View Full Version : Weekend gaming(9/11/09)- What are YOU playing?

<Cue Ed Sullivan voice over> And now…The Weekend! <screams from fans>. Work, school, hustling, or what you are actively doing for the week, takes a break. What will you do on your break? Perhaps some Batman, find some friends to sing some melodies with The Beatles or perhaps enjoy the ocean view in FFXI? Of course, maybe no gaming (heresy!) instead a road trip to begin watching the changing leaves. Or maybe in the yard raking them. To the hammock I say! Take thy hammock from my cold dead hands…or however the expression goes :). The weekend or bust!
My weekend’s agenda, reading, more reading and some paper writing. I hope to find some escape route from all of that hopefully with these:
Silent Hill: Homecoming- Getting a bit deeper into the typical odd story in a SH plot. The combat still blows.
XIII- Back to the amnesic assassin. If I don’t remember anything, how can I remember how to kill? ;)
Yakuza 2- This just needs to be played. And dammit Sega, where is Y3 here?
Tiger Woods ’10 (PSP)- Playing 1:1 match against Mr. Woods. He kicked my ass. I shall have my revenge Mr. Woods.
What are you playing?

This weekend, if it’s nice and cool like it has been, I might try to do some minor yard work. But for gaming this will probably once more be a PSP weekend, so I’ll be playing:
Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP) – This will be the bulk of my time, I'm sure. Great memories of this title though I’ve forgotten everything over the past 10 years. What I don’t remember is this game being so damn easy. The mobs are felled in one swipe and I don’t even need to use my other 2 characters I have at present. Still, I’m VERY early on, with only 2 dungeons visited. But the overworld map has been too cake. I think things will be changing very soon since I’m about to board a ship out of Kurik.
Syphon Filer: Dark Mirror (PSP) – playing a full-blown action game on the PSP feels…strange. Especially this one with some of the oddest controls I’ve ever experienced. Odd, but really effective. I even changed them back to “classic” mode but realized the default work wonders so I went back. This feels like a console game, not a portable title.
Crush (PSP) – my mind is already melted and I am only on the 4th or 5th level. I had to put the game away out of frustration on Monday because I couldn’t figure out one area. This is one of the most brilliant puzzlers in year and makes you think in the abstract—which is really cool.
Fable 2 (360) – this game bores me to tears most of the time but I don’t want to set it aside again. Might try to plow through the singleplayer game just to finish the thing. I can’t find the “depth” this title is supposed to have.
Lost and Damned (360) – haven’t played too much of this since I got the PSP, maybe I should put in a bit more time.
I’ve been craving something dark, like FEAR 2, which I haven’t started yet, or pop in Dead Space and maybe replay from the beginning, but this time on Normal mode. Hard was more satisfying, but it was also frustrating at some junctures. I can’t even remember what is going on since I last played it during a rental last October, so a restart makes the most sense.

Probably more inFamous and Too Human, but I might fire up something else since I got some more time. Like Valkyria.

It's probably like you said. It's not about finishing it, or completing it. There's no real challenge, it's more of a "being there" game. It's about your dude or dudette. I could run around for hours just looking for treasure, digging up stuff, buying houses, getting a new wardrobe, killing of villagers as sacrifice, it's more roleplaying than most RPG's are.

I was able to make it through on my second attempt at finishing it. The means of communicating with others through emotes, however, really handicapped its potential to be an immersive RPG. Rumor has it Fable 3 is ditching that mechanic and I hope what replaces it is more robust.

The problem is, there isn't much real estate as far as exploring goes, IMO. The areas have narrow paths, and exploring is only allowed where the game tunnels you (if you walk off the beaten path that's exploring, but it's still severely limited).
If the world was wide-open like Oblivion and let you travel freely and discover new places, gop on new adventures, that would be awesome. But it doesn't. The world is far too small and confined. As it is now, when a quest shows up I just click on it to warp to the area and then click on the destination to warp back. No sense traveling since I'll see the same small areas each time.

