View Full Version : [Rumor] Rare Bringing Back Killer Instinct?

This one gets the DRT (dreaded rumor tag), so take all necessary precautions. Apparently Rare is working on a new Killer Instinct game.
I know, I know, that tidbit has been grist for the rumor mill pretty much since the day Microsoft bought the studio. But more and more recently it seems like Rare themselves are the ones subtly teasing the existence of this game. Eurogamer points us to a series of KI vs. VP cards (http://www.rareware.com/games/vivapinata-trouble/cards.html), which when scanned by the Xbox Live Vision Camera will unlock features in the new Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise game. What exactly does that tell us?
The significance lies in Rare having teased the past two Killer Instinct installments in other games: the first in Donkey Kong Country 2, and the second in Diddy Kong Racing. For those who never played it, Killer Instinct was a fighting game for the SNES and N64 which boasted a lot of blood and combos which seemed to go on for hours. It also had what was for the time a pretty unique design sense and style.

Didn't they just say they have no desire to go there?

I liked the first KI. KI2/Gold, not so much. If they can make a good KI again, I'd buy it.

Well like MK they'd have to first learn to break that old school rigidness they use to have.

Rare does not have the creativity to do something new with a franchise they haven't touched in 10 years.

I liked KI when it came out as well, but I was in a kind of Fighting Game phase. For a stretch of a couple years, thats all I played. I cant get into them anymore though.

This is a fact.

Also, hasn't this rumor been killed like thirty-nine times? It just keeps popping up!

I'm pretty sure, yes.
Maybe this rumor is just that, only a rumor. However, seeing as how often game devs swear up and down "We aren't porting to X system" and "X franchise is dead" only to turn around and do exactly that...I'll wait and see.

Never saw the appeal of Killer Instinct. At the time, it did look cool with the way they did the graphics, but I felt like it played like a clunky fighter. Of course, I loved Virtua Fighter, so I had my own issues ;)

Don't care.
There's plenty of other terrific stuff to play. Too much, in fact.

In Trouble in Paradise, there's an accessory hair style you can buy for your pinata that is Chief Thunder's mohawk. The description says something like "an arcade game washed up on the shores of Pinata Island once--the third in the series. One of the characters had this hair style which all the pinatas loved..." etc, etc. They do like to tease.
But how is the new Banjo game not different enough? I thought people were shitting on it because it was too different.

Never played the original Banjo games. Never owned an N64. That said, the new game looks very appealing to me. nice, big colorful world to play in, and the ability to build my own vehicles? Yeah, that sounds like fun. :D

They should not only make a new Killer Instinct game, but a new Blast Corps as well. That would be a BRUTAL COMBO!!

As a fan of the fighting game genre, I do like how KI stands out. I would definitley buy another KI. But what I'd really like to see is another Eternal Champions.
But again...this is a popular rumor. Who knows?

Make it 2D and put it on XBLA.

How are you beating my argument that I don't trust them to breathe new life into an ancient franchise by citing a new IP?

Make it 2D and put it on XBLA.At this point I think they'd put the original(s) up on XBLA if they could, but they may run into the same legal hurdles that Goldeneye did.

Hmm. That's probably a good point. I know I'd buy it in a heartbeat, though. Goldeneye did have the double whammy of not only having the issue of it originally being on the N64, but the movie license as well. But, with BK coming to XBLA soon, that can be overcome.

I think it's pretty much about who owns the IP, not what systems it was on. I'd say Conker, Banjo, KI and Perfect Dark are probably all possible, and I don't expect to see anything of Goldeneye or any games with a Nintendo character in them.
edit: I don't think it was the movie license, Gorvi - I'm pretty certain the problem is that another game company holds the rights to release Bond games.

Ahh, that's a good point about the Bond license, I hadn't thought of that. But Rare must own the KI license, they've used the characters in marketing material and no in VP2. There must be some issue, though, I really think it would have come out by now if there weren't.

Seems odd - if anything, KI was made when Rare was LESS of a partner to Nintendo than BK.
A fairly reasonable explanation would be that they are making a new KI, and saving the original for an XBLA release near the release date of that game.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was referring to their creativity, in reference to your original post (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=30944#post30944) on the matter. I'll also state that (so far) Banjo looks to be very creative.

The problem with Goldeneye is Nintendo still has say in the release (non-original IP makes the 'game' Nintendo's property?). We know it's done for XBLA, but Ninty won't let it see the light of day.
I would love to see KI Gold released on XBLA. But, a whole new game would be better. We don't get many fighters, and the ones we do are always the same, (DOA, Tekken, MK, SF, SNK) which I have no problem with.

I really doubt that it's Nintendo holding up Goldeneye's rerelease. More likely it's Activision or Sony, the holders of the James Bond license.

You're absolutely right, but what the world does need is another Bloody Roar game. Although unlike the one on GC this one should actually have blood and not just sparks.

i wants GOLDEYE just release it on PS3 360 and Wii
Rare have been teasing KI3 for just about a decade now (or thereabouts) It's just one of those things they like to hint at to annoy the fans, like button codes or Stop N Swap. Bastards.
Also, no re-release of Goldeneye please. While I consider it one of my favourite games ever made, it really hasnt aged well.

Aren't they doing something new with Nuts and Bolts? You can argue whether or not Rare is making additions that will successfully revive the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, but it just seems cheap (and false) to argue that they are doing nothing new.

Was KI a big hit in the USA?
Around here was so difficult to find it on the arcades that I don't think many people actually played this game. I only played a few times at arcades and I didn't find too much fun, at the same time, around 1994 I think, I spend a lot of coins on “X-Men:Children of the Atom”.
Rare does not have the creativity to do something new with a franchise they haven't touched in 10 years.
But they do something new with Banjo Kazooie and...it's a bad thing?
The definition of 'hard to please' right here.
