Good stuff, but the story mode is retarded. It is essentially Brawl, but the game takes itself SUPER SERIOUSLY! That is okay though, I figure that I'll spend most of my time in the Quick Match mode (or whatever it is called).

I wish Terra was less focused on spamming Tornado. I had kind of hoped she would play sort of like Onion Knight does. I am pleased with her design though, and picked up the green hair variant as my first purchase.

Go play the demo, it'll give you a good idea of what to expect.

And yeah, I pretty much skip the cutscenes. They are too long and they make no sense.

Stupid Game Informer review. >_<
Yeah, that's part of what gave me pause. Of course, I should have known to discount the reviewes opinion when he said something along the lines of "like Crisis Core, it has good points, but it's not a good game overall". Crisis Core, was, of course, awesome, so this may be as well.

I've tried the demo, and I've gotta say, I'm impressed. So for those of you playing, does the combat get any deeper than just depleating the Brave of your opponant then beating the crap out of them with one attack? It seemed like I could just attack Brave with Circle with one attack, attack HP with Square with another attack, jump, and dash, and that was it. Do you get more options later on, like different attacks and manual blocking (I couldn't figure that out in my 10 minutes with it)?

If there's some depth to it I may just pick it up, it's the perfect game to tide me over til Persona hits in 4 weeks it seems.

Chris_D
08-26-2009, 06:42 AM
For me, it's not the kind of game I would normally play, but with the Square Enix polish and actually being a good game, well I'd love to get it for $20-30.

Suave Peanut
08-26-2009, 07:45 AM
Gorvi: it gets more complicated, I suppose. As you level up you gain more skills that you can allot to your circle and square attacks, and other general skills/attributes. Think along the lines of Kingdom Hearts in the style of Advent Children.

Widgetcraft

Blocking and dodging play a more important role in the game than the Beginner demo would have you believe. I think the Advanced mode of the demo is a better experience.

I have barely scratched the surface of the game yet but quite enjoy what I've played. The story is completely incoherent, but in that good, overblown, Square kind of way. And it looks yummy.

And for added pleasure, try explaining what happens in that initial cutscene to a 5 year old who had no idea who any of the characters are!

Natively, no, it's Ad-Hoc only. But, I'd bet it works with that Ad-Hoc party app you can download from the Japanese PSN so it could be played w/voice chat through the PS3. They really need to put that out here, it's stupid that it's not official in the US yet.

That it is. On a slightly related topic, I just heard this morning that Phantasy Star Portable 2 will have online play. Now that I'll be getting.

And yes, I caved and bought Dissidia last night, good god that thing has a novel for a manual. I haven't touched it yet, though, I'm going to try to fly through the last bit of Riviera I have left, then I'll dive into Dissidia. Apparently there's 3 hidden characters to unlock outside the default heroes and villians, and the only one I know of is Shantotto from FFXI. I wonder if they threw in a character from XII?

Also, I noticed that they're advertising the soundtrack in the manual going on sale this week for $23, 2 discs 55 tracks. I'm going to have to get that.

The manual is HUGE. Thankfully there are a lot of decent explanation/help menus in the game proper (all done in character, which is cute) so you don't HAVE to read it, but it's nice.

I was thinking of the little quests that they would put you on, (i.e. move your character across the screen in one move). It was a good source of PP (snicker) though.

Whelp, I'm an asshole: I just decided to download a save file with all the characters unlocked. I like the combat system, but going through Cecil's story was a chore, and there are a dozen of those things. I mean it drug on for upwards of an hour and a half, and you're usually just fighting shadows of the actual characters.

I just wanted to unlock Shantotto, which requires beating all the other modes. She isn't that great of a character, but I'm going to try to learn to play her well.

EDIT: She is good once you get the hang of her :)

Why do my favorite characters have to be mages? :( I want to smack things.

I like this game but Jesus Christ Sephiroth is a little girl whore. Seriously, my already fortified hatred for him is just being compounded with how uber they made him in this game to make all the kids happy.

The fact I play as Cecil doesn't help. Slow, single, deliberate attacks VS a million heatseeking, long range, quick attacks with an ending shockwave that goes in every direction SUCKS.

Maybe it's just me and my lack of attention to detail or something, but this game has one of the most incoherent "stories" I've ever seen. The game itself is fun enough, at least.

EDIT: Also, it kind of cracks me up how much Jecht doesn't fit in with the other bad guys. They all have these ridiculous costumes, and he just looks like some bum without a shirt.

Also, just to illustrate how much this story does NOT make sense to me, here is what happened after I beat the game with Cecil:

I get a cutscene showing Tidus, Squall, and Cloud. But...no Cecil? Then all of a sudden all of the heroes are just standing around, and walk up to Cosmos, who says they are going to all fall into true darkness for some reason. Then they look like they are in hell, and Cosmos is in a pillar of fire brought down by Chaos, and then everybody "falls into the shadows of despair."

And that's it! For as serious as the story mode takes itself, it's comical how incoherent it is.

Once you've levelled him up and unlocked more of his abilities he's pretty interesting to use, but he's got such a strange combination of land-based attacks vs. air-based magic that it's hard to combat the fast enemies.

I tend to hate Sephiroth whenever I have to fight him anywhere, be it Kingdom Hearts, FFVII or otherwise... though he wasn't that bad to fight against in Crisis Core.

Hey guys, decided to go full time here after Evil Avatar posted as news that blizzard is taking b.net as pay to play. It's not even fucking reporting/journalism anymore he takes things out of context and posts it as news. I really do not like him.

As for Dissidia, yay people are playing it!

