As I am embarking upon a 10-hour road trip today, I am stuffing my MP3 players with various goodies to enjoy on the ride.

What kind of music do you listen to on the road? Which albums, songs, or artists do you find most suited to driving music?

Zeppelin is always a good choice of music for road trips. For me, the type of music I listen to in a car is usually different based on whether I am driving or riding. If I am driving, I like to play something really loud and fast. Not that I drive all that fast, but it just makes things more exciting. I also like to play stuff I like to sing along to. If everyone else is listening to it anyway, might as well get some extra vocals. :P

Now, if I am riding, I tend to listen to some slower stuff. Something that won't keep me awake or wake me up if I do fall asleep. I also try to listen to stuff that I don't know all the words to, so I don't look like a fool singing to myself.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the radio on long trips. And when there is no radio available, well then I roll down the windows and enjoy the wind in my hair.

I don't like the radio for long trips because you never know what you'll find or if there will even be music you want to hear.

For some reason, whenever I take road trips I either listen to a bunch of STYX or a bunch of Queen. Like Sandman, I bring along my iPod, but those are the two groups I end up playing.

I don't like the radio for long trips because you never know what you'll find or if there will even be music you want to hear.

That's the exact reason I like it, if it weren't for that, my music repertoire would be rather boring.

I remember stumbling on "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds" (http://www.thewaroftheworlds.com/) on a long trip from Ottawa to Windsor many years ago.

Same goes for "Pitman - It Takes a Nation of Tossers" (http://www.ukhh.com/bhh/artists/pitman-it_takes_a_nation_of_tossers.htm) a few years back. :)

I sync a whole load of podcasts including TWiT (this recent episode (http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/aolradio.podcast.aol.com/twit/TWiT0163H.mp3) is very good), Platform Biased, and All Songs Considered.

Also: Black Sun Empire, NIN, Refused, Imperative Reaction, mind.in.a.box, and Phillip Glass.

My favourite driving songs are influenced by the fact that I am in the passenger seat looking out the window. Never felt the need to get a drivers license as everyone around me has one. The music I like to listen to in cars is quite slow and suited for say driving at night, so with that in mind:

Death in Vegas - Dirge
fuFSblQkPMY

Sigur Ros - Milano
xFDFLxCDKKs

Panda Bear - Bros
jwwlCSHo50o

Caribou - Dundas, Ontario

Desert Sessions Volume I: Instrumental Driving Music for Felons
I mean, it has it in the name. If you like what you heard in the video, there's a lot more where that came from. The first two sessions are a LOT like that.

If I'm driving, I almost always will listen to "Open Road Song" by Eve 6 and "My Favourite Game" by The Cardigans.

They get me in that "road trip" mindset.

One of my top five favorite albums: "Odelay" by Beck.

I also enjoy listening to David Bowie during road trips and singing along.

Muse, any album, though Black Holes and Revelations works great for me. Knights of Cydonia specifically for a long stretch, Take a Bow and Starlight for a one-two punch at anytime
Boston
AC/DC, nothing like doing 80 while listening to Thunderstruck
The Rock Band or Guitar Hero soundtracks, tailored to what songs you liked, naturally
Daft Punk, Discovery or Alive 2007 are personal favorites
GTA: Vice City V-Rock soundtrack
80s Hair Metal bands, or the "Power Rock" compilation CDs
Anything Top Gear uses in the episodes
2001: A Space Odyssey
David Bowie, any period, though Diamond Dogs works very well (just to be specific)
Styx
Star Wars soundtracks, 6+ hours for the original trilogy alone

The answer for today's road trip was:
Talking Heads: 77 by Talking Heads
Guerolito by Beck
Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin
Hello, Dear Wind by Page France
Now It Can Be Told: DEVO at the Palace by Devo
Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project by David Arnold
and a live concert by The Apples in Stereo from NPR

When I am driving, I like to listen to CCR, or old Metallica, an audiobook, or I just shuffle and skip around. For some reason though, back when I first started college and was driving home a lot, Sonata Arctica's "Winterhearts Guild" would always be the cd I listened to. Dont even know why, its just fun and passes the time.

Old school Metallica like "And Justice for All" and "Master of Puppets" is great driving music. Especially if you're an angry driver like me.

Here's a list for the road I recently put together:

Hey, Kids! -- Antarctic
Paseo la Salamandria -- Antarctic
Skeleton (Everybody's Favorite) -- Astronautalis
Vicinity Of Obscenity -- System of a Down
Bloodstone -- Amon Tobin
Glósóli -- Sigur Rós
Infamous Date Rape -- A Tribe Called Quest
Cold Beverage -- G. Love & Special Sauce
Silver Lining -- Rilo Kiley
Avalanche Patrol -- Astronautalis
Integraation -- Venetian Snares
Unemployed Black Astronaut -- Busdriver
17 Summers -- Astronautalis
M79 -- Vampire Weekend
Apologies to Insect Life -- British Sea Power
Dizzy -- The Goo Goo Dolls
Snow Brigade -- Mew
Fire Away -- Jupiter One
Comforting Sounds -- Mew

Almost exactly 1:20, too -- fits right on a CD with no space to spare.

And the playlist for my return trip today was:

More Songs About Buildings and Food by Talking Heads
Hello, Dear Wind by Page France
Various Positions by Leonard Cohen
Absolution by Muse
Comfort Eagle by Cake
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Science Faire by The Apples in Stereo

A pretty fair trip, I must say.

Absolution by Muse

Muse rocks my socks.

Especially Micro Cuts...it's my favorite song of theirs. I just love the operatic/rock hybrid. Absolution is great too, for when you are a little more mellow.
