360/PS3 Releases to End of 2008 Discussion

http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1195This piece will hopefully generate some discussion and not devolve into a console war. Presented here are the PS3 exclusive, 360 exclusive and major multi-platform games for the rest of the year. I decided not to include the Wii or PC since some of the games are coming out for the latter and honestly there is no major Wii game outside of Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Life in my mind, if I’m wrong please let me know. The key questions I would like to ask are:

1. Objectively, with no console bias, which side do you think has the better exclusive releases?

2. Which games are you thinking of purchasing in the below list?

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?

4. If you don't own one or both systems, would you buy one now with the games that are coming out? If so, what game tipped the scale for you?You could also add any additional questions if you’d like the discussion to expand further. I originally had the box shots for all the games below, but I went well over the limit of allowed images in a post. If you are interested in buying any of these games, please check out the Amazon Referral thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=667) where your purchase via the links will help the CoG Network. Thank you. First up is the PS3 Exclusive games through the end of the year.

PS3 Exclusives

SOCOM: Confrontation (Oct. 14): This series used to be quite popular, but now it seems like this game has released with little to no hype behind it. What the heck is up with that? Maybe it has to do with Zipper not being the company behind it. The game is sold cheaply for $39.99 and with a Bluetooth headset it goes up to $59.99. This game, much like Warhawk, is online only and supports up to 32 players online at one time.

LittleBigPlanet (Oct. 21): Probably the most interesting exclusive release on the PS3 this year. With only online level creation multiplayer being put on hold until after the release sometime, this could be a huge community game. I was once worried about the amount of levels that would ship with this game from a single and multiplayer viewpoint, but it is sounding like there will be a lot of levels.

BioShock (Oct. 21): Yes, we can argue about exclusivity here, but the fact is the 360 and PC versions have been out for over a year and the PS3 finally gets its turn at the plate with the game. Recent word is that in the demo the graphics don’t look as good as on the 360, but we shall wait for the final game to find out for sure.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (Oct. 28): The sequel to the relatively well received off-road game. This time around you are dropped on an island in the Pacific Ocean. They are claiming no 2 races will be the same and there is 4-player split-screen play as well as supposedly re-tooled online play.

Resistance 2 (Nov. 4): Honestly neck and neck with LittleBigPlanet as the biggest release for the PS3 during this time. The big draw here is the 8-player online co-op story that is separate from the single player story. The other draw is the 60 player online multiplayer which will be interesting to see if it works via network latency and all that good stuff.

Xbox 360 Exclusives

Fable II (Oct. 21): Honestly this game is still a huge unknown. The first game was good, although many were turned off by the fact that many of the promises Molyneaux presented did not present themselves in the final game. This game shows a lot of promise, but there are plenty of people out there that have been burned by Molyneaux before and may not try another of the games he creates. Online co-op play should be patched on the first day of release, so that will be interesting to see as well.

Gears of War 2 (Nov. 7): Probably the biggest release saleswise on any system for the rest of the year. The last game sold about 5 million copies worldwide and one can only guess this game will meet or exceed that number. Bigger, badder and better has been the mantra for this game ever since it was announced. The campaign is supposedly longer and a 2-player co-op option is now present. Add in a 5-player co-op Horde mode where you face off against increasing waves of enemies and this game is sounding like a multiplayer tour-de-force. Head-to-head with Resistance 2…who will win?

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 (Nov. 11): This game is supposedly coming out on the 360 before the end of the year. The previous games ported to 360 have been done rather well from a control standpoint, although nothing still beats the mouse/keyboard combo honestly. This game will also supposedly support online co-op play through the campaign contained in it.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Nov. 11): A cheaply priced game ($39.99), but we’re still not sure what kind of game it is. We’ve seen the building of different vehicles and collecting of different parts. We’ve also heard about platforming elements, but honestly what is the percentage of the game taken up by each side? The game does look nice and should be a nice pickup if you have children in the house as well.

Left 4 Dead (Nov. 20): A highly anticipated game here at CoG and one that many will probably pick up on PC versus the 360. It is sounding like pre-sales for this game are through the roof and should prove to companies out there that a well made zombie survival game can do well in this world.