I've gotten through the game all the way to the Knight of Light once again but I left my power charger at work(and i'm on my weekend). I agree with everyone that the story is incoherent but it's like watching certain kinds of anime. Obscurity wrapped in fantasy with words that could be in some really deep viking metal or emo song. Don't judge it too harshly it's dramatic for the sake of it(I skipped all cutscenes).

The characters are really distinctive and have their own play styles and you have to learn how to work with them. My problem with the game so far? It's too easy. I mean yes I've hit my snags against level 10+ over me phantasms but i've figured them out. The opponents are just not aggressive enough at this point so I'm hoping the game gets harder when I go through my second play through rounds.

I really hope there's a hell of a lot more skills for each character.

P.S. - Is it just me or did it seem like Cloud is easy mode?(I haven't played as sephiroth yet)

Maybe you're just good at this game!

I've been playing with Cloud (just got him to level 100, by the way!) and there have been many times when I get owned by guys many, many levels below me. Usually it's Sephiroth or Jecht that destroys me, I've noticed.

Another update on my progress, and I don't want to spoil too much, but once you beat the main story you unlock the missions to get the XI and XII characters, and once you conquer both of those you get another mission. That mission is where I am right now.

Ahh, I went around the carousel of cards clockwise and didn't even bother to look at the difficulty! I don't think I'm good! Haven't got the timing down to evade that HP attack from the one magic user where they create a magical bubble of explosion around them as the animation.

Really glad to hear they have characters from XII to unlock as well! What puts me out about this game however is...it is missing a lot of the the female leads. Tifa, Rinoa, Rikku, Yuna, Lulu, the obligatory Cid, even though the fact that they have Terra is awesome was I the only one who wanted to play out some of the 'Dead Fantasy' movie short moments? :P

do not start with a spell caster as your first try out of the game...all of the spell casters just plain SUCK.

Pick someone who uses a weapon, trust me...cloud, squall, zidane's got a crazy air game, warrior of light's got that pretty awesome shield of light that blocks all minor projectiles. You'll learn quickly what skills you'll want to keep and need and change for certain fights, nice follow ups, anti-death from above, be the death to those below, blocking, dodgingdodgingdodging, which moves you can avoid and the timing for chase encounters.

There's some characters that might seem powerful but have skills that leave them totally open so don't always be the first one to attack and then let them have it.

You can quit and then either pick up at the stage you left of at or start over at stage 1 of his story any time. Or, you can go into quick match mode and grind a little bit if you like, so sayeth the Moogles.

I did Cloud first to get a better feel for the game after getting positively whooped on I-3 with Warrior of Light. I felt the tutorial wasn't adequate enough for me. Did Terra after that and loved every moment of it. Back to Warrior of light now and while I am better at the game for sure, he is still a really hard character to win with against some of the opponents. I love battling Ultimecia with him, though.... that fight just always feels epic for some reason.

I'm just surprised how solid the mechanics are. You start out and you can must sorta mash your way to winning, but once you start fighting the enemies with better AI, you need to dodge, block, attack, and all that very deliberately, or you're going to get your ass handed to you. And it's just so damn fun.

And it's just so damn fun.

Yeah what made my day with cloud was when you open up omnislash 5 i think it is? or 7? that chains off of your aerial regular height 2-3 hit brave chain going into an omnislash hp attack...that and finishing touch...just sold sold sold me on cloud! I'm hoping the other characters are the same way and open up.

One tiny bit of disappointment for me is that when you hit level 100 max xp you still can't really enable all of the extra basic skills without sacrifice the basics that you absolutely must have.

Tried omni-dash for a while...that didn't work out too well but it was nice for speedy get behind the enemy dashing. All in all though I stuck with speed+, jump+, increased evasion time. It would be nice to pick up first strike/counter-attack/sneak attack but...i just cannot live without my basics.

Man, you've played a lot more than me. I've just done main storyline stuff, only getting each character to 11-12 or so, enough to finish that story arch.

Yeah I'm playing it Gorvi style until I get a chance to finish story mode with everyone once, then I'm going to go back and work on my faves to make them even more powerful and see just how far you can take them. With so many games in the pipe and racing game avalanche starting TODAY and ending ehenever Forza comes out (or GT5 if the rumor that it may see a holiday release are true), leveling characters up to 100 just seems like such a daunting task for now.

Loving it though... such a great game.

well i went through the story for each initially and then that unlocks the red card stories. I went into that thinking it'd continue with the difficulty comfortable with my character's level after completing their own stories(not the case). So what I did was go back and went through their stories a second time on each character so they are all at a level 30 or so(and to pick up the rare chests/summons/rare battle pieces). Went into the red card story with cloud and got pummeled on the 3rd or 4rth story so I went back and did the first 2 or 3 red card stories. Finished off the red card story arch and it opened up the next two. It almost feels like a waste playing as cloud as level 100 when the difficulty level for the extra two story modes is based on level 30's so now I'm working up bartz or cecil, i'm not sure. I opened up the PP catalogue for xp bonus/gil bonus/pp bonus and played heavy on my bonus day(sunday).

Probably going to mess around with the consumable PP's that add to battle regen/items next to make the sets I want.

The Emperor is an asshole, that is all. What are you talking about? He's a cinch!

Firion, esp. a Firion over level 20, is a monster. I still use his rope knife more than anything but if you can land that, you're almost assured a Break and then it's just a matter of hitting someone with your arrow and it's all over.

I just want to unlock a good close-in HP attack since the arrow attack is kind of flakey.

I wish the game had built-in infrastructure combat so I could fight some of you guys.
