Does anybody still play besides me? and aren't scared about the server merge?

I still think it's the greatest MMO out there in spite of the size of the game.

My first block of time has just expired, and i'm DEFINITELY still interested in the game, but i'm going to wait until after the winter madness to get another card and journey back in.

It's by far the best time i've had with an MMO. Warts n all.

I am still "there" - however, I got discouraged mid-July and really haven't put much time in since then. It has so much potential.

I got kinda tired of it as of about 1.5 - 2 months ago.. once school started.

No longer have time to play and no real desire anymore.

Hit 80 within a month of playing and the guild got up to a T3 city, but the raids are pretty boring now too. We just hit T2 raids as well.

I was playing as a Conqueror on the Cimmeria (RP-PVP) server over the summer, and I had a lot of fun with it at first. Those first 20 levels on Tortage played like a good single-player RPG, but with occasional stages of co-op with friends.

I picked Cimmeria not because I like roleplaying but because people are generally nicer and there are far fewer griefers. I did really like the open PVP system. It made playing a lot more exhilarating than a standard MMO when you could end up in a vicious fight at any moment.

I also really liked the combat. I thought at first that the twitch-based combo system would get old, but I had a lot of fun with it. There was a surprising amount of strategy involved, and I really liked my dual-wielding heavily armored hybrid class. Actually all the classes were really well thought out with multiple roles that made group composition sort of irrelevant, as long as you had a tank and healer.

What finally drove me away was just a little boredom. I hit level 50 and got tired of the grind and the relatively homogeneous zones. Took a break and didn't go back. I'm kind of glad I quit when I did because I really was not looking forward to the high level content, which apparently was competing over mobs in Kheshatta from levels 70 to 80.

So to anyone still playing, what's the game like now? I'd love to get back into it if Funcom is changing things, but the only news I've heard since quitting is that they're merging servers.

It started awesome, broken but awesome. Then every patch after they fucked something else. Censoring, invisible walls, memory leaks, constant lies about when features were being added, the bullshit just killed it for me.

Problem is it's ruined every other MMO for me now.

Cimmeria was really nice - I was ganked just enough to make it interesting but not too much to be annoying (which is what I want from a Pvp server). I do not know what if anything has changed since the new Pvp stuff has been instituted.

It's a shame that this game didn't live up to its potential. I reached level 55 with a PoM and I just couldn't bring myself to keep grinding away. It was strange, I was enjoying myself and then I was just suddenly bored. I'd love to see where the game goes with a new director. I've canceled my sub for now but I'll be back if I hear that there are improvements.

Arrrgh! You're right... That and I'm really enjoying Warhammer.

I won't re-sub but I would like to see the new zone. At least I have til the end of the month. If it's actually already been patched into the game that is.

EDIT: Not out yet but soon. More soon. Always soon with Funcom.

I should probably go ahead and cancel my subscription for now. I haven't played for a few months now. What really killed it for was the level of polish that was done on Tortage. Almost every character to get quests from was voiced, I think there was 1 or 2 that wasn't, everything just felt rather polished for an MMO early in its life. Then I got out of Tortage, the polish went away and my interest in the world waned.

Maybe things have gotten better, but I don't think I really have the time for it right now anyway. Plus Fallout 3 is just weeks away.

Focus on those classes for sure. When you have some time though, I definitely recommend it. If nothing else, the game is incredibly accessible. Even if you don't have a ton of time. You can jump in and start PvPing right from the get go. Heck, you can level up solely on PvP if you want. Don't even need to quest if that isn't your thing. If it is, however, there is a lot of content there too. All soloable. Very good game for a person that doesn't have 3-4 hours at a time to burn.

Few MMOs can have the time-consuming endgame of WoW so soon after release, and I don't really mind that. It's kind of nice to just have fun getting to the highest level then say you win and go do something else.

Besides, PvP will always be fun, even if the sieges are still messed up.

Thread Necro because it's probably not worth it's own thread.

Anyone looking to try out the improvements they say they've made has a chance now. I got an email telling me it's free to come back until 7-22. I've been waiting for a long time for this chance. A new computer and fond memories of what could have been keep trying to pull me back in but I was resolute in desire to wait until I could try it for free. So when I got this email I was ecstatic until i realized I'll be out of town until August. :(

Are 100% true for me too. You expect certain things with an MMO like this, but the two-faced nature of Funcom in regards to a lot of things was really a turn off.

This. The game wasn't much more broken than many other MMOs I have played at launch, but it got worse, they broke more and constantly lied about it. The torrent of bullshit from Funcom was shocking.
Companies that wish to emulate the success of WoW need to look more at the customer service and post launch strategy, rather than just the game itself.

I had a great time for the first two months - even with the lies and general brokenness. But they chose to screw around with group quests/instances serious upping the damage to you if you were too high a level for the boss. (I think they also seriously increased the defense on the group bosses as well) Well, if I wanted to experience an particular area/boss and was almost too high a level, I found myself just standing around looking for auction house bargains while trying to find groups. And of course if you were above the proper level, you couldn't group. My guild was in the midst of imploding and of course the looking for group mechanism never worked and major parts of chat only partially worked. Needless to say after awhile I stopped trying to group and then stopped playing. I wonder if this levelling stuff is still going on.

I actually downloaded the 750 Meg of patches (or whatever), but I could not make myself reactivate an account for just 14 days. They need to be serious and offer people (especially those of us who signed up for more than a month subscription) at least a month like Galaxies does now. If they were really smart they would look for people who seriously underused their subscription and figure out that they might resent AoC and cough up even more.

