Looks like there may be some bad copies floating around. My disc has all kinds of foggy patches under the clear layer of the disc. Tried it in both of my XBOX360s (launch system and Elite) and it won't boot up in either one.
Called my co-worker who was also picking up his copy this morning and had him crack it open - same thing on the disc, but he's at work and unable to test.
I'm heading back to GameStop to swap it out, and hoping it's not the whole first shipment...
:-(
If you bought Dead Space today and haven't opened it, better check that out even if you're not going to play until this evening. Will try to take a pic of the anomalies when I can.

This isn't the kind of word of mouth about a game you wish to hear. Stuff happens...this isn't the first game to ship with problems...but a game this big...kinda sucks for EA if this is a widespread problem. I've been reading gushing praise on this game, it would be a shame if something like this dampened it's reception.

I have yet to be burned by something like this, let see what happens when I try to find a copy this afternoon.
Sorry to hear about it Tayaya, hopefully you can get a replacement straight away. If there is any good to this at least it happened with a huge EA game rather than some Atlus RPG or something like that.

Is this a situation that boiling the disc will fix? I seem to remember that being a solution for xbox demo discs which were foggy.
I could be wrong though

I was going to say this, although the OP talks about the foggy spots being not on the outside but the inside of the layers of the disc.

It's cool. Got it replaced and opened it in the store - all good now! Looks like it was just these two bum copies so far.

Scared the shit out of me.
I put it in my PS3, and saw "EA Demos."
I was like WHAT THE FUCK?!!!
Then I saw Dead Space right above it.
Phew.
PS3 copy, ok.

Side story: I just bought season 5 of The Wire, factory sealed, and disc 2 had a big circular scratch on it. Had the set replaced with another factory sealed set, and disc 2 had a big circular scratch on it. Went back to the shop, told my sad story, got the "yeah right..." sceptical look from the store cleck, but when he checked another factory sealed copy only to find a scratched disc 2, and then 3 different disc 2s, from display copies, who all were scratched - I finally got store credit (for which I bought BiA:HH).

Just got my copy, looks good but I won't know for sure until this afternoon. Hopefully it was just those two copies.

Maybe you forget, but a little game called Halo 3 also had the same problem with the limited edition (not cat helmet edition) tin boxes. The plastic in the case didnt hold the disk well enough and during shipment it got dislodged. Resulted in a ton of scratched limited editions. Luckily, they played fine even with the surface abrasions.
Major league nightmare for Dead Space though, hopefully the problem isnt widespread.

Personally, if I bought a $60 game from the store and it didn't play right out of the box, it would go RIGHT back to the store before attempting any disc rejuvenation tricks.
Those methods are last ditch attempts for games you've owned for a while that have seen better days, not a brand new game out of the box.

When Halo 3 had issues of discs slipping loose and getting scratched to hell, I actually had the Best Buy worker open it RIGHT THERE to confirm it wasn't bad. The first one she opened was scratched like a cat in heat got at it. The second one was okay.
Bugger. Bugger, bugger, bugger.

My disc has foggy patches under the surface, but I haven't had any trouble with it so far..
I seem to remember seeing that on the odd disc here and there as well, and I've never had any trouble with them as far as I can remember.. I'm still going to get in touch with my retailer tomorrow though and mention it just in case. I'd hate to get 3/4 of the way through the game before it became a problem, since that's likely to take me at least a month or two at the rate I get to play..

My disc looked a little foggy, but I was able to get to Chapter 4 last night. Sounds like a fluke. Glad you got a working copy now!

EA's central processing plant. The line workers were doing body shots off the new secretary when the discs where going across the line being stamped. Music was too loud so they didn't hear the 'Disc Error' warning siren.
It happens.
