again and another barrel roll while in the air. Close to impossible to pull off, and on my latest 100 laps the fourth lap was my fastest, so it seems practice doesn't make perfect for me; after that it all just went downhill.
Doing a barrel roll UP onto the ledge is impossible for me, I've tried it the same way as in the video but it just won't happen.

You have to go all the way to the right of the ramp. More right than the actual ledge is, and then barrel roll as soon as you clear the ramp. I can't do it consistently, and that's annoying as hell when I'm ahead of my pace for the rest of the race and blow it on the barrel roll there.

Hm, I guess I'll just have to keep trying then. But as you say, not pulling it off ruins the whole lap. The biggest problem I have is to get all three pads in the first corner since I'm coming into it with the boost. And again, not connecting all three kills the whole lap, in the first couple of seconds.
Btw, it seems like they have reset the lap records. My 31.46 tonight landed me on first place.

I can consistently get into the 30.xx range now, but can never pull that critical barrel roll going up onto the ledge on those laps where I'm ahead of my ghost. It is nice, however, to have a ghost with a time like that, because I have a good meter now for telling whether or not I'm on-pace.
I'll probably do it on Sunday, but last night I made my thumbs so sore I couldn't pull barrel rolls anywhere on the track anymore. Felt like Xerxes or something.

That is just so annoying, failing at some point on the lap, since it takes another two laps (=another minute) to be able to give it a go again. I'd love to see a practice function, where you could practice on parts of any track.

I'd love to see a practice function, where you could practice on parts of any track.
Me too! Oh, and by the way the path in the youtube videos I linked to is a lot easier than the way I was doing it before, hence the better consistency. I just need to tweak the line I take for the first curve and the two before the ramp, and I'm set.
Remember to pull back and pitch up the nose when you hit your boost on that long straight with the two little bumps. If you do that, your ship will stay airborne all the way to the curve, and not boost until it hits the ground of course, which gives you the speed you need to pull that second barrel roll down the chute. It takes some practice but once you find the sweet spot you can nail it almost every time.
Once you know the line it's really not that hard... but at the same time it IS, since I still haven't done it yet. I won't get to play tonight or tomorrow though, so I don't think I'll be the first colonist to get the trophy.
I'm king of the world... pardon the pic taken with a cell phone, though.

I finished the campaign a few nights ago so I decided to give Zico a try. After 200+ laps my best is 31.64. Whoever the hell "Zico" is, he deserves to be shot (as long as you don't consider the fact that he helped develop one hell of a racing game). :)
Anyway, I'm close enough to know it's possible, but I can't consistently get the BR onto the ledge shortcut either. I'm only doing 2 BRs right after the first turn and I know 3 are possible, so I think I'm going to work on that instead of wasting time on the shortcut BR.
One tip that got me an extra few tenths off my time: sideshift off the shortcut and BR onto one of the boost pads instead of trying to just drive off of it and BR. Helped me to be able to do that more consistently, but YMMV.
Good luck... this is one hell of a challenge.

Awesome! How did you end up doing it? 3 or 4 BRs? Which ones did you do?
I pulled 4 BRs on the lap. Used the previous lap's boost over the line, then hit my own boots on the first straight (after the sweeping left with the 3 boost pads... a.k.a. the first corner). Firing the boost right between the two bumps while pulling back on the pitch allows you plenty of BR time, and lands you right around the little uphill chicane. Using the boost from that first BR should put you airborne at the top of the chute (that narrow downhill straight)... BR 2 goes there, and should land short of the speed pad, allowing you to hit it. After that it's a slow trip through the right and the double-apex left leading to the ramp and straight ledge on the final leg of the course. BR 3 comes on the way up to the ledge, and BR4 comes when you drop down off of it. I found that counting "One-thousand one" after the 4th boost on the ledge then dropping off the left was a good strategy for getting that 4th BR off in time to hit the last speed pad, but you do have to be careful not to drop too early or you'll miss the track.
I know there's a way to get a 5th BR in there but I am now sure if it's better than a clean line off of your first boost. Going to experiment with it some since I still need Loyalty points, but for now I plan to focus on rounding out the gold medal collection and earn some of the Racebox-oriented trophies.
However... while working today I did at least earn my chrome...