Major Games Coming to Both

Dead Space (Oct. 14): Reviews so far have been very good even though there are still people out there that are not sure about this new IP from Electronic Arts. We should have our review soon, but you can check out impressions from both James (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=999) and Nick (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showpost.php?p=26772&postcount=74) on their time with the game so far.

Saints Row 2 (Oct. 14): This delayed game finally comes out and so far reviews have been good, but general reaction seems to be mixed. Drop-in/drop-out co-op play is probably the biggest draw here along with the obvious continuation of the life and times of people in Saints Row.

Rock Band 2 (Oct. 19): Yes, the standalone 360 version is already out, but on this day the full package comes out for the 360 and the standalone and package for the PS3 comes out.

FarCry 2 (Oct. 21): You can read Andrew’s (Trackzero) thoughts on the multiplayer parts of this game right here (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=298). This is certainly one of those possible sleeper games with Ubisoft Montreal on the job this time around after Crytek broke off and made the Crysis games. You are dropped into a large portion of Africa with one goal: to get the Jackal. The multiplayer options sound excellent as well.

Midnight Club Los Angeles (Oct. 21): If this were any other time in gaming this would probably be a bigger release than it will end up. This is the first time for the series on the newer generation of consoles and it does get to face off with the new Need for Speed game in less than a month.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (Oct. 21): This game also is hurt by when it is coming out more than likely. James recently gave his impressions (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1029) of his time with the game here on CoG. Could this be a really good Spider-Man game or is it going to fall by the wayside like the last one?

Guitar Hero: World Tour (Oct. 26): The game comes out for basically every console known to man. This is Activision’s answer to the Rock Band phenomenon and should be interesting to see if it can do what Harmonix does better. One thing it does have is the recording studio that may be just enough to make it stand out against the competition.

Fallout 3 (Oct. 28): What was once a PC game now also comes out for the 360 and PS3 with the option of a first or third person view while playing. This of course is blasphemy to many of the previous two game’s fans. Will there be enough people to have an open mind and try this game? This could be another sleeper game, a huge hit or a huge flop.

James Bond: Quantum of Solace (Nov. 4): Another game that James gave us his impressions (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1029) of from his recent trip. Built on the Call of Duty 4 engine, this should be interesting to see how a third person perspective will work out in this engine. The game will combine parts of Casino Royale with parts from the new movie since there was no game tied into the last one.

Call of Duty: World at War (Nov. 11): The final game James gave his impressions (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1029) of from his trip. Even though it is developed by Treyarch, James feels that they have righted any wrongs they once had. We shall see if he is indeed right, but most of the reaction out there is positive so far.

Mirror’s Edge (Nov. 11): The game that garnered a lot of Best of E3 awards finally comes out. Honestly the hype seems to have died down quite a bit on this game even though they recently announced this game would be part of “at least a trilogy” (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1127). The parkour gameplay still looks cool, but there are a lot of games coming out during this time and this may take a backseat to many of them.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Nov. 16): Midway is pretty much putting all the rest of its marbles toward this game. Recently having borrowed $40 million from its parent company in order to release this fall’s slate of games, the onus is specifically on this game to perform well. If they can catch the magic the series once had long ago it could be a big sleeper game this winter, but there is a lot of competition out there for gamer’s dollars in this economy.

Need for Speed Undercover (Nov. 18): EA Black Box drops the ill-conceived ProStreet model and goes back to what made the games better recently: open world racing and a more Most Wanted type of feel. That can only be a whole lot of win honestly after the last release and with Maggie Q and a Cops and Robbers online game mode it seems like they have learned their mistakes and are going back to the bread and butter.

Sonic Unleashed (Nov. 18): Can Sonic Team, minus Yuji Naka, capture lightning once again or is this going in the trash bin with most of the console release of this series recently? The idea of there being a Werehog change for Sonic is enough to scare the crap out of anyone that they’re trying to pull a gimmick out of a hat instead of concentrating on what made the games great so long ago.

Tomb Raider Underworld (Nov. 18): Crystal Dynamics did well on the last game and things are looking up for this go-around. Best thing Eidos ever did was wrest control of the series from CORE and drop it on Crystal Dynamics.

Prince of Persia (Dec. 2): The last big release of the year comes from Ubisoft Montreal in the form of a new PoP game. Going back to square one and forgetting things like Warrior Within ever happened is probably a good idea. This time around they tap the gameplay of games like ICO with cooperative gaming with an NPC companion that you can play off of. The only bad thing is that there isn’t actual co-op gameplay, because that would be awesome! This game looks really good as well and should be a good bookend for the year.

