Joystiq has word that Far Cry 2 is shipping with the same activation-based SecuROM DRM made famous by Spore.

Purchasers have up to 5 activations on 3 separate PCs
Uninstalling Far Cry 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/far-cry-2) "refunds" an activation; this process is known as "revoke" (as long as you properly uninstall the game, you'll be able to re-install it an unlimited number of times on the 3 machines)
A computer can be upgraded an unlimited number of times (using "revoke")
Ubisoft is willing to provide additional activations, if necessary
"Ubisoft is committed to the long-term support of our games: you'll always be able to play Far Cry 2"

I just went from shopping for new video cards for this game to removing it from my list of fall purchases.

If the Steam version comes without SecuROM, I'll reconsider. Until that time, I'm not going to support DRM schemes which do nothing for me as a legitimate consumer.

Unfortunately, non-valve titles that have been released w/ SecuRom, tend to do the same on Steam.(Bioshock, CoH)

Yeah, this is becoming the norm. And I am not happy with it. Sticking it to the honest PC gamer. Honestly, I have had no issued thus far, and it was even nice not needing a DVD in the drive for Warhead. But considering I am a No-CD whore, that is usually not an issue for me anyways. I'm more worried that I will not be able to play a game that I bought and paid for and therefore own in several years when and if I decide to go back for a rerun. Its like I will need to keep this current PC just for the "classics" in a few years. I'll end up with 5 PCs hooked up to a KVM switch just to keep PC gaming. Or I will just give up on games all together:( These are trying times. And they really need to rename SecuRom to something more realistic like AssRape.

Oh and I was planning on getting this for PC too. I figured it is a FPS, and will most likely have good community mods. Seems like the logical way to go. But damn, every game for PC this year has this shit. It is almost like I am paying $50 to rent the damn thing.

I really don't have a problem with how this is set up. Unlimited installs if you uninstall it, and up to 3 PC's at the same time seems pretty fair to me. It was the 3 installs and you're out that was the big problem. If I can uninstall and install as many time as I upgrade or feel like it, then I'm ok with it.

And they say you'll always be able to play it, sounds like after a few years they will release the patch to remove the DRM. I'm not worried at all on this one, also buying off Steam so again, I'm good to go.
