View Full Version : Buy the new Final Fantasy?

How so? If it was the new FF title or the next Bioshock or any other equally big AAA title, 75% of this site would be buying it. It's a gaming website and gamers tend to buy the big, fancy games. :p

This statement intrigues me. I thought I'd put it to the test.

Pretend there is a new Final Fantasy game coming out this year. (Is there one? I don't know. Use the real one if you like. We're talking, a proper whatever-number-they're-up-to sequel.) Will you buy it?

I voted other because I'm not a fan of FF games. However, if you'd chosen the next Bioshock as your example then "Yes, absolutely!" wouldn't do it justice. ;)

Yes, I picked Final Fantasy on purpose. And I'm sad you picked "Other?" and not "No way!". Not being a fan of the series is VERY much a part of what is being tested here.

The thing is, how many of us know someone who's definitely getting (this fictional) Final Fantasy, and will be able to borrow it when they're done? That's what I did with 4, 6, 8, and 10.

...huh. That's interesting.

Then I misunderstood. Your poll is designed to test Gunny's statement which referred to AAA games in general. That's why I picked "other". Picking "No way!" would indicate that I wasn't a fan of AAA games.

/edit - on reflection, going by the above I shouldn't have picked "Yes, absolutely!" even you had chosen Bioshock because that option would still be wrong for some AAA games (like FF). Now I've confused myself!

Oh, sorry. Yeah, this is Final Fantasy specific.

Perhaps when this poll has run its course I can try it again with Bioshock. ;)

I will have it day one, midnight if at all possible. Hell, I'll be doing that with two numbered FF games next year.

EDIT: That really shouldn't come as a shock to anyone, what with the fact that 2 of the 3 games in my sig that I'm "now playing" are FF games. :p

I voted Probably, even though I don't really play JRPGs anymore. The reason being, I may make an exception for this title (I'm referring to FF13) as I grew up on FF games and 13 does look pretty boner-iffic from the screen shots I've seen so far.

You damn betcha I'll be buying it. For all the hate people here have on their main line games*, I've enjoyed the hell out of EVERY DAMN ONE.

(Meaning Final Fantasy 1-12, including X-2, damnit.)

Probably,

But I will also buy the games that deserve to be bought. Like Brutal Legend. I won't deny the underdogs their money anymore. Dead Space taught me.

I don't mind saying I had fun with 10-2. Clearly a cash grab, way worse than 10, 10 stands better on its own... but it was fun.

Probably. It would depend on what I am currently playing, if I am buried to the hilt in Modern Warfare 2 then I have no need for a 60+ hour RPG. If it's a lull between AAA titles then I would purchase it. The thing with Final Fantasy is I know I'll play it at some point, but it takes a back seat to other new releases.

Kelegacy

Nope. I don't buy games on day one anymore. That's so passe.

However, I might cave for FFXIII...if it gets good reviews and if I can find it for less than $60. Bioshock I will love to play, but only if that gets good reviews and is a meaty adventure as well.

I only pay $50-60 for games with life. If they are over in 5-6 hours, no thanks. So a game like FFXIII would probably be worth it for me since I'll probably get about 50 hours of fun out of it. Bioshock 2, I have a feeling will be much shorter than its predecessor. Sort of like RE5 vs. RE4.

I probably will get it. There's something about the polish a AAA RPG gets, the warm feeling of throwing in a Final Fantasy. I feel like I'm part of some sort of gaming legacy, I dig it. I'd compare it to...okay. I thought of a metaphor and I don't want to step on anyone's toes or blaspheme anyone's religion; that's really not my point. But I think it's apt.

I think playing Final Fantasy is like a religious pilgrimage for gaming. You do it because you might want to, but because it is something that (for the most part) all dedicated gamers do. It's a shared experience, even if it's not pleasant (we all love a good Tidus joke, whether we liked the game or not). Other RPGs are like more personal spiritual experiences, that you can share with people of the same sect as you or not, whatever you see fit.

Yeah, I'd be there day one. I know they are not for everybody but you can't deny the quality of main line Final Fantasy titles. They are incredibly polished experiences with a lot of longevity. If you plop down 50-60 bucks for an FF title and you are at all into jrpgs, you know you are going to get your money's worth.

I voted other. There are several factors for me buying a big name game.

A) Do I have something that will play it (ie PC, 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, etc.)?
B) Does it look like something I'm actually going to play?
C) Do I have the money?
D) Is this something I can wait for a price drop?

If the first three answer yes and the last is no, then I will usually buy it. Take Fallout 3 for example, I went so far as to build a whole new computer just to play Fallout 3. The nice thing is, I got to play other games too so it wasn't a big deal but I rarely will buy a new system just for one game. I'm loving my new computer, even a year later so no regrets there but if it were a console I might be thinking differently.

I buy a lot of games and if I don't think I'm going to play through the vast majority of the game I will probably pass, or wait for a price drop.

I recently picked up Mirror's Edge on a gogamer.com sale. Now this isn't a big franchise but it was a pretty big deal when it was released. If I had of paid $40-$60 for it I would have been pissed. The game was just ok and very short but for the $6 it was a fine deal. There are too many factors to just go on brand name alone.

Final Fantasy 6 is one of my favorite games ever but I lost interest in the series after 9. I never beat 8, barely got into 10, and haven't tried 12.

If I actually am employed next year when this comes out, i'll most likely buy it day one. I'm hoping there is a nice pre-order goodie with it too...

I put down other. It depends on the trailers, the team behind it, and what I can find out about the battle system and such. Out of the main line, I really only like FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFIX and FFXII. There are quite a few holes there.