Yep, that's a great game. Logan's Shadow is even better, even if the story is even more laughable, as hard as that may be to imagine. I love those two games, but holy crap they need to get someone to read the dialog before they put it in the game, it's laugh out loud terrible.
Crush (PSP) – my mind is already melted and I am only on the 4th or 5th level. I had to put the game away out of frustration on Monday because I couldn’t figure out one area. This is one of the most brilliant puzzlers in year and makes you think in the abstract—which is really cool.
Once you get into a groove with it you'll be getting through the levels much quicker. I didn't really hit a wall with it until the end of the 3rd chapter and the beginning of the 4th (there's only 4 chapters). I still need to go back and eventually finish it, but yeah, the game is brilliant.
As for me:
Final Fantasy XI I should be doing CoP 8-2 tonight, and if scheduling can work out, 8-3 and 8-4 on Saturday night. I hope. Otherwise, I really need to take my RDM out, it's been sitting at 62 for way too long.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess If I can get my parents to watch the kids a bit this weekend I hope to power through and beat the game. I don't have too much left to go, I think I'm almost done with the palace in the sky.
Dissidia Final Fantasy I'm working through Squall's storyline now, and next up I think will be Bartz or Terra. Sucha fun game.
That's all I really have planned. If I can finish Zelda I'm going to go back to Dead Space and try to finish that up before Demon's Souls comes out, which shouldn't be too hard. Also, I've got Resistance Retribution on it's way to me in the mail from eBay, so if I get that I may fire it up as a break from Dissidia.
Going to try and get some Valkyria Chronicles going this weekend. I think I left off on the 3rd or 4th chapter. Barely started really. It's a great game but as usual I get distracted every time I go to play it.
I ripped Xenogears to the PSP last night (thanks for the suggestion Gorvi) and will try to get into it. I don't remember ever beating it during the Playstaion days but I didn't remember beating FFIX unitl I popped it in last night. Funny how the memories just flood in once you watch the opening sequence.
I may browse Big Fish Games for another adventure game too. That should cover all of the bases, console, portable and pc.

Gorvi, let me know how Retribution is. I am going to buy Killzone:Liberation after I get through a couple other titles, but Retribution, once it drops in price, will be mine as well. Looks awesome.
And I have a question...with remote play, I can put a PS1 game in my PS3 and play it on my PSP, correct? I am just trying to think of work-arounds so I don't need to rebuy some PS1 games on PSN.

I got it on eBay in like new condition, complete, for $18 shipped. I really liked the demo, and I'm a fan of the series in general, so i'm looking forward to it. As a plus, it's by the Syphon Filter guys, so it should be solid throughout.

Yep, pretty much. There's some lag, so a fighting or racing game isn't a good idea, but turn based RPGs and stuff like that work well.

I'll probably at least play some Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box and some EVE, but I also hope to play some Shadow Complex, as well as some Dead Space. If I get a chance, I'll also check out The Dig and if Gamefly gets it to me anytime soon, I'll be tooling around with Too Human.
More Persona 3 and Devil Survivor. Finally made it past the boss on the 146th floor of Tartarus so I'm hoping to reach block 5 soon. Made it to the 150th floor and then two very unlucky crits wiped out my hero so I just switched it off and went to bed. In Devil Survivor I'm still on Day 3 but I finally made it past the boss battle I'd been stuck on for over a month. That was around 1:30 p.m. in the day, I think, and now I'm on a boss battle at 6 p.m. This one is more manageable, I just need to switch up my tactics/demons and I should be okay. We'll see.
Other than that, I have a game of Arkham Horror on Sunday. Whee.

How is GF working for you lately? I was getting excellent turn around times but now my return time to GF is screwed. I mailed a game out Tuesday and they still have not received it. I used to get the quick return almost every time and even if they missed it they received the game in two days. The last couple of returns have taken 3-4 days. I know you mentioned all mail routing through Little Rock now so maybe that is the problem. It kind of sucks!

Mine has been fine since that one game (the one they decided to send me from Florida for some reason...), so I'm not sure. Did they tell you they shipped you a new game, or is that what you're waiting on? I did notice they have been telling me when the game shipped later, but I'm still getting it in a timely manner (as in, sooner after they said they shipped it, but the same amount of time after I sent my game back).

I might hook up my PS3 this weekend. The BR drive doesn't work, at least it didn't, but I'll see if it works with PS1 games at least. If not I can always look around PSN and buy some crap.
Sucks that I'll need my PS3 on to play the PS1 games. Waste of electricity when I could just rip them to my PSP if they let me.

