The elusive HDD. MS initially went without the HDD in the console to divert costs, as with the first Xbox. Since the Core was introduced, it has constantly been discussed... Why?!

It looks as though a HDD being standard is becoming more and more of a reality with the 360. If you didn't know already, the NXE (New Xbox Experience) will require you to have at least 256mb of memory in order to take advantage of it. What you probably didn't know is that MS is going to allow you to upgrade your memory for free. Ars (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081014-microsoft-undercuts-wii-value-with-20-xbox-360-hdd-promo.html)has the pricing structure and details:

after the September price drop, the least expensive 360 model is selling for $200, $50 less than even the Wii. While the Arcade unit doesn't come with a hard drive, Microsoft is seeking to fix that: the company has launched a promotion giving Arcade users the choice of a free 512MB memory card or a $20 refurbished 20GB hard drive.

That means for $220.00, no one will be without a HDD and it's still cheaper than the Wii.

The article points you to a link on Xbox.com (https://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com/hhanks/en/US/direct/matrix;i=ff6b7a05?cmd=catDisplayStyle&messageType=catDisplayStyle&entryPoint=direct&catKey=600500), that will allow you to do this upgrade. Simply input your console serial number and console ID and you'll get a message NOT similar to mine if you don't have a HDD. Your message will explain how you can get a FREE 512MB MU or a $20.00 20GB HDD. Here is my message:

When/If you do, make sure not to connect a HDD up to it. I have a Core, but because I have a HDD connected to it, the console ID will notifies MS that I have one. So essentially, MS knows exactly how many 360s have HDDs.

I was on PCWorld and saw an article about 360 and Ps3 price comparisons and wondered is this program really that unknown?