[BTW, I am referring to just group not raid or "end game" content]

Oh god I hated that scaling damage shit.

If people want to god mode old instances for fun, fucking let them. It's one mentality I will NEVER stand for in a MMO, punishing people for lvling, it's why I quit CoX in the end. People want to explore your game, I would have thought that was a good thing.

A friend at work is making use of this 14 day re-up and he is loving it. He said they have fixed pretty much all of the issues he had and that he hasn't crashed once. The only problem he could think of is that the game jerks a couple of times when you first load an area.

I would think about jumping in on my Tempest of Set, as I enjoyed the gameplay and I really liked playing with our group (even though they jumped server 8-P), but it's so much to d/l and install.

Maybe.

Ok, first report. I really had forgotten how HUGE this game is. I had to uninstall a bunch of games that I'm only sort of playing, or had planned to get back to one day. I only had 22gb of free space, and the game informed me that it required 27gb free. It is also taking a very long time to install, and I'm positive the patching process will take a long time as well. Hopefully I'll get to play it tonight, but I have my doubts.

EDIT: I'm actually quite impressed with the patcher. It took maybe two hours total to patch over two gigs worth of data. I never saw it really dip below 500kbs, and it often maxed out my connection at 1.0+ mbs. This was probably my best experience with getting an MMO patched up to date.

I got a couple of hours playtime with AoC last night, and from what I have seen thus far I am honestly impressed. I saw no hint of lag or stuttering. I really can't say much about how the classes have been balanced and nerfed, but Funcom has certainly worked out the lag bugs.

I had honestly forgotten just how beautiful this game is as well. I was having a ton of fun just wandering around and looking at things, and of course fighting as I did so. I started off on my level 26 Barbarian, but was just too lost to make any headway. I am now playing a Necromancer I had apparently rolled up and forgotten about there on opening beach. I also already have a new guild of really cool people to chat with while I gaze around in awe and brutally murder anything in my way.

All in all, I am having a LOT of fun. I know that Tortage was the highlight of the game before, so I may try out the Barbarian again and see how things are post-Tortage these days.

I would say to anyone interested in seeing how things have changed, take the plunge on the two week free reevaluation trial. I'm actually quite impressed thus far with the work Funcom has seemingly done on the game. It actually runs now, and runs well.

I hope you guys forgive me for this pitiful post, but I just woke up and haven't even had my coffee yet.

I got a bit more playtime in last night, and as I remembered Tortage is a lot of fun. I'm really enjoying my Necromancer character. He is quite powerful, but not overpowered at all as I do die quite often. I've had my first taste of PvP out on White Sands; killed a few and got killed a few times. I'm very impressed with the level progression as well, in the two days I have played quite casually my character has already powered up to level 14. Some may think this is too fast, but it really makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere.

As to the bugs and things that once made me leave, they are all but nonexistant. I have seen maybe two instances where I stuttered a tiny bit, but those were so minor that I almost didn't even notice them. Also, Tortage isn't the ghost town I expected either. It isn't exactly packed to the gills, but it isn't barren by any means. This may be due to the free trial bringing people back, but surely some of them will stick around.

All in all, I have to say that I'm quite impressed with what Funcom has done with the game. I once swore that I would never even consider going back to what was once a terribly broken game, but now I'm seriously considering sticking around for a while. This was the one MMO that I enjoyed enough to stick with more than a month or two, but the bugs and Funcom constantly making things worse with each patch ran me off. Now I will most likely break my vow and stay. I very much enjoy the world and the lore, and also the more adult nature of the gameplay. All grudges against Funcom aside, I am now having a lot of fun with their game. In the end, isn't that what gaming is about?

Squidbot

Downloading as we speak. I'm not sure how my characters will be affected by the server merge, but I think I'll prefer to start from scratch anyway, as my memory of the combat system is vague.
I had a mid level Bear Shaman and a high level....warrior class of some kind? Sword and board type....anyhoo....I wonder what i should try. Barbarian's were fun, I'm tempted to try a caster class though.

I've found my old love for the game again, something about it just clicks with me. And i still giggle abit when i do a fatality with my Dark Templar.

And i just love the classes in the game, some of the are some really cool new takes on the classics. Herald of Xotli the melee mage, Bear shaman the melee healer, Dark templar the tank with a mana shield. and the combat feels fast and responsiv aswell!

I was one of the lucky few that had no compatability issues at release, but the game now runs worse for me than it previously did, which is very annoying. The game doesn't feel any different to me.

I just got it yesterday. I plan on playing the included month and then seeing how I feel about it. I played WoW for about a full year, then played a couple of months each of LotRO, Warhammer Online and Guild Wars. I really don't feel the need to get totally sucked into an MMO, but I do like the openness of the early levels in most MMO's

It appears that I received the standard game with the art book tossed into the shipping box. Odd. The CE art book is pretty nice. I started reading R.E. Howard in 1972, so it's kind of nice to see some of his work fleshed out by someone other than Frazetta.

Acidpoptart
09-15-2009, 05:44 PM
The CE includes an additional, larger art book in box. I know GoGamer includes a smaller art book with the Standard edition as well. Both are pretty sweet.

I actually have been enjoying the game a great deal during the free month. I have been in the middle of a move the last week or so, so I have not had much time to play, but I am enjoying my level 16 Herald of Xotli.