I'm getting games coming from them just fine. I'm having problems sending games back lately. No more fast return and it is taking 3-4 days minimum when it used to only take a couple. It may be the Conway PO. They are screwy. I got a call from a doctors office one day to confirm my address because the bill they sent me was returned saying that nobody lived at my address. The same address I have lived at for over a year with at least one car parked in the drive at all times. Maybe my mailman is lazy and he is taking deliveries off of his route one house at a time. Soon he will reach his goal of an all day lunch break. :p

With the games that I just picked up for my shiny new PSP, I'm not even sure where to start this weekend...
Valkyria Chronicles: I think I may focus my efforts here. On Chapter 6 trying to cross the open desert. Getting sniped in the process. Need to be sneaky.
Crisis Core: I'm really only a little way into the game but a bunch of missions opened up and I feel compelled to finish all the ones available to me before I advance the story so I've been doing those and leveling up in the process. I have a feeling I'm going to be OP by time I set off back to the story again.
FFXI: I want to get back into the swing of FFXI a bit. Chill with Gorvi and his group a bit, perhaps do some campaign and get my next rank. I've been slacking lately.
Klonoa: I'd like to beat this game this weekend so I can get it off my backlog list and feel like I've accomplished something. Fun little platformer.

I've actually got quite a bit to look forward to. I'm still slowly making my way through Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm just about to enter the Water Temple. I've never played the entire game before and I hear the water temple is a bit of a challenge. I think I'm going to keep an FAQ open just in case.
I haven't played TF2 in AGES so I think I'll play some of that. See if I can get some new hats and equip my halo to show off.
In addition to TF2, I'll probably play a couple of practice rounds of League of Legends to continue to get the hang of it.

The water temple usually breaks people for some reason. Most of my friends who never made it all the way through OOT said they stopped at the Water Temple. I never thought it was THAT bad myself and was able to beat it without a walkthrough my first time.
Man, I love OOT..... Don't make me want to play it again. I have too many other games as it is.

Probably some free D&D Online. If it get to the point where I feel the need to drop some money on it, I'm quitting. It seems a bit cumbersome and laggy. might just be my PC. My flaming kick-ass gaming machine is in mothballs while our house gets destroyed and rebuilt.
Professor Layton and Luke are starting to tax my mental abilities. Most of the puzzles up until now have been fairly easy for my advanced intellect. I'm starting to use hint coins... I'm soooo weak!
Hope to get back into 1701AD. It's been a busy week and I've had few opportunities for long sessions - Which this game is requiring at the moment.
Caesar III is a little easier to attack in short sessions. My conquest of Italy continues.
Get to play in the Mega-Magnet Hyper Ultra Super MRI unit this afternoon. So far all of the research and scans on my knee have been inconclusive. After all of the therapy and steroid shots, it still pops out of joint 20-30 times a day! I'm glad the doctor wants more data before he starts cutting, but Jeez! This has been going on for almost 3 months! The surgeon calls the situation "unique and impressive!" I'll add "Painful as HELL" to that!

Spent today playing a little bit of Infamous. I was getting bored with the game really quickly, but then I spent an hour or so just doing side missions and it got me hooked. I really enjoy clearing more of the map of enemies.
I really need to go back to Persona 4. It's been about a month since I last played it, and if I am not careful I will get into a cycle of loooooong breaks in between playtime just like I did with P3.

I thought the side missions kept it fresher too. I actually avoided doing the main missions until all the side missions were done. There are some that don't show up on the map and the only way to see them is to trip over them. It made combing the islands a bit more enticing. What island are you on? Once you get to the second island, a lot of the powers open up and make the combat more fun.
Not much gaming done on my end yet. I have 4 more holes to go to beat Mr. Woods in our sequel mano a mano match.

