I am looking at getting back into TF2 but the only computer I have access to play it on is lacking in terms of power.

If anyone has suggestions to make TF2 run better on underpowered systems I would be glad to hear them.

The two things that are most important to me are running at a decent fps and running it at my laptops native resolution (1280x800).

Native resolution might be tough.

But you can drop it to Dx8.1 and that can probably help you out, otherwise there are some configs out there that you can download to help max out your fps.

I had to set my tf2 to direct X 8 when it launched otherwise the performance was terrible. Use "-dxlevel 80" in the launch options for tf2. Interestingly enough, the lack of some effects makes tf2 easier to play visually such as the ability to see through water well.

Low-res, no-AA, no after effects. Then stay far away from a Pyro named African Eleviolent and you'll be fine.

I have set it to start with dx 8.0 and adjusted the in game option, but when I went to test it no one was playing tf2. I may wait till there is a good game going to test it.

You should test it on a random server so that if any tweaking is required, you'll be ready for our nights.

Early test show that I should be good to go, will have to see what a full server will do.

I used to use SourceTV servers to test performance when I had a laptop that struggled with TF2.

I figured there was some way to see through water better, the way I got killed at times. This, to me, is the seedy underbelly of online FPS games. First ran into it with RtCW, where people were turning off lighting and shadows so every opponent stood out like a neon sign. Never liked it, never will.

I remember back in my TFC days, people would put custom textures for maps to make it a lot easier to different things too.

That's why there is sv_pure in Source games. No pink head models for you.
