IGN is reporting (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1018498p1.html) that some Best Buy and Gamestop stores have broken the street date on the PS3 Slim. If you are in the market, you might want to call around in your area and see if you can bag yourself one a few days early.

There was no street date as I remember. It was a staggered roll out, but by September, ALL retailers would have them.

I want one. I don't need one and it's actually a downgrade from my current PS3 but I want one....I can't explain it.

I was in Best Buy this afternoon and they had a stack of about a dozen of the slims at the front of the store. It was quite tempting... but I walked away from them.

There was a guy buying one when I went to grab my copy of Batman.

There was some confusion at the Best Buy I often frequent. Someone wanted to buy a PS3, but not the "retarded crap" that was for sale on the shelves (the PS3 slim model). He said, and I quote, "it looks like someone made a cheap copy of the PlayStation."
I guess you can't please everyone.

There was no street date to break, stores are able to sell them as soon as they get them.
East coast gamestops got their first units today. They didn't get very many at each store though...

I hate UPS too but it's going to my work and our UPS guy is pretty good so expecting to see it soon.

If this thing turns out to be in short supply, I'll just sell mine and wait a few months and get another.

By the by, this is simply the new PS3, not the "PS3 Slim." They're stopping manufacture on the old versions and this is simply the new hardware.
That won't stop it from being called the PS3 Slim from now to eternity, though.

Like how people in China call Chinese food... simply "Food"? Btw, my unit is out for delivery!

I'm just saying, it seems silly to refer to it as something else when all it's doing is replacing old hardware. Then again, it's not all the old PS3s will suddenly disappear, so there should be some kind of reference. Come to think of it, I don't know why I even brought it up, to much marketing I suppose. :)
Anyway, I'm asking for (permission to buy) one for Christmas; enough time to see if there's any potential problems, I figure.

I would have called your comment bullshit :) But my girlfriend asked if it was a clone yesterday. Like those cheap "Play tons of games" hardware emulators you can sometimes buy.
I do not think its cause it looked cheap I think its because the sudden drop in price. Also our store here is stupid as hell. For about an hour they had the slim for the new price, and the old ones for the old price.

I think it looks cheap. You ever watch any of the unboxing videos? They gave it a matte finish and turned the touch-sensitive controls (eject, power) into actual tactile buttons.
Just my opinion though. As much as I hate fingerprints on my PS3, the piano black gloss finish makes it look sexy as hell. :D

I have it in my hands right now... well, not right this second because I'm typing but it's sitting next to me and it's soooooooooo much better looking in person IMO. The photos don't do it justice.
The PS3 finally looks like a real game machine.

I agree. When the leaked slim images were released, I really did think it was a cheap, crappy, Chinese knockoff.

It may not have looked like a standard gaming system before, but it looks damn fine in my entertainment center.

Yeah, I think that was part of Kaz's main points where he wanted to correct Crazy Ken's flaws with the system and bring SCE back to where it needs to be and having the PS3 as a games machine first and foremost was part of that. He said that's why all the packaging and logos have changed too.
While I understand some people still like the look of the old fat unit I also know that some people like the original Duke controller for the Xbox and some people prefer the original phat DS over the lite.
Personally, the slim is the real PS3 and what it should have been all along but I'm biased since I like my game machines to look like game machines.

I can't help to think the well placed Professor Layton ad was someones comment toward the PS3. Diabolical box...I guess a 360 fan ;)
