Southern California, a place of dreams and beautiful weather, however every year around this time the Santa Ana winds start blowing through and we have to deal with weeks of fires.
This week kicked it all off. Right now the big local fire (http://www.knbc.com/news/17697447/detail.html?dl=mainclick) is maybe 15-20 miles away and pushing closer. The sky is dark and chunks of ash are blowing in the wind, (it almost looks like snow, but it’s not nearly as fun to catch on your tongue.)
It’s terrible to breathe and unpleasantly hot. Of course we can’t turn on the air conditioning because that just brings in the foul air outside.
As always, the firefighters are doing the amazing job that they always do, risking life and limb on the uneven hillsides, where a sudden gust of wind can send the fire hoping across to their flank.

Yesterday was horrible in terms of smoke coverage. But today Pierce College closed because of the soot and unhealthful air. At least one of my friends was already evacuated because the fire in Porter Ranch/Chatsworth jumped the 118 Freeway.

I left class to get a snack yesterday and peered over the library. Much to my suprise, the sky looked close to what I'd imagine the apocolypse will be like. Orange tinted clouds with a brown/black center, it looked supernatural and completely evil. Best part? Didn't phase me in the least. I thought to myself "Oh great, another fire." and went to go buy me some blueberry pop tarts. Being a long time SoCal resident, you get used to natural disasters. 2 or 3 fires a year. Hell, I like earthquakes. Its the same feeling you get after spending a day on rollercoasters and can be quite enjoyable, as long as you don't freak out and nothing falls on you.

I was just reading that it's gotten over to Granada Hills at this point.

The second and fifth picture in that link make it look closer that 15-20 miles, and very uncomfortable.

The video is just crazy, that is a huge fire.

I'm in North San Diego county, and it looks like I missed the fires in Oceanside. Last year was brutal though. Skies red, smoke everywhere. Fire got within 5 miles of my apartment, and I actually had to evacuate for a night.

The 15-20 miles is from where he is. Restless is in Ventura County, and is probably 20-30 minutes via freeway from where I am. It's ~5-10 miles from me. Fairly clear sky today though, and the winds have died down alot.
The Marek fire (Tujunga/Hansen Dam area) for the most part is contained, and I think on of my friend's Eagle Scout projects was up there, dunno if it's still there now :(
The Sesnon Fire is 2 or 3 exits west from where the Metrolink train crash happened a few weeks ago, the crash site burned last night by the way.

This map (http://tinyurl.com/3sc442), if I did it right, should show how close the fire is to me, and how far the effects can be seen, where RestlessAvenger is.

EDIT: supposedly the first link shows just the evacuation map. This map (http://tinyurl.com/3tz3fh) should have locations for myself and Restless overlaid.

Seeing as I live in the Midwest, wildfires aren't too big of a problem for me. However, remember that big batch of wildfires that went through New Mexico a few years back? I was born in Los Alamos, and the fire went through there. Burned down the homes of some friends of the family. Definitely a rough business. Stay safe out there, guys.

I was in high school when that went down, had a friend that had family lose a house up in Los Alamos. You could see and taste the smoke all the way down here in The Burque.

As for Restless and Rogue, here is to hoping the fire doesn't damage your areas too much. Also, I hope your friends eagle scout troop is safe and sound, Rogue.

Oh yeah, Rogue... that time I suggested that you could die in a fire... I take that back and would feel terrible if it actually happened now.

Well, the project was like 5 years ago. I'm not entirely sure if that's even still there, as another friend's project was burned a year after because of one of the wildfires in the area.

eh, that map only shows the evacuation area. Though, the evacuation does end just at the end of my street, and then a few blocks north. If a fire breaks out in Bell Canyon, evacuation might happen (but doubt it).
Wait, you die in a fire! Stupid achievement whore!

I went outside today and smelled burning trees. I live in Fullerton CA, far away from any of the fires.

If it does come down to evacuation, just let your mother know that she has a place to stay.

You really need to be in IRC more to get the full breadth of these conversations. Restless and my mom have a thing, but then again, she has a thing with most of the TF2 players as well.

Yeah, I really do need to hang out in the IRC channel more, and start playing TF2 again.

The Socal fires seem to be worse every year. Good luck to anyone in harms way down there, and to your homes.

Last year some relatives of mine in San Diego got evacuated. They ended up fine, but it is amazing how major these fires get.

I had actually taken a motorcycle trip through that area last year at this time and had left only a day before all hell broke loose. I had ridden right through the areas that ended up completely burning, I felt very fortunate to get to see it before it was destroyed.
