Since Halloween is right around the corner, I'd figure we should have a place to post our favorite horror flicks.
One of my personal favorites that came out recently was The Orphanage. Damn, what a good scary movie. And I mean scary, not gore porn.

Insanitarium (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1103984/) was actually a pretty good flick in a cheesy sort of way. It was surprisingly enjoyable for me. Though I went in with VERY low expectations.
So is anyone gonna see Saw 7 or whatever it is up to now? lol.

Whenever a thread like this pops up I always mention The Changeling (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080516/).
It's got George C. Scott, it's very subtle and it has the best Seance scene ever. Eerie shit.

The Orphanage? That was a beautiful movie. Nothing scary about it to me. Just pure beauty.
As for me, I just loaded up my Netflix que with a lot of gore/shock stuff:

I watched it. Found nothing amazing about it. Maybe because I knew too much going in.
28 days later. Only horror movie that matters. Also, I'm thinking about catching up on the Walking Dead.
I dunno if most people would, but I'd class Dead Man's Shoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_mans_shoes) as horror. That film is messed up, and walking home after watching it at a friends was not a fun experience.

I tend to go for cheezefests than straight out horror such as Evil Dead / Army of Darkness, The early Jason and Freddy flicks (and Freddy vs. Jason I did enjoy), and my most recent fave horror? Slither.
"Bitch is hard core!"
Just recently saw Event Horizon for only my 2nd time. The first time I saw it I hated it. I thought of it as a good 1/2 a movie. I enjoyed it much better the 2nd time.
And yes, I'm one of the jerks who never saw The Thing.

Funny that my response to "it's pretty terrifying" is going to be, "that's good to hear!" I mean, 'cause that's the point of a scary movie, right? I have a friend who's kind of a horror aficionado, and he's a big fan of that movie, too. I'll definitely look into it next time I go to the video store. :)

Oh, man. Slither was surprisingly enjoyable. I thought the entire movie was going to be like tentacle porn or something, but it totally wasn't. The funny thing is that the first time I watched it was at my favorite bar. One of the owners/bartenders is a cult horror fan, so they show horror movies every day (two different movies on two different TVs).

I guess the reason why the Orphanage was so scary to me was because it was the first non gore porn horror flick in a while and the first time you see it, you're so tensed up and ready for the cliche' loud noise scares.
I too have heard that REC is good. Can anyone say if Quarantine is a decent remake of it?
28 Days and Weeks were amazing. Best zombie movies ever and I'm eagerly anticipating number three.

Wow, that's pretty cool. It's good to know there are others around here with taste in movies as fantastic as mine. ;)
I haven't seen The Devil's Backbone, but I've heard of it, and I enjoy Guillermo del Toro, so I have no doubt that I'd like it. I haven't seen Mother of Tears yet either, and I was excited about it for awhile, but I just haven't been motivated to see it lately. I actually haven't watched any of Dario Argento's recent movies (though I thought it was really cool that he's doing a voice in the Italian Dead Space). Tell me what you think of it once you do see it!
Regarding all the Shaun of the Dead comments... that's actually one of my favorite movies (along with Hot Fuzz), but I didn't mention it because I didn't really consider it a "scary" movie. Even though it kind of is, sort of.

The kid got infected and was a carrier of the disease. Use your imagination. He could've sneezed on someone, kissed someone, or something along those lines.
I enjoyed Weeks a great deal simply because it was such a good refinement on the way we Americans do zombie movies. Was it as innovative as the original? No, but it was still a helluva ride.

I'm gonna go just gonna go fuse my face to my palm.See, for me zombie movies (and lots of good horror movies, hell, lots of good movies period,) are all about having a small group of people facing a threat so much greater than them that they have virtually no way of winning. And despite their only chance being to stick together, people invariably turn on each other. (That was wonderfully compounded in The Thing, given the alien's ability to look like anyone.) So, more or less, The Thing was made with me in mind. (Despite my being one year old when it was released. :D

All of the talk of premonitions of disaster in the Mysterious Happenings thread reminded me of this movie: The Medusa Touch. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077921/)
It's from '78, but it is a great psychological thriller about a guy who can cause things (usually very bad things) to happen with his mind. It's got some really spooky scenes in it.

Without 'the whole movie' in front of it, the monster horror at the end is worthless. Takes all the impact out of it if you don't see what he's been through and what he's lost.

Yep, I was gonna say something similar. The beginning of the movie makes it. You see how he's just this normal guy, with an anything but normal hobby. Then he goes through hell just to reach the ultimate end. It's funny, because the first time I watched the movie, I got seriously sad and almost shed a tear at the end.

Strangely, my mother started me on horror movies before I was even in school*, so I don’t scare easy in that regard. However, when I was younger, there was at least one movie that used to scare me: Split Second. Anyone else seen it? I’m not sure it would bother me today, but back then there was a scene when one dude gets pulled under the water that used to haunt my dreams.

*I think it was a bit of an experiment, actually; she didn’t do this with my older brother, and he’s now the kind of person has to have the closet either open all the way or tightly closed, and can’t sleep with the light off.
EDIT: Okay, I found the trailer (and added it) and now I'm fairly sure it wouldn't bother me today. Strange the things that affect us in our youth, no?

One word: JAWS
Jaws is the reason I'm still affraid of the ocean. I'm 24, live in SoCal by the beach, and I'm scared to go in the water because of a movie made almost 10 years before I was born. Hell, I was even nervious to go swimming in a pool alone for a few years. It took me convincing myself that a shark would die in our chlorinated pool before I'd jump in.
While I've gotten over the shark obsession, I'm still nervious every time sea weed brushes my feet in the water.

I know this will likely get me mocked *coughWasson_cough*
but just like the little vid he linked, Arachnophobia terrifies me... Oddly enough, I'd almost consider holding that movie up to how entertainment media CAN affect the youth. I don't remember having a fear of spiders as a kid, and in fact remember picking up daddy long leggers with my grandfather and tossing them around the yard and at each other. Then I saw that movie. Now I can't even look at a daddy long legger without thinking "Kill", and unfortunately, my reaction tends to lean towards "wimper and cower" the bigger and hairier the spider is.
For gods sake, I get the heebie jeebies watching Potter 2.

It's a great 50's sci-fi/horror flick, with some great lines, in classic snappy 50's dialogue.

Any fan's of Cronenberg's Videodrome... and does that even count as horror? I mean, there's not really a boogeyman (or "guy in a suit") to speak of; but Cronenberg just makes some really fuckin' weird movies. You know?
Also, and I can already see Rini crackin' on me for not using the multi-quote dealio, but how about Nightbreed, Hellraiser and Carpenter's Halloween (which is still my favorite "scary" movie)?

Haha, no worries about the multiquote. I just think it's really cool!
Anyway, I thought Videodrome was a great, creepy movie (but I think you're right that it doesn't really fall under the genre of "horror"). There's a long list of Cronenberg movies I still need to see.
