So, King's Bounty. Released last month.

1C and Atari weren't prepared for the popularity, and they've run out of stock.

Apparently, us Canucks are out of luck until December until the earliest. So, I've bought the game through Gamer's Gate.

Yay, another fucking client on my system. Just what I always wanted.

No..nooo...Amazon (http://www.amazon.ca/Atari-27593-Battlelord-Kings-Bounty/dp/B0012N2AB6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1224197626&sr=8-1)will come through...I know it....right? RIGHT?

It's funny, I was just looking at the Amazon site a few minutes ago to see if it had come into stock yet. Apparently it hasn't :(

I think I'll have to do what you are doing and go Gamer's Gate as well...with the same reluctance as you. I was thinking of maybe ordering directly from Atari (http://www.atari.com/us/games/kings_bounty_the_legend/dvd_rom), but I'm unsure of their cross-border policies.

Last game I bought from Gamersgate took over 2 days to download. One of their support reps told me they were at the end of their patience and would be handing over development of their downloader to another company. The one they have now sucks donkey balls.

Nowhere but GamersGate? They are an OK service. And I have to say that given the size of games and the unreliability of most web browsers with large packets, Firefox sucks right now for large downloads, I prefer a manager.

But GG just blows.

Can't they just make up some more copies of this thing? You would think that would be an option. Or is it that you just don't want to wait for them to do that?

Says on Amazon.com it will be available on Oct 19th.

Do they not ship to Canadia?

I use Gamersgate pretty regularly and don't have issues. I think as anything you download, some will have no problems and others with have issues. Steam was that way for me.

That Oct 19th date is apparently a filler. No one knows when more stock is going to be released.

As for shipping to Canada, they do, but it's $25.

I too have not been a fan of Gamersgate, beside the client I have found the downloads to be slow and often disconnect forcing me to restart the download. After buying one thing from them I don't get anything from them anymore.

Well it says In Stock now and usually that means they have them ready to ship.

If you have friends in the USA it would probably be cheaper to have them buy it and ship it to you than paying $25, but I could be wrong.

King's Bounty is great, I was lucky enough to pick up the only copy that has come to my local EB when they unpacked it. They haven't even had another copy come through.

Problem solved, don't have to run GG anymore unless I need to redownload the game.

Well there's the problem. It's too busy sucking balls to get anything done. They need to put a stop to that.

Dang, I thought you were joking about the shipping. I recently got some HD-DVD's that cost next to nothing to ship. Must be due to the dimensions of the game box :(

Just to weigh in on GG, I bought Puzzle Quest off them a while back, shortly after the PC version was released. Everything worked fine (with the site), downloaded fast, set it up...

CTD in the first 5 seconds, then the game wouldn't even load anymore. Just an hourglass, then nothing. I asked the head Dev for Inf. Int. on their forums about it, and he had me send my files to them so they could figure out what was going wrong. Apparently, a lot of people who DL'ed through GG were having the problem.

According to him, GG had altered the game's exe without their permission. He had to fix/make a new game exe and e-mail it to me for testing. Luckily, it worked. His distaste for GG became pretty apparent through our communication. Caveat emptor.

The demo is pretty long, but it is so small compared to the full game. I have put in around 60 hours and am in the final area, but probably still have 5-10 hours left.

Tease.

So, it's not randomized maps then, eh? Just a nice long story? Either is fine, it's such a great looking game.

I feel like I need to avoid GG mainly due to how patching is handled...

jpublic
10-17-2008, 05:13 PM
Yeah, their patching is odd. You have to download the patch seperate from the game, and install it yourself.

What really bugs me about GG is they don't clean up after themselves. I don't need the 2GB download anymore, I've installed the game.

I didn't have too much trouble with the DL speed. Took me 2H. I'm just amazingly bitter that I was stuck between paying 1.5x as much as the game cost, or getting it though a 2nd-rate download service.

Heroes of M&M, but only focused on one hero, you. You go around doing quests etc...Think of it like HOMM, but more zoomed in :)

Colourful game that runs great, loads up quickly and lets you alt-tab in and out to your hearts content (ie...very stable). One of those games that I have running in the background and I play a few battles as a break from homework/work.