Padded? You heretic! ;) I didn't mind the padding..for the most part...but I thought it ended when it needed to. Now go finish...
Due to the zelda fanatics around these parts I received Zelda:TP the gamecube version from gamefly. Fired it up...I admit I missed Zelda...damn wiimote causing me to hate a franchise I loved...then the game reminded me I need a memory card. Damn! I don't have a gamecube memory card around and I don't want to buy a Wii memory card. I bought one off of ebay for $5, but it means putting off playing Zelda for a bit. I thought about playing the Wii version but came to my senses.
Made it into Day 4 of Devil Survivor and wrapped up the first "boss" fight and am now sitting around 11:30 a.m. So yay for that. While it's frustrating at times, this may be one of my favorite DS games. It's just so well done, inventive, a mix that forces you to be strategic rather than go all-out, and the story is really interesting. Great game and I'm looking forward to putting more time in.
Also made it past the bosses on the 146th floor of Tartarus as well as the 160th floor boss. I'm at the top of the 4th block but have no where to go from there, so I'm assuming there's something in the story I need to do to progress more. I'm around October 15th or so with 1 shadow left. So we'll see.
Yay for gaming progress.

Last night my CoP group finally got our shit together and did 8-2. It wasn't too bad, just a rather long run through a dungeon killing pretty much every mob along the way to the boss. I made a good 5k xp along the way, so I'm not complaining. Tonight we should be doing 8-3 and 8-4, so, with any luck, we'll have finally beaten Chains of Promathia. :)
I got some Zelda in too today, I'm a good way into the Twilight Temple or whatever the place is called. I love the way the place looks, and so far, it's been pretty good. I think I'm pretty close to the end of the game now, if I remember right this is the 2nd to last dungeon.

In my quest to wipe out my backlog, I finally beat Dead Space earlier this afternoon. Very enjoyable experience, I'm looking forward to playing through it again.
I recently picked up Final Fantasy IX again...mostly to get me through boring nights in the dorms. I just started the second disc, and I'm sure I'll play some of that this weekend.
I bought Valkyria Chronicles last night for $20 and played through the opening. I really enjoy it so far. I absolutely adore the art style and the combat system has been met with applause from me. I'm really looking forward to getting deep into the game.
I'm thinking I'll pick up either Resistance 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4 to further my quest to eliminate my backlog.
...I'm also heavily considering Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. It's been staring me down every time I enter a store, but I've held out so far. The only games I planned on getting this fall were Scribblenauts and Uncharted 2...I already broke that restriction by getting Valkyria Chronicles, and I'll break it again with the God of War collection...so I'm holding out for now.

Well, on Friday I played some Beatles Rockband, and then put it down because I figured if I playe dit more my wife would shoot me for playing it alone. Side note - Jesus Christ, I don't know like 1/2 of these songs. I am FAIL as a Beatles fan.

I have officially pledged allegiance to new MMO, Fallen Earth. I was skittish at first, but the devs are hitting all the right notes. It's original and fun, the staff are professional, and when the server is announced as going down for 30 minutes, it's down for 30 minutes, no more, no less. So far it's comparatively one of the better MMO launches I've experienced.
Crafting is practically a game unto itself. It's very complex. One individual I chatted with had a crafting character and a combat character - which I assumed fed materials to the crafter. His crafter was one level higher than his fighter, and had never left the bank.
I also have to praise the way mounts are done. They do not cheesily pop in and out of thin air. They are entities in the game world that have to be fueled and repaired, or fed and healed if you have a horse. When you get off, they remain where you leave them. The town I'm in right now has a great old west vibe, with horses waiting on their riders at the side of the street.
Technically it hasn't officially launched yet, but anyone who "preorders" gets "early access." The best part is that the time until the official launch on Sep 22 is free, and then there's another free 30 days after that. Plenty of time to see how things shake out.
Edit:
Just to add one more thing, I see it mentioned a few times in the chat that the game is fun for many of the same reasons old SWG was. I never played it, so I couldn't explain what they mean.

