View Full Version : iGoogle re-design

If anyone uses iGoogle as a homepage you may have just noticed a re-design. It's kind of cool....you can see a brief text description under the articles now, inline gmail functions and the Home tab. At first I thought the home tab was just in the way till I started playing with it. Hit the + sign and drop down the items you have on iGoogle. Just click on one of those to see a full screen view of the contents. I'm liking this new redesign.

In-widget gmail actions was long overdue, I love it.

I don't like it. I preferred seeing expanded text of only the object in the feed I clicked on. Now you either see all or none if the brief descriptions for all feeds. I also dislike the tabs on the left side. It is not as clean as before and wastes space. I have no need to see what widgets are in the tabs I am not using. I made them. I know what is in each tab.
The changes to the Gmail gadget are nice though.
EDIT: I checked the igoogle groups and it seems allot of people are not hapy with the changes in the layout.
EDIT 2: looks like they put it back to the old style for now.

I am getting the new style.
I guess I will get used to it.
It seems to be messing up my Stylish for iGoogle.

I like the features, but I would prefer the option to turn the home tab off, I prefer the look/real estate it offers by not being there.

Like the new features and extra info displayed in the widgets. Do NOT like the home tab being useless and squishing everything over, on my wide screen at home that's fine but on the tiny screen at work... hate.

the extra features are nice, but I too hate the squishiness of the home tab.. moving it up top or something would be nice.

I definitely preferred the old style for tabs, but the new widget features are nice. Google's pretty good at listening to feedback so I'm sure they'll work out a solution.

This thing messed me up earlier. Was sitting at work minding my own business and everything was normal. We decided to head out back to the hoop for the afternoon game of p.i.g. and when I came back my homepage was all different, I was very very confused wondering who had been tinkering with my machine. It's way too busy now, i wish I could turn off the brief descriptions and just get the titles back.

Yeah overall, what really gets me, is the lack of user control. You can't turn this stuff off and on, which just seems wrong. Heck, g-mail still has it's "older version" link you can click. Why the iGoogle team has to be so dictatorial is beyond me.

That is one thing you actually have control over. If you select your home tab and edit it, it is one of the options near the bottom.

Thank you, I was trying to set it on each feed.

I was randomly selected to test out the new format a couple months ago. I've gotten used to it but I still don't like it as much as it was. I wish they would give us the option to keep the old format.
Of course, I wasn't selected to test the GChat widget for the iGoogle page. That's something I'd love to have! It's coming at least.

I'm using a different URL to get to my homepage that gives me back the old style.
The big problem I have with the brief descriptions is that it is all or none. Before I could have it show only the titles and then expand just one title and read the whole thing right there without leaving the page.
There are several different ways to get the old stile back that can be found here (http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Web_Search_Help/topics). Most are only temporary.

I used to use iGoogle, but haven't done so for a while. I may go back to using it again.
Do we have a feed for CoG news posts yet?

Yup, I added it last week.

Yup, I added it last week.Is there a page that has the URL for the feed(s)? I can't find one anywhere. I can just add CoG to Google Reader, and it gives me http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/external.php?type=RSS2, which looks to be all posts, not just news items.
