This (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=146825) was the last I heard of it.
...episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360 has been delayed from fiscal Q4 2008 to Q1 2009, GamesIndustry.biz reports.
In real terms, that means you can expect to see it pop up on Xbox Live during the three months from November to January inclusive, instead of "autumn" as had previously been touted

I'll have to dig through my Game Developer mags, cause I swear I recently read an article about how the promise of DLC is helping consumers hold onto titles longer. It prevents the play-and-trade mentality that hurts some titles like Assassin's Creed and Devil May Cry. Burnout was another big winner due in large part to the promise of bikes. The promise of bikes and additional content keeps people from swapping it out for something else.

For Burnout, yeah, because they did it regularly. Here we are, though, 6 months after release, and no GTA4 DLC. People are impatient.

From the rumors the DLC COULD be either an entire new island or possibly a new city (doubtful) which would explain why it's taking so long. I know a fair amount of people who are excited about new content for GTA.

Maybe, but what feels so odd about this situation is how hard they pushed this content...and now how quiet they've become.
It's quiet. Too quiet.
I'm excited to see what they do...but I'm getting more skeptical the longer this takes. Here's to, hopefully, being proven wrong ;)

I should have traded this game in as soon as I unlocked all the single player achievements, which was only a month or two after release. I probably would have gotten more for it. DLC released after the massive onslaught of quality games this fall is going to fall on mostly deaf ears I think.

Your advice is to sell the game most people bought for full price and get 20%-30% of that money back, then when the DLC comes out, to buy it again or rent and purchase the DLC?

Exactly why the promise of extensive DLC works to keep people from trading in their games. Who wants to throw that money away? That is not unlike trading in your console between big-budget releases. Sure, you COULD, but you'd lose money each time.
Developers want you to buy their games, and they want you to pay full price. If they design a game that will delay you from trading it in, then there will be fewer used copies on shelves. The fewer the used copies are available, the greater the likelihood that people will buy it new instead. Mission Accomplished
Right now, this is what I know of in terms of upcoming exclusive DLC for cross-platform titles:
PS3:
Mirror's Edge
360:
Fallout 3
Tomb Raider
GTA 4
Any others I am missing?

Game developers need to adapt to consumer trends. I don't think anybody seriously wants to buy a $60 game that takes 5 hours to beat and has nothing left to offer. It's getting to the point where I would say to the developers to not even bother putting together a single player 5 hour campaign, with nothing to encourage a second playthrough, and still expect great sales off an old popular franchise. To me, GTA4 was a downgrade from GTA3.
Edit: I know the GTA4 campaign is longer than 5 hours. Just an example. though the game was the shortest GTA I've ever played.

Interestingly enough, online multiplayer is the other big item that helps reduce trade-ins. If a game has a healthy community of players online, people are less likely to trade it in. That's why single-player affairs like Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed (no multiplayer, no DLC) are so prevalent at game stores. Next time you are near GameStop, duck in and ask the person behind the counter to look up how many copies they have of Assassin's Creed (both systems). It is probably close to 20.

I agree completely. I'm patient too, and love the feel of picking up a bargain. Hell, I consider finding great games at excellent prices a game itself!
Developers still WANT you to pay full price for a game. They also didn't take into account the finances of someone who is raising their own army! ;)

Well, to be more on-topic, I fired up GTA IV last night and the multiplayer scene is still pretty busy.
We have a tendancy to get pretty myopic here on gaming forums. Remember back in '06 when "real gamers" made fun of the folks that were still playing Halo 2 online? That didn't stop it from being the #1 online game on Live until Halo 3 and CoD4 came out.

Very legitimate point. Personally, it's not an issue for me, because I have all but given up multiplayer. It's just not worth it to me; filled with pre-teen and teen-angst, too many people getting pissy about supposed screw-ups and/or the like.
It's akin to swimming in a cesspool to me; sure, I might find something nice floating once in a while, but the stench isn't something I want to deal with. Single-player and private matches only for me.

Looks like the exclusive GTA content is coming prior to January (http://www.videogamer.com/news/31-10-2008-9822.html).
Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an interview to be published next week, McGill revealed that Rockstar has said it will be out in its next quarter, which runs from November to the end of January, but stopped short of revealing the exact date.
When asked for clarification, McGill replied: "Rockstar has said it's in their next quarter, which runs from November to the end of January. It's obviously Rockstar's product so I will refer you to them to find out when they're ready to start talking more about it. I obviously know, I'm very excited. So, yeah. Talk to them."
We tried to squeeze some info out of McGill regarding perhaps the most anticipated DLC of all time, but all we could get was: "What little I know I can't even share with you or your readers. I'm very happy, so that's all I'm going to say. Rockstar are amazing developers, GTA is an amazing franchise. I think they'll do their franchise proud."

I agree. I loved Assassin's Creed. I played through it twice actually and each time I did everything. Well the first time I didn't get the flags but the second time I did. Got 1000/1000 in that game. I also loved GTA4. Played that for 2 or 3 months straight. Got most of the achievements, all but the stupid online ones anyways.
I'm pretty excited about this content. I was looking for another reason to play it again. Though I'm pretty busy with Fallout 3 right now. GTAIV was the biggest waste of money I spent on a game this past year. I played all the way through the single player game and kept waiting for it to become truly enjoyable. They actually made the missions WORSE than previous games due to the way they crippled your ability to approach it your own way. You could often no longer block off paths with cars ahead of time, or find your own way into a building or take your own path. And the stupid "chase" scenes were only over when they decided they were over. It didn't matter how much you shot at the people you were chasing.
The gameplay was actually more glitchy and repetitive than previous games. Most of the missions were incredibly generic and of the "fetch" or "chase" variety. The only memorable mission in the game was the bank heist.
They couldn't get me to buy this extra comment if they promised me a dozen Hot Coffee blowjobs.

Well, given all the absurd hyperbolic reviews that compared it to great literature and film, I think I could be forgiven for having high expectations out of the narrative.
However, I never did expect much out of the story (and it was a good thing too). My real complaint about the game is that it is less of a "sandbox" than even the previous GTA games. It didn't expand the gameplay, it limited it more (see the aformentioned examples). I want a GTA game where I can just walk into a Grocery Store or Bank and hold it up. Or where I can stake out a drug dealer on my own after asking around town and ambush his big deal. The GTA world is basically a glorified Super Mario Bros world map where you have to go to the "hot spots" (i.e. levels) to go to the real missions. The only thing you can really do in the world is drive fast and shoot people and there are no real consequences or effects on the world if you do either of those things.
The only series that I can think of that has evolved less than GTA and demonstrated a larger degree of bankruptcy in terms of new ideas and gameplay concepts is the Halo series.

There are no other console games that have done what Halo has done. I don't care about the PC because I'm not referring to it. On consoles, in terms of features, Halo 3 has put together a package that other titles struggle to accomplish.

I have to agree with those who are sceptical about this new DLC. I'd not be too upset if it was not much more than new missions as long as they were decent, but if it maintains the uninspired nature of the game proper, I'll pass quite happily. There's more than enough for me to play this Christmas.

Angel food cake dressed up is still angel food cake. Yeah, the co-op was well done. Too bad the game you are playing co-op has little in the way of new ideas or even new enemies or environments. The Scarab fights are the only real new addition the game brought.
