I'm thinking of upgrading from my Ipod Shuffle to an 8ish gig sized item. I need the ability to select albums etc. It's a pain to sift through 70 songs to hear the few that you are in the mood for.

I was looking at the 3rd Generation Ipod Nano's and they seem pretty stable. The 4th Generation's are apparently non comability with older charge stations etc, and other things like accelerometer causing trouble.

Any comments?

One word, Zune.

One word, Zune.

One word, why?

Do they still have the whole free conversion/download of all your iTunes songs going?

That's the Phat, right? Best priced video players out there. If you just want audio, look at the different models of Sansa flash players, they also feature micro SD expansion, for phot storage, song storage, or just expansion.

I try to steer people away from the Zune unless price is the majore deciding factor, as you are forced to use their Software. With other MP3 players there are solutions like rockbox, media monkey, etc.

Stay the fuck away from the Portal Player Sansa! That is, the View and the e200s. While reasonably nice hardware, the firmware on these things is so riddled with bugs, it's like it has electro-AIDS or something. Check out the official forums for the View (http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board?board.id=view). I'd say there's a list of usability-breaking bugs as long as my arm, but I'd need Dhalsim style arms for that.

However, the Sansa Clip (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2007/10/sandisk-sansa-clip-review.php) is actually a really good player. Could be a good choice if you're looking for a Shuffle like player, but want to be able to do things like select songs.

Have you put RockBox onto either of your Sansa Players?

It's not ported yet. They've only gotten it onto the first version e200. It made for a damn sweet player with rockbox on it (have experienced but not owned). But I haven't been able to track down one of v1 e200s.

For reference I have a 16GB View. It seemed like a good idea at the time, since I'm exposed to all sorts of super magnets and the like so I don't really want a player with a hard drive and at present I carry 14GB of music with me. So a high capacity, flash memory player was really what I needed, but the thing has more issues that my paranoid schizophrenic ex-girlfriend (and like stupid chump I am, I still love it just like I loved her. Guess I'm just a sucker for punishment...)

It's disappointing that Sandisk hasn't supported Rockbox (I mean with information, rather than money) since they did at one point actually contact them about porting it to the (original) e200 (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2006/05/rockbox-on-the-sandisk-sansa-e200-series.php).

Sad that the View is buggy, I recall high hopes for that player. It reviewed well from what I saw as well. Could you have gotten a lemon?

There's no reason the View shouldn't have lived up to those high hopes. It's just the firmware that's broken and they could fix that. But a year after it's release and several firmware update later and they've only marginally improved things. How it makes good business sense to not invest in fixing the issue makes no sense to me. A cursory glance of their official forums shows there's major issues. Look a bit closer and you start to see threads like this (http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=view&thread.id=8610) or this (http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=view&thread.id=8499) where prospective owners are told by current owners not to buy one and people discuss what to purchase instead.

I don't know, I can't think about it without my head hurting...

It's this one:

I've also wanted to have Red vs Blue on it, just for quick 3 minute bursts. Also I have iTunes copy of Dr. Horrible etc.

The other option I had for a big Christmas present is Batman: The Animated Series but I have never watched it before, so I'm not too sure if it's worth it. I know it's great, but is it something I really want/could use a lot of.

Do you really want a Flash Player?

The 80 Gig iPod classic is 200, might be even less as we get closer to the Holiday.

There are refurbs on NewEgg for 189 too.

Is that the current gen (80 gig). And is that new one?

That is the "6th Gen" more commonly known as the iPod Classic. Lamentably, no third party firmware as of yet for the model.

Ah, apparently the newer one has Genius and cover flow...meh. Might look into that one though, thanks for the link.

I just checked the Apple Forums on this, and I come back frightened.

But yeah, it supports genius. But keep in mind, Genius is a pyramid scheme.

What the fuck are you talking about? Genius simply makes playlists of similar songs in your collection. It works pretty well from my usage.

I'd also recommend going with the Classic if you won't be doing things like Jogging. If I didn't use an iPhone I'd be using the Classic too, the storage can't be beat.

Genius is about recommending you new music, to buy. Though, as such might be what gets Apple into supporting over the air downloads onto the Phone and Touch.

I think Genius goes from your library. Matthias told me he didn't even know he had a song in his library until he was reminded of it by Genius

Did he mention how it forms Skynet? I was mostly being facetious, Jeffbax just got all knee jerk on it. World of Warcraft is the only Pyramid scheme I can think of right now. Genius is like most other things that track what you like, and ends on trying to offer you more of that.

Creative Zen or Sansa e280 (with Rockbox) are my current ideas for mp3 players.

There is software that can convert the protected files, but its time consuming as its done realtime.

It has been awhile since I have looked, I do not think I have found something that workes with what has been implimented since 8.

No, you are wrong. Have you even used it? Apparently not.

Genius builds a playlist for you - of music you ALREADY have. Optionally, it will suggest other songs with links to the iTunes store. Using genius on your iPod itself doesn't show this. Within iTunes it only shows the store suggestions if you chose too, you can use Genius without.

Stop spreading FUD.

How long does it take for you to take your head out of your ass to see someone is just fucking with you man?

Is it legal?

On topic, technically no. Any circumvention of a device's or media's copy protection is a violation of the DMCA. Practically, no individual has faced consequences for doing this with a media that they have usage rights to. And would most likely never be brought to court as there are way more cases in support of this. Sony lost a large one when it attempted to stop people from ripping their CDs to MP3 for example.

Plus how would they know that you stripped the protection off? Besides technically you are not modifying the file, just recording it to another file. The original is still intact and unmodified.

A few years back some guys built an App that let you browse the iTunes store, but missed out the step where DRM is added (as it's done locally). Apple hired them. I think that pretty much shows Apples stance on this stuff.

I'd say get the "real" batman animated series, which was the original one from the 1990's...unless you have that then i'd say get another xmas present...

My friend got a 3G Nano, and he hates it. The accelerometer is driving him nuts. He asked me to find some kind of way to disable it. I jokingly suggested I open it up and tear the accelerometer out, and he took it 100% seriously. I wouldn't do that (don't want to be responsible for expensive shit like that), but it shows how much he really hates how inconvenient it is.

The E200 series Sansas are fine IMO. My girlfriend has one and it works just fine. You can find the first versions of them on Buy.com if you're interested...for a reasonable price too. The one I got my girlfriend is an 8Gig and was $59.99 Refurb. I'd put Rockbox on it because I'm curious to try it out, but I don't think she'd know how to use it.