1. Objectively, with no console bias, which side do you think has the better exclusive releases?
Xbox has some major hype going on with Gears and Fable part II while the PS3 has little big planet and Resistence II. Really the question is how much will LBP drive sales? If LBP has the kind of reviews it's supposed to get and sells as well as it's supposed to...then sir, you have a pretty good tie here. If LBP does okay, then the edge goes to the 360.

2. Which games are you thinking of purchasing in the below list?
Rock band 2 Guitar Hero 4. Everything else will be rented/bought used.

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?
No, there are a couple good games this year but the struggling economy will see a decline in the sale of entertainment in general.

4. If you don't own one or both systems, would you buy one now with the games that are coming out? If so, what game tipped the scale for you?
Nope. I had a 360 and the piece of garbage broke and then MS customer service treated me like garbage until I contacted the BBB. MS isn't getting my money for another console even if it means I get out of gaming completely.

Given that three of the Xbox 360 releases are sequels, there is no doubt that it will have stronger sales figures. Gears of War 2 alone is going to be a winner, with a remote possibility of topping the Halo 3 release. Personally, the Xbox 360 has more potential purchases than the PlayStation 3 which I do not even own. And no, so far nothing has convinced me that I need yet another console.

So far, the only game I am planning to buy this season is the Rock Band 2 bundle. FarCry 2 is a potential purchase, though. I definitely hope that both Fallout 3 and Fable 2 are worthy games as I might look into them later on. With Warhammer Online and, more importantly, the purchase of a new PC, I will not have enough time or money to go crazy this season.

Whether or not this holiday season can compare to the previous one remains to be seen, but the list of new releases looks promising. There may be some similarities between 2008-2009 and 2007-2008, especially if Dead Space comes anywhere close to BioShock's success (the two titles have several notable similarities).

EDIT: Far-bloody-Cry 2. TrackZero's article convinced me to buy the game unless something major happens.

I'd say the X360 probably has the edge for the holiday. Not that I think any of the PS3 games will be bad, in fact they should all perform very well, but I see shooter, shooter, big time shooter, racer, LittleBigPlanet. The X360 has a more diverse list of exclusives, with what will probably be the best selling game this year, however there are still some unkowns on the list. Add to that, that multiplatform games usually sell better on the X360, and that's the holiday.

I plan on getting Dead Space, Fallout 3, Fable II, Gears of War 2, and Banjo-Kazooie, which will deplete my gaming money for months. But if I had even a little more money, LittleBigPlanet would absolutely push me into buying the PS3. I may even find it before the end of the year.

The best game on the exclusives list, by far I think is Little Big Planet.

But I'm sticking with my earlier prediction that sales-wise it's going to be less than stellar.

Frankly, other than that the exclusives are kinda meh compared to the cross-platform titles.

I own both consoles but I think the 360 has the better exclusives for this holiday season. LBP could be a huge game for Sony (and I'm purchasing it day one) but I think the 360 has the few extra games like Left4Dead and Banjo which put it over the top.

I'd going to purchase: LBP, Gears2, Fable2, and Fallout 3 (for the 360 because of the DLC). If I'm not completely broke after that then Resistance 2 and Prince of Persia.

I think this year tops last year in terms of quality and quantity but I doubt it will top last year in sales due to the downturn in the economy.

I own both systems already. If I didn't then it would be a tough call. Sometimes it's not necessarily the games that can push a person to one console or another but rather the consoles owned by their friends.

I can't say I'm very interested in any of the 360 exclusives outside of possibly Fable 2, but that would have to be a big improvement over the original. It has potential, though.

Fox, you're missing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 side, that comes out November 11th and is one of the games I know I'm very much looking forward to.

I think Sacred 2 also belongs in the multiplatform releases section, that's set to come out in mid-November.

As of right now I'm buying LBP, Resistance 2, and Valkyria Chronicles. There would be more if I had the time and money for them, but that's just realistically not going to happen.

Sacred 2 is off my list as of now. That game is getting some horrendous feedback from early buyers in europe. It has a host of issues. It's too bad because I thought the first game was a flawed gem and I was looking forward to seeing what they could do with a bigger budget.