What the fuck is Zico? I'm going through campaign.
Basically the story goes "while working on the game we all had a little internal contest. Anulpha Pass, Venom, Forward, Piranha, Speed Lap. We competed with one another to see who could post the best time, and spent a lot of time trying to find the best line, all the barrel roll opportunites, etc. We had so much fun doing this that we decided to make a trophy out of it, and let the winner of our own internal competition name the trophy. Zico Liu is the guy that had the best time when the game was done being made, and so he named the trophy after himself."
Personally I think that the time is probably Zico's second best time, as they wanted to make sure it was at least earnable, unless Zico really felt that even his own time could be beaten. It was a great, if not frustrating, challenge for me to undertake, and honestly it feels really good to have gotten it. I hope I can help you guys do the same. Now if only I could earn more golds in Campaign. Got all of them through Speed Freak, but those last two tiers are BRUTAL.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm doing, but I've given up on the 3rd BR (the one onto the shortcut platform). I just can't hit it reliably. I'm down to 31.33 and I'm pretty sure there's enough room for improvement to get the trophy without that 3rd BR, but it's going to be tough. Someone on Wipeoutzone claimed they made it with only 2 BRs, but I don't think I'm that good. :)

I finally made it to tier 7 on easy yesterday. I still suck, but considering my abilities I'm pretty satisfied :)

I finally took the training wheels off the other day. I agree that it's a lot nicer when you can hug the corners without the auto-correction kicking in.

That barrel roll, at least for me, has proven to be absolutely critical. On laps that I was ahead of my ghost, no matter by how far, it would always pass me if I botched that barrel roll up onto the ledge. Therefore, don't give up on it! The farther to the right you get the easier the BR is to pull off, but you have to remember to aim slightly to the left as you leave the ramp so you don't miss the ledge entirely. Do a bunch of practice laps to focus solely on that back half until you're comfortable enough with it to hit it consistently.

So, which "vehicle" do you guys prefer? I started of with Assegai, but now I'm in love with the Piranha.
BTW, I fucking hate Sebenco Climb. Hate it, hate it, hate it!!!

Raaage, raaaaaaaaaage! I fucking hate this game. HATE!
I've spent another 100 laps trying to Beat Zico, but I've now realized it just won't happen. I managed to BR up onto the ledge four times. Four times out of maybe 150 tries (since I get out of bounds trying). It drives me crazy and It's not even fun any longer, and I think me being this pissed off is starting to also piss my girlfriend...

I'm a wildcard so far. I'll ride any vehicle. Shield is a must though, the way I hit walls.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm CONFIDENT it's possible without the ledge BR, but every time I'm outrunning my ghost I choke coming off the ledge towards the finish. This is driving me nuts...

I think you'll get it on your next session. Having that ghost makes it a lot easier because you know that as soon as you pass the ghost, you're on-pace for the trophy. That's a great time, though. I can't get below 31.15 without that ledge BR, so you'd probably be in 31.55-65 range if you pulled that off.

Yeah I think there's still a little room for improvement in the first 2 BRs. I always choke when I pass my ghost though...
I'm pretty sure I've put over 500 laps into trying to beat this guy now...

Ok, i've been a gamer for as long as I can remember...
I've beaten the likes of some of the hardest old (and new) school games out there. However, as I get older I find myself leaning towards the "easy" or "Novice" setting so that I can enjoy a game through it's entirety without punishing my fingers or thumbs, or breaking poor helpless peripherals.
But I must say that Wipeout HD has me thinking that I no longer have "Video Game Prowess" and I find myself wishing for a "State Employee" setting!
This game is kicking my ASS like Kimbo Slice would if he found me with naughty pics of his mama

Hilarious. Here in IL though that State Employee setting would have to double the game's volume and blow up the graphics so you can see them more clearly. Oh... and the game would have to run at quarter speed. All the State Employees in this state are like 90 years old, blind, deaf, and slow as molasses. I don't think you want a setting like that!
Nice avatar too... it's out of this world.

From Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/10/wipeout-hd-patched-for-popular-players-may-require-save-deletio/)
"If at any time you have had over 50 users in your friends list whilst playing Wipeout it is possible that your saved data has become corrupted. If this situation applies to you, we strongly recommend once this update has installed you quit the game and delete your saved data using the saved data utility in the XMB, then relaunch the game to create a new profile. Deleting your Saved Data will not affect your collected trophies or online records, but will reset your campaign mode progress, team loyalties, and in-game settings." [Emphasis ours.]
I'm not sure what to make of this

Sounds like it would be better to check and see if your save data is corrupted before deleting.

I think I just have 49 people on my list and I've had no problems with the game so far, so I guess I'm safe then. :)