No issues at all. There is a patch for it that I downloaded, so I'm not sure how it performs "out of the box", but the at the state it is in, it runs without issue (so far).

This game is like crack to me. I finally got into playing it over Thankgiving weekend and I must have blown at least 20 hours questing around and it doesn't look like I'm anywhere close to finishing.

Harv

The game is challenging too. Whenever I get into a new area I usually have to be very cautious about what groups of creatures I attack. Even now I still have to do that and I consider my guy to be pretty badass.

Yah...they like to sprinkle some pretty hard monster sets among some easy ones...highlighting and checking how hard the enemy before attacking is a must.

Definitely a very long game. I've felt like I've barely touched it. It's something that I've let fall onto the backlog listing...I did eye it this weekend, but didn't get around to it :o

I will repurchase this game on Impulse or Steam just so I can say 'Fuck you' to Gamersgate and never use their shit again.

I'm in the 4th(?) area - where the elves are. I'm kind of irritated by how much this game is weighted towards big critters. When I was in dwarf lands with Giants and Cyclopses and tougher dwarf troops, I rarely had to recharge my army. Now that I'm in Elf-ville with the their hordes of minions, I have to replentish my guys every 2-3 combats.

Harv
01-26-2009, 06:54 PM
It's definitely a financial balancing act and at times I had to go hunt around for creatures I hadn't killed in easier areas to make some dough to buy more creatures.

It did help near the end when I realized I could sell all the scrolls I had been collecting for the whole game. Also helped that I got the skill pumped to the max that allowed me to sell them for more money. That made me about 300k gold.

Money isn't my problem. Really.

I mean, I gain stupid ammount of skills to advance my ability to command human troops, but it's of limited use unless I want to run back to Ze King every couple combats - which is a pain in some of the later areas. You're better off using local troops in every area, simply because it's so much *faster*.

My dream team? Giants, Cyclopses, Dragons, Inqusitors (for the Rez) and Ancient Ents.

First I love Gamersgate and hate to hear about anyone having problems. That sucks. As for King's Bounty. Amazingly fun game. Really well done and one of those games you can play while listening to your favorite music and just sit back and enjoy. Good times.

Well, one can technically buy it directly from Atari. I was going to go that route eventually before stumbling across it in a store. They offer direct download or a shipped copy (surprisingly, both are the same price).

Once you open up the two backup slots where you can carry additional armies it becomes less necessary to go back to the castle all the time.

I found though that even in the later stages it wasn't very far to go to get back to the castle. Though it's a bit of a pain once you get into and through the Labyrinth you might as well use local troops at that point.

Meh, I think dragons are a bit too expensive and generally you get better bonuses for working with non-neutral creatures. There isn't much that pumps up dragon stats.

The ability to attack 2 enemies at a time, as well as the line of flaming unblockable death makes dragons awesome.

No doubt their abilities are nice, but I still think the cost is too high and there are too few places to get them until later in the game. Same deal with the more powerful demons.

I'm playing through again as a mage and feeling out the differences. There are various new things that pop up when you change classes. I finished the first time with a knight.

Yay, another fucking client on my system. Just what I always wanted.

It looks like they listened to you :D

I got this email from them a little while ago.

GREAT NEWS FOR GAMERS!

Starting today GamersGate will offer its entire catalog "client-free". The old GamersGate Client will be available for one more week.

From now on You can login to Your account (My Games) and download the games direct following the instructions. Instead of using the Client to download Your games, just click the "download" button on each individual title you have purchased.

Q. Will I have to download all my games again?

A. No, only if you have uninstalled a game and want to install it again.

Q. Can I uninstall the old GamersGate Client?

A. Yes you can.

Q. So from now on I just login to my account (My Games) and download the games I’ve purchased direct from the account, without having to use the Client?

A. Yes, that’s correct.

Q. Will GamersGate keep the old Client and support it?

A. We recommend everyone to stop using the Client since it will only be available one more week.

Enjoy!

Told you I'd do more business with them. Downloading an old adventure game called "Still Life" (from the makers of Syberia). It's coming down at quite a lick with no need to use that fuck-awful downloader.

Gamersgate is even more convenient that Steam. Very dangerous.
