I just built a new computer and I am really enjoying it but I am wondering what my CPU operating temps should be? I have a Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz processor. I currently have SpeedFan up and it says:
Temp1: 20C
Temp2: 20C
Temp3: -128C (WTF???)
Core 0: 42C
Core 1: 42C
Now these fluctuate a little which I suspect is normal. How do I setup Speedfan to increase the fan speed when the temperature gets too high? I have done a little experimenting on my own to very little success. Also, I have taken a quick look around and can't seem to find what the operating temps are for my CPU. Thanks in advance!

My Duo, but it's only a 6750, runs between 20 and 30C...pretty normal stuff. As for that -128C reading...is there even a sensor there? Looks like it's not reading a sensor value. I really don't have much experience with speedfan.
The Intel site should have the listing of the operating temps for your CPU, seems to be between 5C and 72.4C (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Duo%20E8500%20EU80570PJ0876M%20(BX80570 E8500%20-%20BXC80570E8500).html). So, it looks like you're average.

Biosc, thanks for finding that info for me. I have never been to CPU World before but it seems like an awesome site. I'll take a look around.
Hopefully I can figure out this speed fan thing out because I want to make sure I get the best performance out of it.

To properly adjust the fans, I suggest changing them in the Bios. But the truth be told, somehow, you either do not have the fans plugged in properly, or your thermostats are broken. 1 and 2 typically are for the CPU and Video Card, respectively. Fan 3 on my board is for the chip set fan, and runs a tad hot.
It is most likely inoccuous. But I am not sure if the safeties will engage if one of these parts overheats. I am talking fire hazard here.
Check your Bios, it will tell you the temps, and let you adjust the fan settings permanently: temps that they engage in, fan speed at thos temps, etc. I really hope that Speed Fan is just lying to you.

What are speeds/rpm? Most 80MM fans go around 2k to 3k max

I have two 120MM fans, one in front one in back, a stock CPU fan on my E8500 and of course a huge GPU van that I can control via software. I'm not so worried about the 120MM fans, they seem to be doing an adequate job. I am more concerned with the CPU fan.

If you're not overclocking the CPU, then the stock fan will be fine. You can get an aftermarket fan (I put in the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro) that will quiet things down, which, considering you have 120MM's, you may be interested in.
