Just as he hinted (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/06/why-gore-verbinski-is-developing-video-games-and-likely-not-directing-bioshock.html) months ago, director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) has stepped away from the director's chair on Universal's upcoming film adaptation of the 2007 bestselling game BioShock. Replacing him will be Spanish filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, known to many filmgoers as the director of 28 Weeks Later.
The film was put on hold back in April due to concerns over the its potentially-enormous budget. However, now the studio appears to have found a way rein in their budget and resume production.

I remember reading this a few days ago, but at the time it was just rumored, not confirmed.

The story I read made it sound official, but after looking into it some more I think you're right and it's still unconfirmed that he has the job at this point. For right now, they are "in talks (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118007622.html?categoryid=1079&cs=1)" although the IMDb page (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1230526/) (which still may be rumor) lists him as director.
I'll keep an eye on it and see if anything else develops.

Bleh. 28 Weeks Later, I do not want. It wasn't bad...

Well, hopefully he'll stick to one film style this time. 28 Weeks Later went back and forth from trying to be like 28 Days so much it hurt.
Given the remake of the Ring (which I liked) and the Mexican, I would of rather had Gore working on it. Ah well.

Never mind 28 weeks later, the guy did Intacto, which gives me a good feeling about how he could handle this.

I cannot tell you how scared I was of seeing a certain German name here.

I really thought Uwe Boll was going to get his shot at directing a real video game inspired movie. There is still hope Uwe

The combination of those three are a guarantee the movie will be a low budget B movie.
Sigh.

Well, seems like a good step at any rate... Gore Verbinski may be capable of directing big budget action stuffs so it's popular, but from all accounts he has never directed an actor in his life.
I stilldon't hold out any hope for the final product though.
Un. Necessary.

Actually, from some source I don't remember (read it in the last few days), it will no longer be filmed in the US. This was how they lowered the budget, but it is also the reason Verbinski will not be directing it.

Outside the U.S.? Maybe there is a chance with Uwe Boll

With Kristana Loken as the sultry heroine, Jason Statham as the maniacal, kick-boxing founder of Rapture, and Chris Coppola as the goofy Big Daddy sidekick looking for a break into the journalistic world.

Yes, this. Intacto was wonderful. I want to see more films like that.
