It was suggested that a beer discussion get its act together, stop couch surfing in The Colonizers, and get its own place.

My current favorite:

Green Flash (http://www.greenflashbrew.com/) makes a number of excellent beers. This is one of them.

I will be the first of us to say it:

I am too poor for good taste! So when I'm out it's a pitcher of Pabst at the local pizza place for 5 bucks, and at home it's Budweiser, Miller High Life, or Milwaukee's Best Ice. I love reading beer threads cause they make me feel like once I'm rich and famous I can be more cultured. I promise to seep up your blurry knowledge. =)

And you may have that luxury...I, alas, do not. Although the beers you chose would go high up on my list of purchases for no reason other than their cool names.

No, but I can't get drunk on water or soda, and sometimes that is what the doctor ordered.

While I strive to only drink outstanding beer, I've found that when someone else is footing the beer bill and/or no beer that I would choose for myself is available that I can enjoy suboptimal beer. Truly wretched beer can also force you to relive all the good beer you've had as a means of repressing the horror.

Ghostbear is, of course, pointing out some gems there.

Well, first, you can never go wrong with Guinness.

My favorite, though, is the Survival "Seven Grain" Stout (http://hopworksbeer.com/survival_stout.php) from Urban Brewery in Portland Oregon. Very rich flavor, with good espresso undertones.

Also, what Mag said about Young's Double Chocolate Stout. That is a delicious concoction.

I recently tried some of Flying Dog's Snake Dog IPA. It wasn't too shabby, and gave me quite a buzzy stepping up to the plate at 7%.

You know, even if you're poor, it's worth it to spend the money on good beer. I'll drink Pabst or Bud or whatever if my friends come over and they bring it, but if I'm buying, it's nothing but the best.

I just can't bring myself to spend even a small amount of money on the cheap stuff.

Beer is probably about $10 for a six pack and $7 for the beer that is on sale. They rarely coincide. I'd rather pay an extra three dollars to enjoy my beer than to buy shitty beer.

Not all the cheap ones are bad. Michelob's Amber Bock is fairly decent, and it's only about six bucks for a six pack.

But yeah. When I have the disposable income, I'd rather have a nice stout or ale. And lately I've been wanting to try out a porter. No access to that in this town, though.

I was actually just trying to get a rise out of some of these beer snobs. I honestly don't really drink, and when I do I can't tell a lick of difference. Not to say nobody can, but certainly not me.

I understand. All beer tastes to same to people that don't have experience. I'd be the same with cigarettes probably (because I don't smoke) or probably caviar. The problem is, people get used to the cheap, watery beer and think that's what beer is supposed to taste like. Hell, I was like that in school before I had any money. Now I can really appreciate a beer that doesn't taste like water. A Bud-only drinker would taste a "real" beer and be disgusted because he has no idea what quality beer tastes like.

I think a lot of things are acquired tastes: beer, cigars, wine, even coffee sometimes. Once you sample enough of a variety you will discern the differences and appreciate them.

If I was going to get easily drunk, I'd drink a cheaper (but not TOO cheap), watery and light beer (because it'll all taste the same before long). But for real enjoyment I'll get the better beers everytime. I'm a huge fan of microbrews because of the better ingredients (and more of them), whereas a lot of mass-produced stuff skimps on ingredients and seem heavy on the water-flavor. Also, because stuff is brewed in smaller batches, you have more flavor.

I think my favorie beers are IPAs and Porters. But Ales are always the default for me. IPAs are great for most occasions, heavy Porters and Stouts for the colder months for me. I usually steer clear of the white ales. I'm not huge on having coriander or other citrus flavors in my beers. But I still can appreciate them and drink them just fine, but not in large quantities.

A big favorite of mine currently, when it's priced accordingly which is hasn't been for this entire summer near me, is Red Hook's Long Hammer IPA. Man, those taste so delicious. Otherwise, I drink more local stuff like Geary's, Tremont (which is a label under Shipyard) and Gritty McDuff's. Gritty's makes a great Black Fly Stout. I bought a mini keg of it once and opened it wrong--thing blew up and sent stout all over my ceiling and kitchen. Place was sticky even weeks later--I couldn't seem to find where it all sprayed to.

