"We are thrilled to announce that we found out we're expecting our 19th child," mom Michelle Duggar told the "Today" show Tuesday morning.

The 42-year-old Arkansas mom - who has been pregnant for an inconceivable 12 years of her life - was surprised to find out she was expecting again just eight months after giving birth to baby number 18.

Im fine with people having as many kids as they damn well please....

It's less the attitude than the reaction. People who say things like 'I can't imagine having a kid' or 'kid's are such a bother' are either NOT parents, or they simply have no idea what it is to BE a parent. But 9 times out of ten it's the former.

I agree with him. Anyone who says the statement he was reacting to is incredibly close-minded. There's nothing wrong with having, or wanting kids. If anything, my life has become far better having a kid than not.

Now, having 19 kids...I just find that insanity. :p

Now that I do, my entire life has changed, I've never been happier than this moment, and I feel like more of a man than I thought I was.

Now marriage on the other hand...

But they decided after having a miscarriage that they wanted to leave the number of children they have up to God.

That's a pretty dumb approach to any decision. I blindfold myself before I hop in the car, I figure I'll let God decide where I'm driving to. It doesn't work out too well.

I have no intention of ever having kids. It's not a matter of being "closeminded", it's a matter of responsibility. This world has enough people in it without me or anyone else adding more just to feel better about themselves.

And the smug attitude of some parents pisses me right the fuck off. "I pity you", seriously? Did it even occur to anyone how unbelievably arrogant and condescending that sounds? You want to bitch about John being closeminded, wheres the bitch about the unmitigated self-importance of a statement like that.

You popped out a kid, whoopty fucking shit, millions of people do it every day. It does not magically make you any more of a man, or more wise or intelligent, it just means you have one more responsibility in this world, and if you acted any less than responsibly it would make you a horrible human being, but you don't get props just for doing your damn job as a parent and you sure as hell never earned any right to look down on people who aren't and had the wherewithal to not jump down that path without looking.

Eh, I've been around enough kids to know that parenting isn't for me, and I simply don't see the allure. I am the 4th oldest of some 30-odd cousins. I have friends with kids of multiple ages, and I just don't see it.

I understand that people who have kids seem to really enjoy it, but everything about the responsibility and hassle turns me off. That part of my brain just works differently than other people I guess.

I hold no ill will towards people who have kids and/or want them, but come on, 19? How can you disagree that isn't related to some mental disorder?

It's pretty funny how they think it's up to God is they get pregnant. I think it has more to do with the father coming all up in that bitch every night. Seriously these people must get down. So far their oldest kids have been getting married young and they too are already having kids.

I've met that lady, I think... She's one of those hardcore Christian Bible-bashers. Hell where I actually live, also in Arkansas, social services took away this one woman's kids, or some of them; she had more than she could afford. It's not uncommon around these parts, actually. I get that it's a free country and you can do what you want, but we have too many people, in my opinion there should be a limit. Not even a low limit, just like... 6 kids is a cut off point or something. Apparently the Pope and other Christians don't get it; people complain about there not being enough jobs, housing, or whatever, and yet keep on pumping out units. Wtf.

It's nuts, we're crammed packed enough in this country. Enough's enough, I'm moving to Ireland :D

I recently started talking about having a kid with my GF, although I still feel a bit like you at times (world is shit etc, etc), and I'm warming up to it cause she really wants it and it forced me to think about it as well (that sounds negative but it really isn't).

But I can't believe the amount of crap the rest of society or people around you give you when you tell them you have no interest in having a kid. People actually look at you like you're insane. Those people can fuck right off.

Also the nerve of some people to mingle in in something so personal ("haven't you guys started yet?, When is the first one coming?". What about we fucking can't for some reason bitch, ever think about that and the hurt you could cause?) Lot's of people don't really know what's going on but feel free to pry into something so private. Fuck them.

Man, here's hoping God stops them from having too many more kids. They're both over 40 already, and the chances of having a kid with Down syndrome are just going to keep going up from here.