There's two 360 exclusive games coming up that I'm looking forward to. Fable II and Gears 2 are must-buys for me. Left 4 Dead is a PC title to me regardless of it being available on the console. TF2 on 360 has taught me a harsh lesson about Valve.

Multiplatform looks like the real winner this holiday season. There are a ton of multiplatform games coming. It's going to kill my wallet.

Shit. What kind of issues? I was kinda looking forward to that game for some co-op Diablo style fun.

1) Xbox 360, seeing as it has 2 games I care about, as opposed to none.
2) Fable II, Last Remnant, Rock Band 2. I'm getin Fallout 3 and Dead Space for the PC.
3) Doubtful. Might equal it, though.
4) If I didn't own a 360 already, I would have picked one up earlier this year. Nothing for PS3 I care about yet.

Edit: If you include Valkyria Chronicles, the PS3 jumps to a big ONE game I care about. Not enough for me to spend $500 (400 plus tax plus extra gear to hook it to my TV) on.

As Gorvi mentioned, Valkyria Chronicles is probably a big enough game to make that PS3 exclusive list. It would at least put the exclusive lists at six and six.

1. Hard to say. Some of these games I know will be big sellers, but aren't of much interest to me. I'd say they're more or less on level footing (unless we were talking about the Japanese market).

2. I will be getting Valkyria Chronicles. I'll most likely be getting Last Remnant. I may get LittleBigPlanet, though I may wait on it (looks fun, but I'd like to see more of it before laying down the cash, maybe wait for CoG review/user reviews). I might get Fable II, but will probably end up waiting (I'd like to play it, but I have a hard time getting excited about it right now). There's a few others that I'm a little bit interested in (Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Midnight Club: LA), but I'm fairly certain I won't be buying this year.

I split the difference and made it 5 and 5. I took out Last Remnant. Although both this and Valkyrie Chronicles are important JRPGs, they just aren't necessarily "major" games in the large scheme of things.

You can certainly continue talking about them though, I have no problem with that. Other people have other ideas about what is major :D

Shit. What kind of issues? I was kinda looking forward to that game for some co-op Diablo style fun.

Keeping in mind that this is for the european PC version, there are tons of issues with optimization and multiplayer. You can check their official forums (http://forum.sacredeng.ascaron-net.com/forumdisplay.php?f=207), but it's also in unofficial discussions as well. The game just plain runs like shit at this point for most users. Multiplayer is apparently inoperative.

Add to that mess that the voicework and translation is unusually bad even by import game standards.

I know the console version is supposed to come later, but unless something drastically changes between now and then, it doesn't look good.

Edit: Here's a typical early 'first impressions' forum post from a game reviewer.

Just got Sacred 2 in for review, and I'm a bit flabbergasted by the acutely shit technical implementation of the game. It wheezes and stutters on a 9800 with 1024MBs of RAM, even when running in fairly low resolutions. The game does the same stuttering and framedropping on a different computer, meaning it's not just my hardware configuration acting up.

I'm downloading the hefty first-week patch now, and I hope that this will make the game more playable, but as far as first impressions go, I'm not particularly impressed. Even the intro stutters and loses its audio on a fairly new and highly specced computer.

That's unfortunate. You'd hope that for the console release they'd be putting it out bug free, but then if it's actually coming out next month, that's not a whole lot of time to clean things up. Bleh.

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?

I do not know if any year can top last year for me personally. After being exposed to console gaming classics like Chrono Trigger, then buying a 360 at the end of the summer and being overwhelmed with the Orange Box, Mass Effect, Bioshock and Halo 3, my first year of gaming was apparently one of the best for many people, making it possibly untoppable for me. Last year was one of the best years to be introduced the console gaming, though with that kind of introduction I worry about being disappointed in the future.

1: For me, the 360 has a better set of exclusives. SOCOM is really only big for the SOCOM players. Boishock, while a great game, will just be a rent for many. Motorstorm would have to be much more improved than I think it is to really get people to purchase it over the one they already have. Racers tend to not be great sellers. Resistance is the best shooter for the PS3 and will sell well. C&C:RA3 will do well for an RTS as there is allot of nostalgia with it. Banjo will be a family purchase for me at some point thanks to the split screen. Left 4 Dead will eather be a huge hit or not sell as well as those that love it think it should have. What is with the hype for this game? It doesn’t look to me like much more than lots of things to shoot with friends. Not that that is a bad thing but would there be as much expectation for the game if it was aliens or robots instead of zombies? But I haven’t played it yet so we’ll see.

