Just picked this up at Thinkgeek:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/images/products/zoom/a7ea_sata_dual_drive-dock.jpg (http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/usb-gadgets/a7ea/)

Allows me to hotswap leftover SATA drives and use them for external backup. Because of the number of rebuilds I've done in the past few years, I have quite a few serviceable HDDs lying around just looking for a purpose. This is perfect!

I saw these for sale at CompUSA. Please let us know how it is after you've used it for a while. Does it use a USB or eSATA connection?

Click on the picture, takes you to the ThinkGeek product page:

...mounts as an available volume on your Windows, Mac OS, or Linux computer via either a USB or an eSATA connector.

I might get my office to pick up a dual-bay version of this, pretty sexy considering how many SATA drives we shuffle around.

And it comes with the SATA to eSATA bracket, eSATA cable, USB cable, and power cable. I had it up and running via eSATA within 10 minutes. I've backed up all my personal files to an old 320GB drive, and so far it's worked like a charm.

I'll post more as I use it more. I may try it out in USB mode on my wife's computer and see how it does.

Damn, my friend was speaking about this. He's getting one. Now I think I will.

I came here expecting PC-Nutz. I'm disappointed.

I'd love to know how these work for you in the long run (How hot do the drives get anyway? I know they're out in the open, but there's no fan circulating any air...do they still get rather hot?)...I've got a few HDDs laying around, but I've got IDE as well as SATA.

I've toyed with the idea of grabbing a Drobo in the near future, myself.

Instead, if you've got an older PC hanging out, might I recommend using FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/). It is incredibly useful and has support of all kinds.

For those interested, http://www.1saleaday.com/ has one today (8/19) for $20. I can't speak for the brand (Arkview) but it's pretty interesting but a bit ugly.

If this handled IDE drives as well, I would buy one right now. I have several older IDE drives from old builds sitting around that I want to get data off of, but am too lazy to actually hook them up to a PC. this would be ideal.

As for the heat, I would not worry too much. My crappy external HDD enclosure I bought has zero cooling. It does get hot, but it does not seem to affect the drive...yet, anyhow. :)

Yeah, I know it's probably a ridiculous fear, but it's still good to hear they don't get too hot like that.

I'm gonna order something like this today. I'm selling my desktop to family and getting a laptop, but I'm just going to swap out the desktop drive with one I just bought, and keep the old one. The laptop has an eSATA port, so this would be perfect for accessing my old files.

Oh, I almost forgot, I also ordered this:

So if the drive dock stops working, I can always set it on fire with 3000C flames. :)

Love them. I have 2 bases with 2 slots each for SATA and old ATA.
GREAT idea and I just adore them.

Just used it to reinstall my personal folders after replacing W7 RC with the release-to-manufacturing copy. Went smooth as silk. Awesome!

Got mine, and now my old desktop hard drive is sitting comfortably in it, feeding my new laptop. Good times.