Not trying to make fun of kids with Down syndrome or anything, but I would imagine trying to take care of them while also taking care of 18 other kids would be a bit of a hassle.

Um, that's exactly what they are doing. Announcing it on the Today show says you are doing it for the publicity and the paycheck.

Funny how all of the sudden people are popping out entire litters now that reality shows will pay them for it.

I'm not against big families, mind you, but 19 kids is unnecessary and unneeded. To me, it's tantamount to child abuse. There is no way every one of those kids is going to be getting the mental support and growth they need from the parents. It is the older siblings raising the kids as the parents are out on the publicity tour.

Gotta love religious nuts and their cult families. Bets on how soon the oldest daughter starts popping out puppies for Jeebus?

Best cross thread post EVER!

Apparently the father is a software engineer, making a decent living and they are able to feed and clothe all the kids still at home. That doesn't mean they are sane or stable or anything, as 19 kids seems just a tad bit excessive, but at least they aren't living off welfare or leeching off others.

EDIT: I was once upon a time one of those who was resolutely not going to have kids. Then statistics kicked me in the nuts and I became a Dad. Best thing to ever happen to me, as my kids are nothing but joy in my life. It isn't for everyone, but it is really hard to know if it will suit you until you have a kid, and of course by then it is too late.

I've been both places, and I will say it changes you. I never really thought it would impact me, but it has. I understand you don't want people judging others for not wanting/having kids, but you also can't judge people that have, simply because you don't know the impact it has on you.

There are emotions here you just don't feel from anything else in life. I didn't want to have kids. I made a mistake, and now I'm taking responsibility. I'm glad I did!

In my view, that's a mistake no one should ever make. It's a sentient life being brought into this world, and it should never be done by any means other than willfully.

I respect that you've owned up to that mistake and are making good on it, but it doesn't make you any better than anyone else, it just means you're doing what any decent person should be in that situation.

Remove the "over" from that sentence and you have the gist. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I respect people that don't add to the populace. I have always wanted kids though. I am on the same wavelength as them. A part of me hopes to relive some of my own great childhood with my boy. I just really love kids. Probably because they haven't become like us yet. And I think that's a good thing. I also just really love people with great imaginations and kids always seem to have great ones.

I think single people, or people without children, should actually get a tax break. Meanwhile married and with children gives the most tax incentives (not that it evens out the cost of having a child however). With a population like ours, give these people some rewards for not reproducing.

Oh no, he was told right. I extended a courtesy to J (a mistake) by offering to send him a videocard I had no use for, since you were always bitching about his infamous shitty FX 5200. He reciprocated this courtesy by accusing me of being a homosexual faggot. Ironic.

Anyways, people like J Arcane are leeches on society and to hear a moron like him wax poetic about the downfalls of Western society and the mistakes of those who have kids before they're ready is horrifically annoying. My mother was 30 years old when she had me, and went from being in the Army and subsequently traveling/fucking around to realizing after she had me that she had to get her shit together. She went into the nursing program and emerged at the top of her class with an RN license.

So to dismiss so callously those whom have kids and/or have them before they're ready is offensive and ridiculous. Especially coming from someone who hasn't done anything with their life. What a coward. J is the sort of coward that'd never say those things to anyone's face.

1) I made one single line indirect comment regarding his behavior that was in the interests solely of correcting someone else's misunderstanding. I have been ignoring every word from his mouth for some 3 years now, so I think my "not egging Riley on" quota is pretty friggin' met at this point. I wouldn't have even known he posted it if you people hadn't quoted him.

2) That isn't what I bloody said, and is in fact very nearly the opposite of what I've been saying this whole thread. I simply made the point that producing a child does not inherently make anyone special or better than anyone else, and it's offensive to those who choose not to, to suggest otherwise or treat them as inferior for their decision. If you read something other than what I said from that, that's your own prerogative, but I'll kindly ask that you at least keep your criticisms of me in the future to things I actually wrote, not something you assumed I wrote by picking words at random from my posts.