2: Fable 2. The dreams of the first game come true as all the features talked about are actually in the game. The couch co-op alone gets this game to a purchase. Add the simple yet deep combat options and it will work well for me and my non gamer wife. My only real fear is that the game will be too easy for the hardcore gamers.

Gears of War 2. The game play of Gears tweaked to perfection; more maps, more weapons, more co-op and better graphic all equal must have for me. The chance that this time there is a real story is cherry.

3: If I had the money I did last year it would be bigger.

4: If I had the money LBP would be the system seller for me. It is the only game that I have seen on the PS3 that really makes me want that system for anything more than a BR player. However, if I had the money for that I still have more things I would probably spend that money on for the 360. I have a hard time justifying a system for one game. Once I get a new HDTV then I’ll have a reason for a BR play…er…PS3.

As for the 3rd party games? Fallout 3 is the one that kind of screams at me for some deeper RPG play that what Fable II may bring. Guitar Hero:WT is one that I would like but I do not want to spend the money for that kit. CoD: WaW would be a nice break from Gears too.

1. I think that they will be evenly matched this year. Sure 360 has Gears 2 and Fable 2 but LBP is looking to be 'the game to have'.

2. Socom Confrontation is a definite. And Left 4 Dead... still undecided on pc or 360 (same with RA3)

3. Its tough to say if this year will beat out last year. This year is 'the year of sequels'. Time will tell... check back in awhile.

4. Achievements and live play tip the scale for me. Most of my game rentals this coming year will be on 360 as I have it in the basement setup. PS3 I use mainly for blu-ray and its upstairs where my wife watches tv and I haven't asked her to leave or give me the remote so I can play PS3. I hope to play some of the ps3 titles coming but it won't be as frequently used as the 360 titles.

1. Objectively, with no console bias, which side do you think has the better exclusive releases?

I'd have to say the 360. I havent been into a SOCOM game since the first one way back in the day, and LBP doesnt really tickle my fancy. Resistance 2 sounds good, but I'd much rather play Fable 2 or GoW2 than any of the PS3 releases.

2. Which games are you thinking of purchasing in the below list?

I'm going to purchase either Fable 2 or Fallout 3 before Christmas, then put a bunch on the Christmas list (GoW2, Guitar Hero, CoD4, and Dead Space if it gets good reviews). Wallet is thin this year.

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?

Tough call, I'd say maybe and leave it at that.

4. If you don't own one or both systems, would you buy one now with the games that are coming out? If so, what game tipped the scale for you?

I own a 360 (obviously), but wouldn't buy a PS3 for the games coming out. To be honest, I think I might skip out on this generation of Sony consoles completely.

1. Nobody can be objective, but IMHO the X360 has the stronger titles

2. Gears of War 2, Fable II, Left 4 Dead, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space, FarCry 2, Fallout 3, James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Call of Duty: World at War, Mirror’s Edge, Tomb Raider Underworld, Prince of Persia

3. In quantity: yes. In quality: no, Mass Effect was released in -07

I disagree. I personally own all the systems and really have no bias towards one in particular. The wish to keep objective is more for those that may be hard on one fence, but may see the other side does have a good lineup and may pick them.

I like to see myself as being objective, but I dislike the PS3 controller and its online interface so I'm probably not. I love some of the games and its media capabilities though.

I'd have to say that the 360 has the better line-up of exclusives in my opinion. A big reason for that is that I can't consider BioShock an exclusive. It was a great game last year, and it's great that the PS3 gets a port, but I don't count it in my evaluation.

For me, LBP is the only PS3 exclusive that I have any interest in, whereas on the 360 I'm interested in Fable 2 and GoW 2. For anyone else, I think it depends on what you're interested in. A shooter fan may well find the PS3 having a stronger lineup with Resistance and Socom, plus Bioshock being available. I also think LBP looks like a much better family platforming game than Banjo. Luckily, I think everyone will have something good regardless of platform, but based on my personal preference, I like the 360 line-up better.

