Okay, I have been thinking about this for a while, but haven't been able to find any answers on the great altar of Google.
When I stream videos from the PC to the PS3, I browse through my "PC" on the PS3. I usually scroll past "Genre, Series, Playlists" and just go with "Folder" and then manually browse to the video I want to play following the directory layout on my PC.
Now, I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with the "Series" tag for videos? I can't seem to find that tag or find a program on my pc to tag a video file as part of a series.
Or is this just a function of the PSN Store where you can download tv shows (that I can't while living in Canada).

More than likely that "Series" is a function of the PC program you use to stream to the PS3. Meaning that the PS3 doesn't decide which files are in the same series but the PC program does it. Thus, it depends on the program as to how it figures out which files are of the same series (i.e. tagging, folder location, etc.).
I use Twonky and I can edit the folders that I see on the PS3 so that I don't have a "Series" folder.

Nice. It wasn't necessarily that I wanted to use "series", I would rather just remove the excess crap that I have to dig down through. I'll check out this Twonky program.

OR better yet, is there a more simple way to organize by year, genre, artist etc for music? I'm doing mine the looong way through WMP.

Note that Twonky (http://www.twonkyvision.de/) is a commercial product. Its the best I've found for my needs, but you do have to pay for it.

I haven't used WMP as my media server for awhile now, but if I remember correctly, you can't alter the folders that will show up on your PS3 when you use it.
I don't trust that I have all the tags correct in my music library so I never have any of the year, genre, etc. type sortings show up in my folders. I tend to just rely on Artist and Artist/Album.

Well, sometimes you have to pay if it works, right?

I use folders for the specific types of videos (music videos, game videos/trailers, movie trailers), and albums for music. Pictures are organized by when they were downloaded.
I could never get WMP to share media right, as I also share certain folders over my network.

Another DLNA media server that I tried (and is free) was SimpleCenter (http://www.simplecenter.com/). I don't remember why I didn't stick with it, but it might have been because it didn't/doesn't transcode videos. That may not be true now.

TVersity. Free with real time transcoding. Great for all your anime.

This is what I use. It allowed me to play a couple of files the PS3 did not support. However, I do also just use the "Folders" options for brpwsing media.

yes but the menu is very customisable and you can tag folders and files.

When I originally looked at TVersity the issues I had were:
- All transcoding rendered the video at standard def regardless of the definition of the original video
- I couldn't FFWD or RWD while watching a transcoding video
- No linux support
But that was a couple of years ago.

In settings, the max resolution for transcoded video is 400x300 default. Change it and it'll work.