Well, I just got back in from a week away on an island in the bush with the nearest wifi hotspot a good hour away. No internet makes Spiggy something something...
I actually managed to play a good chunk of games this week, mostly in the evening after my charge had crashed for the night and I could spent the night in my room of the cottage with my book, my DS and my PSP.
I made some progress on Professor Layton 2, though I need more tea ingredients and I'm stumped on a puzzle regarding flowerbeds and the spaces inbetween. I did solve that vexing garbage slider puzzle the first day I was up at the lodge though, so that was satisfying.
I also spent an inordinate amount of time playing FF: Dissidia. This is probably the best impulse purchase I've made this year. I had no interest in playing it prior to its release and the only reason it was even on my periphery was because it had the FF name on it. Talk about a find. Firion is a MONSTER once you level him up enough and I've made progress through most of the storylines now. Terra is pretty awesome, but I can totally see how she'd be impossible to play with had I not spent the time learning the ins and outs of the battle system with the other characters first. I still have to work through her story, Zidane's, Bartz's and the Warrior Of Light's, plus the SECOND STORYLINE (dun dun dun)...
Amongst all sorts of other things.
That's about it for what I played all week. Did lots of sightseeing, ate lots of yummy food, almost hit a deer, saw a dead or tranquilized (not sure) black bear on the side of the road and drove far, far too much for a human to drive in one week. I wish I'd booked off more than one day before I go back to work, but I'm a glutton for punishment.
My darling wife picked up Muramasa: The Demon Blade for me so I'm going to try that out tonight after I get the kids to bed.
I'm looking forward to Scribblenauts this week. I'm probably going to preorder Nostalgia for the DS while I'm out as it looks really spiffy. I must resist the urge to get either Beatles: Rock Band or Marvel: UA2, but I think both of those will be rented in the near future rather than bought with real money. I still have Batman to work on (which might get some playtime tonight too) and listening to podcasts this week made me yearn for more time to spend with Little King's Story.
If you're looking for Turning The Spigot this week, it MIGHT happen, but probably not tonight. I'm womped.

I didn't game much at all this weekend. I just played an hour or so of FEAR 2, which is definitely a Monolith game (I'm a pro with their games now, and they use a lot of little features that show up in many of their titles) but ended up putting it down shortly after getting the slow-mo feature.
I have barely played SO2 but will put a couple hours into it tonight. The baby has been absorbing more time than usual this weekend. He's been great as he always is (I lucked out with a good baby I guess) but I just haven't got around to much other than spending time with him. And I also did a lot of unpacking and fixing up of my office. We're ALMOST done moving out of boxes after almost 4 months of living in this new home. We just have the baby's room to clean up (shit everywhere) and we're done I think.
I canceled my free sub to HBO and so I signed up for Netflix, which is actually cheaper. I added over 70 movies (tons of obscure and weird animation and horror--they're selection of everything is fucking amazing) and I still haven't looked at all the genres.
Baby's crying so I gotta go again. I HOPE I can play SO2 tonight...tomorrow we are meeting the babysitter...Kim goes back to work the week after next. Scary that he's that old already.

I got Lost Odyssey because I was craving some old-school RPG action that I could grind in while I watch classic movies, and played through some Dawn of War. I like not having to micro manage resource building.

Can I ask a question without starting a new thread? The living room 360 isn't connected to the internet (fuck Microsoft for not including wi-fi and fuck them for their stupid $100 peripheral to get wireless). I don't have an ethernet cable that stretches that far. My modem/router is in my office on the other side of the house. I don't want to drill a hole in my hardwood floor in the office to string through the basement and up back again into the living room.
I tried connecting an ethernet cable to my laptop (which is wi-fi) and plugging it into the back of the 360 and it seemed to work--it started downloading an update. But then it said it couldn't install the update because of no internet connection after the 360 restarted. And I haven't been able to get it to connect since then.
Is there a wireless product I can buy that I can plug into the wall on my living room's entertainment center and then run an ethernet cable from it to my 360? And are they expensive? I know I'm looking for a wi-fi access point or something, but I don't know what the heck I'd need.

I believe you need a Wireless Access Point, like this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320025), but I'm not entirely sure. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge than myself can weigh in.
As for me, I didn't get any gaming in this weekend. :(
I worked yesterday from 6am to 2:30pm, then biked home from downtown Minneapolis to Saint Paul. I met a friend near the Mississippi River, and we biked over to Bravo for Chinese food and pastries. Then we stopped by Target where I nearly bought Patapon 2. After that we had a beer and dinner at the Muddy Pig. Following that I went home and spent the rest of the evening doing nothing in particular.
Today was all about biking and playing Scrabble with friends. No time for gaming all weekend! I was going to play for a while tonight, but I'm beat.

Holy moley, Muramasa: The Demon Blade is probably the prettiest game I've ever played, EVER. It even beats out Okami. It's pretty fun too, though it's so Japanese it hurts.

Thanks! Hopefully this week, going to have to get with Akuka and Rambotaru, Rambo at the very least wants a perma static for missions and stuff like Nyzul, I'd be all for that. :)
