This one touches me as I was living in Scotland the day the original PlayStation was released on September 29, 1995. I remember fondly the excitement I felt as I tubed it to HMV in Glasgow on my lunch break to pick up the PlayStation on the day of release... I also picked up Ridge Racer, Battle Arena Toshinden and Wipeout...

I remember getting back to work and feeling so excited. The only other day that eclipses that in terms of excitement was my wedding day.

Anyway, The Electronic Waste Company, based in Redruth, Cornwall (UK), has signed contracts with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe to shred and dispose of the plastic cases of the consoles for Sony operations in the whole of Europe.

The deal covers the processing of an estimated 250 tonnes, or 300,000 cases in the first year alone.

Ah, the memories... Truly the end of an era. :doffs cap:

It doesn't seem too long ago when the PS1 was the new badass system in town...but it was. I'm just glad I was sensible enough to save all my PS1 games, there are a lot of classics in there.

I think I was one of the few that never had a PS1. I had a gap between the Saturn and the XBox 1 in my life. A gap later plugged with a Dreamcast from eBay ;)

I keep thinking I should go back to the PS1 library and play some of the top games that I missed out on...but I just can't (graphics whore that I am).

Actually, here's an okay (yah, it's Gamespy) list of the top 25 PS1 games of all time (http://ps2.gamespy.com/articles/649/649048p2.html).

Yeah, that PS1 library was great. I still have all my PS1 games, all ~130 of them.

I'm not sure if I still have 130 or more but I have a hell of a lot of them. Even crap ones and different versions of Madden. Why do I still have it all? No clue. There are some gems in there but to horde PS games like I did back in the day seems kind of retarded considering I got rid of a lot of my Saturn/Dreamcast and other games. :o

I am still collecting old PS1 games. I just got Unholy War last week. I want to add Tail of the Sun and Tecmo's Deception and then my quirky library will be complete.

Then it is off to find Seaman for the Dreamcast.

I was more of a PC player back in the PS1 days, so all I have are JRPGs... Sort of sad.

I sold all the good ones too. (But I have an original copy of Xenogears, so I suppose that's something)

The only title I know I'm missing is FF8. I think I loaned it out and never heard from it again.

Works for me though, I hated that damn game. I bought it release day because I was pumped after the FF7 greatness. "Lets spend hours drawing magic! Fun!" Umm...no.

I've got a list of about 10-15 games I want to make my collection complete. For a while I was on a kick trying to get all the JRPGs that were well looked upon, but I ended up getting rid of some of those. I actually still have two copies (both blackbar) of FFVII, which I recently found out is worth a decent bit on eBay. :)

I've become less and less interested in hoarding games; I rarely go back to them, and when I do, they invariably look like ASS compared to today's games, which makes it very difficult for me to enjoy them visually.

I ought to go rental-only, really...makes better sense for the way I game.

I know some people feel this way, I'm almost exactly the opposite. I love the way old games look, I just get all nostalgic with them. I don't have the time right now that I used to to go back and play old games, but that'll change as time goes on and the kids get older. :)

I never had a Playstation when the console was actually viable. I have one now that I picked up cheap, but I've never used it. I've always meant to go back and play some of the games I missed out on, but I never have the time. Still, I played a lot of Playstation at friend's houses, and I'll always fondly remember the system.

Hopefully these are actually being recycled. Any word on that? I know the title says so, but disposing and recycling are definitely not the same thing. :p

Yeah, they're being recycled into things like cling film, plastic cups, etc.

Reading about fits' excitement for the PS reminds me of my excitement for the Dreamcast (and later the 360).

Those are the only two consoles I've bought on launch. It takes a lot of excitement for me to wait in line to pay money. And I didn't regret either purchase.

The excitement for the PS1 and it's launch kept me buying almost all the future consoles at launch. I only stopped that streak at the PS3...I just couldn't afford that puppy...but tracking down day one Nintendo64, going to Toys R us for my Dreamcast...waiting three months for my PS2 there were such shortages of it from Gamestop online...I pre-ordered the damn thing in August and didn't come till December...waiting online at 4am to pre-order my Xbox 360...same for my Nintendo Wii (i'm insane on that last one...but I have issues about consoles at launch, ok)...see what you did Sony...you started me on a long road of "must have" behavior...and has been well worth it...I loved my original playstation...TR 1 still melts my gamer heart on it...
