View Full Version : Home: System Seller?

Sony's Kaz Hirai recently stated (http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=6866) that he expects PlayStation Home to be a system seller for the Playstation 3.
The question is simple.
Will people buy a Playstation 3 to play Home?

I voted no. It looks interesting, but it's not something I could see anyone actually buying the console.

Not a chance. LittleBigPlanet is a system seller, not Home. Home is a nice bonus.

I say the same thing; even though it might interest some people already owning a PS3, I don't see it as a system seller.

It's a big piece of unnecessary shit that won't move any systems. Unless it's to 34 year old housewives that need to cyber with 17 year olds.

You just sold Home (and maybe a PS3) to a ton of 17 yr old horny dorks.

Home will work in conjunction with other products to push system sales. You can look at that as a yes or a no. Personally, I think the number that will buy a PS3 for Home alone is very small. Though some of those kids in the beta really love that shit.

I believe that there are some people who will, and others who will at least partially due to Home, but that is true for a lot of games.

Home is really not a reason to buy a PS3 and I don't think it was intended to be. I think all it was supposed to be was a cool feature. Buying a PS3 for home would be kinda like buying a 360 for the dashboard or a Wii because you really like the Miis. It's not supposed to sell systems, it's just an interesting feature for people who want to use it.

Home is very much aimed at the casual crowd. The fact the console is so expensive pretty much pushes it out of the casual / mainstream market.

From the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Home)
PlayStation Home (also marketed and referred to simply as Home) is a community-based service for the PlayStation Network which has been in development since early 2005. Home allows users to create an avatar for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own virtual apartment space, which can then be adorned with items users can receive in several different ways. In the future the service will also expand, allowing players to have more sorts of clothing or bigger apartments. Sony wants to give people the tools to create their own things, but they also want a safe place for younger users to feel comfortable. Sony is aiming for the initial download to be under 500MB. Home was announced at the Game Developers Conference on March 7, 2007 and was originally scheduled for a global public release in September or October 2007.
During the Tokyo Game Show 2007, Home's full release was announced to be delayed until "Spring 2008". On 21 April 2008 Sony Computer Entertainment announced that Home would be delayed further and the closed beta would be extended until "Fall 2008". However it was confirmed that more PlayStation Network users would be invited to join the closed beta during this time. An announcement on the Official PlayStation Europe user forum confirms that invitations to the closed beta will be offered to winners of a weekly Warhawk online gaming event. Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that "Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition."

Absolutely not. it's an element that should have been included since day 1.
Blu Ray is the only non-game 'killer app' for the PS3.

i wouldnt understand why someone would buy a ps3 for Home ? id say its more about Blu-ray and Games
and i agree should have been a applation available day one

I doubt it (I voted no).
It's like asking if, the moment that Facebook or Myspace were created, more PC's were sold purely because people wanted PC's for those social apps.
Home may sell PS3's, but only after (or if) it actually takes off and becomes as popular as Facebook or any other social site. If enough people have friends who have Home, then it may push some to get a PS3.

Home is the dessert you get after ordering the meal. What they need to do is make a better dessert to accompany the dish. Right now, it's a pound cake.

Also... I like pound cake. I also like plain doughnuts instead of ones covered in icing, so what do I know.

I'm going to have to go with a definite "no." Honestly, I'm sure there are a ton of casual gamers who've absolutely no idea what Home even is. Someone else mentioned it above, but the Blu-Ray player and LBP are the pulls for people trying to make a decision, in my opinion.
I heard John McCain has eight PS3s with Home. :D

I'm laying of the sugary stuff. I could use to drop about 10 lbs. Personally, I was very partial to Phish Food ice cream. My queen though? The chocolate covered pretzel. My life for her.

A delicious blend of crunch and salty-sweet with the melt-in-your mouth goodness that only chocolate can bring? I'll sing the praise of chocolate-covered pretzels all day long.
They're a little melty, but damned if they aren't delicious

I selected Yes, because I am sure some people will / already have bought a system based on the premise of Home. I think the term "system seller" is too loosely defined, however.

What's funny? Seriously? In the past two months I've played my PS3 more than my PC and 360 combined. It's only getting better and the games this fall will solidify my statement even more.

No, because it will probably never come out. It will vertainly not be out for the PS3. All of the people who were driving forces behind that left, and the current economic climate is such that these companies need to hunker down and survive the nuclear winter.

Home is soon turning into the Duke Nukem Forever for the PS3. The PS3 might finally be getting some decent apps, but good lord, it has been 2 years. What a late bloomer. I essentially have zero interest in the thing, and Home won't help. Considering they are only releasing even more expensive consoles, instead of lowering the price of existing ones, one has to wonder what Sony is smoking. I won't even look at the thing until it is around $200 and delivers on promises made before it was even launched. I figure that will occur about a year after the release of the PS4. Will Sony learn there lesson by then?

I seriously doubt it (in and of itself) will sell the PS3 to people.

Unless women leave Facebook and migrate to PS Home, the latter will have failed to live up to its marketing. I don't think Home will sell a single system.
Not one.

No. It's too...specialized, maybe...to be a system seller. You can't market it like a game. The typical end user isn't going to care one way or another how they navigate to their games or Blu-rays.

Put me down in the "no way in hell" camp. Personally, I think you'd have to be pretty insane to think so. It won't sell systems any more than the 360's new "avatars" will.

I say no also, it may add to a customers reasoning but I don't think people will see Home and say "I'm buying a PS3 now". Most customer will have bought the PS3 for other reasons and merely see Home as another cool feature.

No way would Home sell systems. You buy a gaming console to play games, not to play a version of Second Life.

Some people will buy a PS3 for home. Some people dress up as foxes and try and fuck preschoolers. It doesn't make either one a good idea.
Home seems to be the lamer of the 2 changes coming this fall. As it's a bunch of avatars walking around commercials while going into virtual homes and such. It's stupid shit and no one will use it once the novelty of the first day wears off.

You people are all insane. I bought my PS3 specifically for Home! I can't play the damn thing at work, people keep interrupting, and i'm not so sure the general public like watching "M" rated games. I'd play it in my car, but pedestrians and other traffic are generally opposed to inattentive driving. And the last time i tried to game at red-lights some dude got pissed at me because i couldn't leave the stop right away (If you just killed King Bohan you can't just interrupt that awesome ending sequence now can you?)
I bought my Xbox360 for Home as well.

I seriously doubt many people would buy the PS3 for a second life clone. It might factor in if the person is thinking about using the PS3 for games or Blu-Ray, but I don't think it'll sell systems by itself.