The games I plan to purchase from the list are Rock Band 2 (already bought with the $300 drum kit even), Fable 2, and Fallout 3. However I'll probably pick up at least one or two more of the following, plus adding them to my Christmas wishlist: Dead Space, Gears 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Prince of Persia, Mirror's Edge and Tomb Raider.

Just based on that list, this year's lineup seems like it may top last year's. There are more games I'm interested in this year than I was last year. We'll have to wait to play them before making any final judgments as some of the games from last year were instant classics (Portal and BioShock), with many others being simply great games. Right now it looks like this year might be better, but any one of those big games could end up being a huge disappointment, or simply not live up to expectations (anyone guessing Fable 2 here?).

LBP is the one game for the PS3 that really makes me wish I had one. However, there's so much more available for the 360 or multi-platform that until they drop in price or get a few more big time exclusives, it's hard for me to justify the purchase.

Overall I think this year will be great for gamers, regardless of which console you own (other than Wii-only owners, but they're not really gamers =P). The diversity of games coming out this year I think surpasses that of last year, which is what really puts this year above last in my opinion.

1. Objectively, with no console bias, which side do you think has the better exclusive releases?
It's kind of hard to not have bias, here.
Personally, I like the PS3's exclusives more.
But, I believe the 360's will by far outsell them.
In any case, it's going to be a great last few months.

2. Which games are you thinking of purchasing in the below list?
Oy.
LittleBigPlanet
Gears 2
Left 4 Dead
Dead Space (got it today!)
Fallout 3 (PS3)
and, if I have time, Prince of Persia

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?
I believe so, I didn't buy one game at all last Q4.
I've bought two in the past week.

Thing about Question #1 is that nowhere does it talk about which ones will sell more, but which lineup is better in your opinion.

I can honestly say that the majority of my coin is being spent on the 360 this year, but both systems are really running neck and neck for software.

Microsoft and Sony both get:

Call of Duty: World at War
Farcry 2
Fallout 3
Prince of Persia
Saint's Row 2
Dead Space
Guitar Hero World Tour
Rock Band 2

That's a pretty damn impressive list of great (or at the very least solid) titles for either platform. I'm pretty much split on which consoles i'm buying my multi-platform titles on, Fallout 3 and Call Of Duty: W@W are gonna be 360 purchases (though i may lean to PS3 for Fallout 3 because of the sheer amount of time i plan to sink into it.), Dead Space and Prince of Persia will be PS3, as i prefer the PS3's controller for pretty much everything but FPS's, and i find the surround sound to be better separated than my 360. In terms of technology, the cross-platform blues seem to be all but over for Sony, as most multiplatform titles have been more or less identical for the last few months.

When you get into exclusives, i really only see four games that matter, and they pretty much equal an even race. Microsoft has Fable 2, countered by Little Big Planet, which has probably eclipsed Fable 2 on the hype-o-meter. Sony has Resistance 2, but Microsoft has the 800-pound gorilla that is Gears of War 2. I see it as a wash in terms of software quality.

Now talking sales, Microsoft's install base is definitely going to help them out this year. My predictions:

The big winners:
- Gears of War 2
- Call of Duty: world at War
- Resistance 2

The "surprise" hits:
- Little Big Planet
- Dead Space

The "about what we expected" 1 million club:
- Fable 2
- Fallout 3

The "Wow, i can't believe no one played this!" Club:
- Prince of Persia
- Farcry 2
poor, poor Ubisoft.

Of course i'm no swami... or am i?

1. Objectively, with no console bias, which side do you think has the better exclusive releases?
Honestly, I think it's the 360. While the PS3 has LBP and Resistance 2 (I'm not considering Bioshock in this), both of which I'm very excited about, I think the 360 tips the scale with Gears 2, Fable II, and Left 4 Dead. I think there's just so much excitement about these three games that it outweighs the PS3's lineup.

2. Which games are you thinking of purchasing in the below list?
Gears 2, LBP, Left 4 Dead, Resistance 2, Dead Space, Call of Duty: World at War, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. (Goddamn, that's a lot of money. :()

3. Do you think this year may top last year (which many thought was a banner year) in quality and quantity overall?
Yes. Last year was fantastic, but this year seems to be equally as great, if not better.

