It's hard to believe The Simpsons is launching its 21st season. I know there have been a few lackluster episodes through out but over all it has remains a pretty solid animated series. It has come a long way from its start as a short on the Tracey Ullman Show. I still love it.

Seth McFarlane is just parodying himself, at this point.
EDIT: This episode of The Simpsons is terrible. Is this what is typically expected from this show these days?
I kind of liked The Simpsons episode. Comic Guy made it big. It's not classic "Eat My Shorts" Simpsons but I didn't think it was bad.
The Cleveland Show relied too much on racial jokes. WTF? Is that really where they wanted the show to go? Too many weird voices too.
Family Guy pretty much kicked ass. I loved the Disney dimension. Really good episode.
American Dad was meh. Wasn't bad but wasn't exactly great either.
My score. 1-excellent 2-meh and 1-WTF?

I wish they would've taken a risk with a new sort of animated show rather than giving Seth McFarlane another half hour sitcom, but this is Fox we're talking about. They like playing it safe. I still love Family Guy, American Dad never did anything for me and I doubt I'll watch more than an episode of The Cleveland Show.
It's kind of funny how FOX does play it safe these days. FOX used to take a lot of risk (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=12064), many of which paid off and pretty much made the network. Granted, the image in the link was probably not what FOX had planned but Married With Children is a great example of FOX pushing the envelope.

Family guy was hilarious, Cleveland show was watchable and has potential, Simpsons was quality and fun, American Dad was fine enough but I've never been huge into it.
Anyway, it looks like it's going to be lots of fun.
BTW, fucking family guy...how about getting with the 21st century and going widescreen like everything else. I didn't buy a sweet HD tv to watch your show using only 1/3 of the screen.

And The Cleveland show has a... Bear? An alien in American dad makes sense because the US has been accused of covering up the existence of aliens. Cleveland's wacky companion is a bear? I mean, WTF???
I'm starting to believe South Park's theory of how they write their show. Most likely they had a cork board with random friends for Cleveland, and they accidentally hit a bear picture in a National Geographic laying on a table with the dart. Then said "fuck it" and started writing the show.

I put the bear in the trifecta with Brian and American Dad's fish as an animal friend. I really don't understand the point of that fish. It's so awkward having him stuck in a fishbowl or pushing himself around in a regular bowl. Does he ever do anything besides lust after the wife?

Well I think that was just a way for the South Park crew to take the ol random darts on a cork board joke to it's furthest insanity. I personally think they just post random ideas for a show and toss darts till they get enough words to fill in the blanks. :D

I've always considered the manatee scene kind of a weak insult. Family Guy's quick cutaway gags are like a super-concentrated form of sketch comedy. They take the kind of absurd concept you'd see as a five minute sketch on Saturday Night Live, Kids in the Hall, etc. and distill it down to five seconds, going for a solidly funny line or gag.

From TLF (http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/09/cleveland-desperate-housewives-premiere.html)
Fox placed second in the adult demo and generated nearly across-the-board time-period increases. The Seth MacFarlane-produced titles all gained, but veteran "Simpsons (8.2 million, 4.2) slipped 7% from last year (though was aided by an NFL lead-in last fall). "Cleveland" (9.4 million, 4.9) was up 44% from "King of the Hill" last year. "Family Guy" (10.2 million, 5.2) was also up, climbing 16%. "American Dad" (7.1 million, 3.6) was up 13%.
This is why Seth MacFarlane has 3 shows on back-to-back-to-back.

I just wish he'd take that huge following and do something different with it, other than "Family Guy! Except Peter's a government agent!" or "Family Guy! Except Peter's black!" I still love Family Guy, but Seth, despite all the ridiculous ideas he can come up with for side gags, can't seem to come up with something original for a basic premise. At least Futurama was radically different than The Simpsons.

We can all debate the reasons why we dislike MacFarlane or why our favorite animated series is best but numbers talk. FOX has to go with what brings viewers and right now that is Seth MacFarlane much like it used to be Judge and Groening. MacFarlane is hot right now.

I thought the Simpsons was okay, I watched the Cleveland Show for a few minutes before I decided I would rather go shave (and I hate shaving); Family Guy showed one of its good episodes before it goes back to beating you over the head with the same 3 jokes later in the season. But animation is different. It costs more and takes more time to actually produce it. So advance orders means fox actually believe in the show.

Cost more? Are you sure? I was under the impression that animation was cheaper - although you need a lot of animators, you need less lighting specialists, cameramen, prop guys, etc.
Especially for shows like Seth's where the characters can very little detail.

I know nothing about the way television works, but it seems a tad presumptuous to request a new season when the first wasn't even on TV yet. Either that or they'll just pull the plug on every aspect of it if they change their minds.
I also wonder if Seth ever forgets which one of his nearly identical "goofy family" shows he's working on at any given time and mixes them. ;)

Cost more, as in there's a lot of investment of time. The time it takes to produce half-hour of animated show, you can make a feature length movie(not a good one though. Then there's logistics because all the in-between work is done in Korea. Seth McFarlane keeps it pretty cheap, that's why he has 3 shows. Probably doesn't pay his writers.

It's not normal at all. The thing is, it takes months, or even a full year, from script to screen for an animated show. They can go back and stick in a few topical references later on, but for the majority of the episode you see, it's been in the works for a long time. Renewing the series a year ahead of time makes it much, much easier on the production staff.
The big exception here is South Park, which is made in Flash, often in less than a week. There have been times when it was uploaded to Comedy Central mere hours before airing. You think YOU get nervous when you're close to a deadline... imagine if a couple million people were waiting on it.

I always wondered about that but I'm sure they have some filler episodes in the can. If they can pull off something that's current and happened mere days before they air, they can take a off week and run something like superheros episode.

South Park also has horrible production value. A better example would be Venture Bros., also animated in flash.
Well tonight's episodes were a complete waste. The Cleveland Show as probably the worst 30 minute animated show I have ever witnessed.
