I woke up this morning with a cough, fever, running nose, and body aches. You know what that means.
Yup, one of my freshmen in the class I TA gave me the swine flu. We had a confirmed case in their dorm (all my students live in the same dorm) last week.
Looks like I won't be making it in tomorrow after all :(
Ouch! Hope you feel better.
I hate when people I have to intereact with in work/school settings decide it is better to sread the illness than to stay home. I used to be that way until I realized it was less productive to get half the staff sick and have everyone miss work than for me to miss a day or two.

Too bad that's not the attitude of just about every manager out there. 'Cause you know that when you call in, the boss is rolling his/her eyes and wondering what excuse you're using this time to recover from last night's bender. The guilt trip they lay on you is lame.
You're expected to come into work unless you've lost a limb. Anything else is malingering. :D
Oh, and that sucks that you've got the Pig Plague, Sara. I hope you feel much better very soon. :(

I actually considered coming anyway, but the only thing worse than infecting my entire department by going in to work today and tomorrow would be infecting the entire convention. :(

You could probably make the news, though.
Reignite the entire swine flu scare.

Actually, while I feel sick, I don't feel unbearable. I'm debating the possibility of going and wearing a mask to avoid being an outbreak money. Feel free to weigh in- should I stay home and lose all the money I've invested in the trip, miss out on a great weekend, and miss celebrating my 1 year anniversary with my bf, or should I go, do everything I can to avoid spreading illness, and wear a surgical mask the whole time?

Totally up to you. I don't mind getting sick. I have a few sick days saved up at work. ;)

I can say with some confidence that you won't be the only one there with Captain Tripps H1N1.
So long as you follow contagion procedures - limit hand shakes, use a ton of Purell, and sneeze/cough into a hanky - then you likely won't trigger an epidemic.

I have a few sick days saved up at work. ;)I just texted rini, but if you make sure she feels the same way, I'll finish the work I have to do here and see how I'm feeling, then possibly head up later today. (The bright side is I'm already excused from classes today and tomorrow, so I wouldn't have to wait until tomorrow to come).

Yep, even though it has a fancy name, H1N1 is just another form of the flu and is no more contagious than any other strain. And before anyone comes in with how dangerous it is, killing people and all, news flash...people die from the flu every year. It's just that more people caught this one.

My friend made out with a girl apparently the night before she got the swine flu. When I was visiting him last month we kept freaking out about what to do if he got it.
As for the "Should I go?" query, I hate to sound like a downer but I think you'd feel bad if you gave it to someone, even with all the precautions. I don't know how easily transmitted it is, so take my thoughts with a pile of salt.

It's just that more people caught this one.In theory it actually is more contagious than a normal flu. We generally don't have antibodies yet for it, so it likely will affect more people. But it's actually a slightly less than average strain of the flu in terms of severity.

I thought the jury was still out on it being more contagious. I didn't think there was any real science behind that, just the correlation of large numbers of cases.

I didn't think there was any real science behind that, just the correlation of large numbers of cases. It's a new strain which very, very few people have antibodies for, so without any countermanding evidence we have to assume it will have a very high contagion rate.

Right, but doesn't contagion rate have a lot more variables than that? Things like airborne transmission survival time and such?
DoctorFinger

Right, but doesn't contagion rate have a lot more variables than that? Things like airborne transmission survival time and such?Absolutely. But when any one variable is swung so drastically one way or another, it moves the overall equation a lot. If a flu strain ever got the airborne transmission survival time of say the common cold, it may produce much the same results.

Of course he couldn't even bother to fill up the water pitcher YET AGAIN, even though it was the one thing I asked him to do yesterday, so I shouldn't be surprised. :( )

Students are spreading rumors about the school closing, and apparently kids in the dorms that are sick are being asked to leave until they're better. Craziness.