I generally reach for a nice Yuengling Lager

It's not the most expensive, and not the cheapest. When fresh it's got a nice crisp taste without a lot of bitterness. I HATE super hoppy/bitttery beers.

I mostly like Amber Boch, Killian's Red, and Sam Adams Boston Lager too. Kinda need something new to drink though, and I've run out of Chimay Red =P

They don't sell Yuengling up here in Maine, not that I've seen anyway, but I drank a lot of it when I was vacationing in South Carolina last year. It was the first time I ever saw a Black and Tan in a bottle. I drank lots of that and the standard lager.

And I think Killian's rots out of a bottle, but out of the tap it usually fantastic.

Also, I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and they had a keg of Budweiser American Ale. It's the beer that Bud is trying to push as their classier drink. It's okay out of the bottle, but out of the keg it was downright addictive. It has a rich, dark reddish-brown color and tastes very full-bodied. I'm happy to see a company like Budweiser actually try to make a good beer like this.

Yuengling FTW! That is my every-day goto beer. It's always good, and definitely a reasonable price. I used to pay $15 for a 12 pack in Florida, but here in Northern Virginia, it's only $9.99! It pays to be closer to Pennsylvania, it would seem.

I've been trying to figure out if there is a way to ship beer. My friend moved out to Seattle, and he can have all the Fat Tire he wants, but he can't have any Yuengling. We want to be able to ship each other beer, but I swear by the rule that once a beer gets warm it will never taste the same again. Also, I don't think it's legal.

When I am drinking large quantities of cheap beer, it's Lone Star (http://www.lonestarbeer.com/)all the way. Official beer of Texas, and actually a good lager- I prefer it over Budweiser, Miller, etc. Also, you can always count on a Texas bar having these, so in a loud, live-music environment you don't have to ask if they have it, etc... just mouth LONE STAR and you get what you wanted :)

This may be true for some beers, but I can always tell a Yuengling that has been allowed to warm up. My friends tested me once and I correctly picked 5 out of 5.

However, I did lose a taste test between Miller Lite and Milwaukee's Best Lite....so I'm not going to claim I'm a beer guru with an amazing palette. I don't officially claim it a loss, because piss beer #1 and piss beer #2 really do taste the same.

Yeah, what Ghostbear said. The majority of beer is shipped warm and stored at room temperature at some point. Hell, all ales are actually created at just under room temp. The only time Yuengling needs to be cold is during its lagering process (oh, and before you drink it). Don't let American beer commercials teach you about beer. Otherwise, next thing you know, you'll be thinking that 3 hop additions in Miller Lite makes it special....

I've taken a recent liking to this, since it is the season and all.

I only got into beer over the past few years. I like a variety of beers but the top 4 are easy picks for me:

Old Growler (http://thebeersnob.wordpress.com/2007/01/10/nethergate-old-growler-porter/)
Pyramid Haywire Hefeweizen (http://www.pyramidbrew.com/our-brews/haywire)
Redhook London Porter (http://www.2beerguys.com/redhook/beers/redhookblackhook.html) at the brewery in Redmond, WA, they serve it from a nitro tap... holy shit!!
Ahhh - Lone Star (http://www.lonestarbeer.com/LoneStar.aspx)

The new Pyramid Haywire was an unexpected surprise. I already enjoy the 'regular' hefe but this one is unfiltered and has a bit of a heavier taste. I for one, enjoy heavier beers and this was a great combo - I can drink this in the summer time.

The missus and I have been enjoying this tonight (not my photo):

Though to my dismay one bottle turned out to be pure vinegar. I almost threw up but luckily I had another beer in my hand within seconds.

I wish Maine didn't have alcohol-by-mail laws. I'd be buying so many brews around the country. :(

Pretty sure all citizen shipping of alcohol is illegal.
That could definitely be problematic. Hell, I could pick Surly Brewing Company and you'd have to come to MN to buy it. :D
Holy unobservant, Chex! I just realised you're in Hopkins. Heh.

I wound up with a mug of this off draft earlier this evening... I was pleasantly surprised. It smells wondrous, and tastes almost as good, until it starts to warm up...