The Final Fantasy games are hit or miss with me. VI is one of my favorite video games of all time, but this does not give the series a free pass. The series has taken some really unusual turns as far as gameplay and story. I am not a fan of the current character designer now either.

That said, I did have a a lot of fun with XII, despite the idiotic licensing system, so I figure I will give the new one a try. It does look pretty cool so far, and the characters don't look like ladyboys so far.

I'll probably be doing that, but mostly because my wife and I will be playing together, so one of us on PC and the other on PS3. :) Well, hopefully anyway, she only made it to the mid 50s in FFXI. I've got to pester her to play again......... :D

Can't stand the staggering majority of JRPGs, and Final Fantasy are the worst of the lot as far as I'm concerned, though I might try the new MMO as long as there's a way to do so for free.

I voted 'other' as I'll have to get my hands on the battle system myself before I'll know if I'll be able to put up with it for 50 hours or whatever it takes to finish a FF game these days.

I'm semi-interested in FFXIII but FFXIV is where my real interest lies. Odd because I normally can't do MMOs just because of time but for some weird reason FFXIV has me really interested.

I used to buy most AAA titles when they came out, no matter what the genre, just from getting caught up in the hype.

This year I've decided to knock that on the head. I'm probably going to pass on most of the really big titles unless it's something which interests me personally. As a series, FF has never done much for me so unless I hear something that turns me around, I'll wait until I can find it cheap or borrow it from somebody.

Well, when I first borrowed 4, it was called 2... so that helps the pattern.

You forgot 12 too :)

The US version of 12 was leaked on the internet about a month before its release, so when I bought it on launch day, I had almost beaten it already. I guess one could argue that I was borrowing it for that period of time...

I voted probably, while I LOVED 7 and played 8, 9-12 just didn't appeal to me at all.

13 is the first one I've seen in years that I actually want to pick up. 13 Versus I actually want more, but by the looks of things unless I get a PS3 it aint happening... yet.

The only FF it's similar to is XI, in that there is no battle cut, everything is there on the field, and it's an open world similar to an MMO. It is quite possibly the best game in the series, and one of my top ten of all time, were I to compose such a list.

The only short fall is it's story, but that's mostly because it has less impact than other games in the series by focusing more on a conflict than individual characters. It does have Balthier, though, who is probably one of the smoothest characters in any game.

So wrong, so wrong. It doesn't play like any other FF, or JRPG for that matter. It's like a western company created a Final Fantasy for western gamers. It's a great game. At least give it a try some day.

I think you might be gender confused. As as far as gender roles are concerned, society dictates those, so in another dimension, or in a different society, you could be a totally different type of "boy".

Who says that having long hair, final-fantasy style clothing or have fair features is a bad thing? I worry about the people who are too "masculine" to play FF games. You know what they say...

Then you're missing out on fantastic series based on some pretty superficial (and mostly inaccurate) ideas of what the characters are like. Your loss, though.

Voted probably. I have a PS3, and have not really played a FF game since 7; 8 got me to quickly quit, and I have not been back since. This one does look fairly good from what I have seen, and I have not played a good jRPG in years (granted, I no longer even try most).

Haven't really enjoyed a FF since 7. I somewhat like what they did with...12 I think it was...but the grindfest it turned into really turned me off.

I'd buy another Crisis Core in a second though. That was one of my favorite PSP games.

At the risk of being brutally snarked by Mr. Kelegacy, I'll probably hold off on this one...not so much for the generally high levels of teen angst or the Dawson's Creek with Swords plots (to be honest, I do love me some melodrama)...but because I just don't see myself having the time to invest that one of Square's beasts requires...

You can hate Final Fantasy, I will not mock you. But it just bothers me when people talk about Final Fantasy as if it's some giant dragqueen/gay homage. People usually say this type of stuff when they're insecure with their own sexuality.

That wasn't nearly as brutal of a snarking as I expected :D

I was trying to say that I do enjoy the melodrama quite a bit, but I just don't think I'm willing to make the time investment a FF game generally requires.

I don't think there's anything wrong with finding it difficult to empathize with a lead character who looks like the worst kind of emo kid sterotype. It has nothing to do with being homophobic, or insecure, it has to do with being a bloody grown man who's rather too old for that sort of thing.

Besides which, it does get a bit cliche after a while. If anyone here comes across looking like they've got gender issues here, it's Yoshitaka Amano. Look at how many of his villains are near-drag-queens or at least far more ragingly effeminate than the latest emo kid protaganist can approach.

I guess I don't notice it. I'm too interested in having fun with the game to notice that the characters are wearing eyeliner or something. Plus, that stuff doesn't really bother me at all, even at the ripe old age of 28.

The only FF that I can safely say I had to put down because I was annoyed by it and its characters was FFX. But it had little to do with the characters and more with the dialogue. It was creepy and uncomfortable, as were their interactions. I wanted to like it, I really did. Tried twice, couldn't get past the 10 hour mark.

But FFXII, IMO, got rid of that "girly-boy" stuff that people hate. The main character wore a tribal-style outfit with his chest exposed, but neither him nor the rest of the cast displayed any sort of Kuja-style effemininity. Great characters all around, very well designed.

Still need to try FFXII. The "MMO offline" approach is always intriguing to me, even if FFXI isn't exactly my favorite choice to model that off of. I even tried pretty hard to like the .Hack games for the same reason, but it just was too repetitive to put up with.

It's another stereotype. Heck, to throw out another, at least they're better than Toriyama characters.

Aside from a few characters the designs of FF characters have been pretty good. A bit ridiculous at times, but still pretty good.