4. If you don't own one or both systems, would you buy one now with the games that are coming out? If so, what game tipped the scale for you?
I own both systems, but it seems like LBP is the scale-tipper for most people thinking about purchasing a PS3. For the 360, if anyone doesn't have one, I think it'd be Left 4 Dead.

By the way, this was a great idea, AgtFox! It's a good way to organize all the titles for everyone and start an interesting discussion.

I'm looking forward to the following on Wii this fall. They may not be 'major hardcore releases' in people's minds, but each and every one of them will get a try in the Wii before the year is out.

Monster Lab (http://ds.ign.com/articles/906/906757p1.html)
Mushroom Men (http://wii.ign.com/objects/884/884634.html)
Tales of Symphonia 2 (http://wii.ign.com/articles/909/909872p1.html)
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Shaun White (for the balance board)
Skate It (for the balance board)
Castlevania Judgment
Deadly Creatures
Rayman Raving Rabbids 3
Plus, there may be other cross-platform titles that I actually pick up on Wii because of enhanced controls.

On the PS3 front, I'll be getting Little Big Planet. the rest of the PS3 lineup are sequels (or ports) that didn't woo me over the first time. They hold very little appeal AGAIN.

The 360 has some SOLID titles in there including Gears 2 and Fable 2, which will sell like hotcakes. But Left 4 Dead and Banjo are ones I want to play even more because there is little else like them.

Truth be told, I'll probably be spending most of my time with the DS though as it goes everywhere with me now, and its list of exclusives are freaking KILLER!

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Jagged Alliance!!! (http://ds.ign.com/objects/142/14271801.html)
Robocalypse
KORG DS-10 Synthesizer (http://ds.ign.com/objects/142/14240683.html)
Populous DS
Metal Slug 7
Moon
Age of Empires: Mythologies
Chrono Trigger DS

Last year was fantastic though. Between Rock Band and Mass Effect... I can't imagine anything better.

I would say that PS3 has a weaker lineup this year out of the two. Resitance 2 and LittleBig Planet look awesome, but as far as exclusives go, that's it. Almost all of Microsoft's first-party exclusives are going to get bought by me eventually and plus they have exclusive DLC on some major titles.

I only own a 360 and I will still defend that it's the best system so far this generation (well, software wise). PS3 has a lot of untapped potential and the Wii is, quite frankly, a piece of shit (I sold mine).

Games I'm getting this fall:

Gears 2 and Rock Band 2 (already got this) (and possibly Guitar Hero)

Games I plan on getting next year or renting:

Dead Space, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty:World at War, Fable II, Banjo-Kazooie:Nuts and Bolts, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise, Silent Hill:Homecoming, Left 4 Dead, and Far Cry 2.

Games that are wait and see: Sonic Unleashed and Fallout 3

Edit: Also wait and see: Shaun White Snowboarding, Mortal Kombat Vs. DC

I like this year's release list more than last year. Mostly because last year wasn't very diverse and a lot of games disappointed me.

I don't think I count.

Most of that list I am getting on my Magic PC

LBP is, from my perspective the best game coming to consoles this year. It is original, highly polished, and blazing new territory. I put a lot of stock into that.

For this year, I will probably have my hands on:
LBP
Left4Dead
Fallout3
Dead Space
Rock Band 2

PoP and Mirror's Edge are on the bubble.

I do not currently own both systems, but did at one point have a 360, currently have a PS3. The aforementioned Magic PC rendered the 360 worthless to me. I have no plans of buying another 360.

wonder what 2009 will bring?

Mass Effect 2 vs God of War 3?
Assassins Creed 2 vs Call of Duty 6
sleeper hits??? Alan Wake and Heavy Rain?
will 2009 be the year of the "Cinema Style Action Game"? i'd like to coin CSAG now please :)

as far as this year, the list of "must haves" is pretty damn long.
I have both systems (sans Wii) and expect that the 360 will be getting love on a scale of 3 to 1 from me.

Here's hoping that Prince of Persia, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge prove to be those additional must haves I've been trying to shun for the sake of my wallet! Thank GOD my kids will soon be of "gaming age" soon, then I can quit with the excuses :)

I am sooooo using my son to get games when he's old enough. I've been very forthcoming about this with my wife, but I don't think she believes me.