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/5893/negramodelothumb170x170.jpgLOVE Negra Modelo. I latched onto it on one of my many, many business trips to Guadalajara back in 2005, and haven't looked back.

Maybe some of you beer aficionados can help me track down another beer I like. While in Sao Paolo earlier this year, a colleague ordered me a very smooth, very dark beer, but I can't recall the name. I believe when he ordered it the name sounded something like "Black Shot" or "Black Shout". He was talking quickly and in Portuguese, so I didn't catch it. Any thoughts?

I've only ever had it at room temp, and it tasted just fine to me. Then again, I'm the kind of beer snob that only drinks stouts at room temp.

Hey wait, that's me! Also, there are MANY other beers based out of the pacific northwest that I'd love to ship to you. Fat Tire is only one of many delicious choices the western half of the states have to offer. As far as local-ish breweries go, we've got Red Hook, Pyramid, Elysian, Hale's, Mac & Jack's, Deschutes, Rogue...man, I definitely do NOT miss Florida beers.

I think you just can't cross state lines. Or at least not into states with blue laws. I get wine shipped to me every other month.

Oy, what took you to Guadalajara? That's my second city, the place where my family is from and where I've spent a lot of my life.

I never really got in to Negra Modelo, but then again my family was Bohemia through and through. If the old man drank, that was always it.

At least someone knows how to drink a stout. If you drink it a fridge temp, all of the flavor is masked. Optimal temp for most stouts will be in the mid 50s, well above the temp in someone's refrigerator.

You can get a license to ship beer or wine commercially in the US, but liquor is strictly illegal. As for me, I wrap the bottles individually in bubble wrap, then load the box with more bubble wrap so that everything is held fast and doesn't shift. Then I bring it to UPS to ship and don't tell them what I'm shipping. At UPS and FedEx isn't exactly "illegal" but it's against their policy to ship beer and wine without consent. Just don't ship via the post office; that is felony-like illegal.

I was there for one week a month for the last half of 2005 and the first half of 2006 doing training on a new software system implementation. I did the same thing in Sao Paolo, Brazil earlier this year, and this Saturday I head to Antwerp, Belgium. International beer sampling, FTW! :D

I grew up going to Lake Chapala. Back then it was just a big fucking lake. Now it's some sort of American colony, all gross and crass. The last time I was there (2002 or so) my father actually spit on the ground in disgust. It used to be a pretty cool place. :(

It began to get terribly bitter toward the end... I was nursing it over the course of about an hour and a half, though... It came chilled, and was what can only be described as... tepid, toward the end. Not quite room temp, but certainly not chilled.

Well... I had it in a pub, so I'd imagine they served it how it is to be served. Keep in mind that I think 60 is cold, and often go around in a hoodie and scarf during that sort of weather (like the last several, in fact).

Done and done. Iowa is only about a four to five hour drive from me... You're in Chicago? Say about six hours here, meet up in Mpls, wing it down to Iowa... Relatively short trip. Now, having driven cross-country before, and not knowing where Violent is, there might need to be stop offs along the way... I say... about a week's travel time, figuring 12 hour drive days. We could shorten it by driving in shifts while the other sleeps in the back seat.
We'll need a Styrofoam cooler.

Yeah, it depends on the beer too. I've never had a Young's Chocolate Stout, but I can say that Rogue's Chocolate Stout is awesome at any temp.

I don't generally do pubs (more of a dance myself senseless in an entirely too loud nightclub, type) but if I happen across the Rogue's I'll give it a try.

Now for fire-power... Its been a few years since I've gone target practicing, but I used to be decent with a .45, a .9 and a rifle. I am wickedly accurate with a nice Mongolian Recurve with about an 80 pound pull, however. Also hand held pistol crossbows and frozen rollos (which hurt like a son of a bitch and leave really nasty welts).

True fact. About twelve years ago I was out in Pennsylvania at a camping event, and we had these cute little hand held pistol crossbows, and a bag of rollos. The rollos froze overnight, and we didn't think anything of it before loading them into the tracks and firing away merrily. I dented the hood of the car, and my mother caught me in the thigh... I had that bruise for like two weeks, and it hurt like hell the entire time.
I imagine that a well aimed neck shot could trigger that little bundle of nerves that causes cardiac arrest. :D Death by candy.
