View Full Version : G.I. Joe Movie

Just got back from it and enjoyed it, despite being a big critic of Sommers for everything after The Mummy. It felt like what G.I. Joe should be. They focused more on the tech than characters, which is fine because they pulled it off. I would even watch it again tonight if someone asks me to join them.

They did a good job with the origin stories considering the cartoon and two different comic story lines were bizarre. I don't want to spoil too much, but if you're a G.I. Joe fan, I'm sure you'll like it.

IS it as stupid as it looks from the trailers? If it is, than I'm in whenever this releases here.

I wanted to go see this when it was announced and then after I saw the first trailer. Lately the tv spots have been over played and is accompanied by Kid Rock's American Badass theme song. Plus when the studio refuses to screen it for the press you know something is wrong.

I may still check it out but i'm going to go in expecting nothing.

That song really turns me off of the movie. I was talking to my cousin over the weekend (a G.I. Joe fan) as it came on, and I just said, "Really? Do they have to use that song for the trailer?" He just shook his head and sighed.

I still think the movie will probably be okay.

No, but it's another tech that represents how G.I. Joe is. It doesn't define the movie though.

I only put up with Transformers because of the general premise. Seeing a helicopter transform into a giant robot with seemingly no mass created or lost was awesome, regardless of the script quality. GI Joe will not have any of those moments methinks.

Well, I think Ninja fighting is as awesome as a robot transformation. And laser beams. And giant underwater sea battles around an underwater hideout shooting laser beams.

The point of the movie while in development was to avoid this.

I made a thread about this and I was actually being made fun of when, in the end, I was right.

After seeing the lastest round of commercials, I can safely say that what started as a movie that looked like stupid, summer fun back in the Super Bowl teaser era now looks like it requires ticket holders to be wearing denim shorts and some other article of clothing earned by redeeming Marlboro Miles or Camel Cash in order to gain entry.

America, what the fuck?

this really can't be worse than Transformers 2 (have no desire to watch that at all. ever.) so it can't be all that bad. I'd go see it too for Baroness. and snake-eyes/stormshadow battles.

Despite the usage of that Kid Rock song it doesn't sound like the movie is "America, Fuck Yeah!" The Joe organization is multi-national in the movie to help sell it to the international crowds. Maybe in Europe the trailer plays with an appropriate Fuck Yeah song for the given country.

Got back from seeing it, no where near as "AMERICAN BADASS" as the trailers implied and as the original cartoons had done. Fun action movie with a rudimentary plot that focuses to keep the action going. Tighter focus compared to the slow as molasses Transformers 2, but without the final 30 minutes of pure military porn (comparatively speaking, plenty of military stuff though).

I was initially skeptical of the Crysis suits, but that sequence reminded me more of the chase in Metal Gear Solid 4 except that the ones jumping around are the good guys. I was also skeptical of Marlon Wayans, but he wasn't nearly annoying as I thought he would have been.
Rachel Nichols and Sienna Miller were hot, EXTREMELY HOT.

I liked it, but I'm no one to judge by, to be honest. There was a whole lot of action, and the CG wasn't top of the class but still pretty good. It was maybe a little too long, but still very enjoyable.

just saw it this afternoon. i went in expecting nothing and i found it surprisingly entertaining. this will never win any awards but it was pure popcorn entertainment. I can see now why the studio didn't screen it for critics. for once i'm glad to have seen a movie without their influence.

i recommend it, just don't expect it to be like the cartoons. Its essentially an Origins movie.

EDIT - and i take back what i said before - Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a good job. And thankfully Brendan Fraser's role only consisted of a few grunts (i hate that guy).

Oh, yeah, I was going to say that I enjoyed this more than Transformers 2, which I liked. It might be as simple as I could easily follow what was going on. Anyway, it was also more violent than I was expecting. Bloodless, yes, but Sommers still got not one but two close-up exploding heads in a PG-13 movie. Impresive.

im glad i saw this. It didnt make me feel like someone raped my childhood. I had very low expectations after the transformers movies.....
I had 3 expectations:

1) some monuments getting blown up
2) cobra vs joe
3) a PSA

2 out of 3 made it enjoyable. it was intresting watching how they incorporated diffrent aspects from the different source materials. comics, tv show, and info from the toys file cards

I'm kind of torn about this movie. It's very obvious to me that the film was meant for little kids and aped the original cartoon series. The implausible plot, goofy action scenes, consequenceless violence, and over-the-top military hardware and hidden installations perfectly captured the feel of the 80's saturday morning TV show.

Stuff like "why do the bad guys need to steal nanite warheads when they have 0-mass flight platforms and an underwater base filled with vehicles and soldiers?" or "how do the GI Joe detainment areas work when it seemingly consists of a small circular room supended in an energy field with no hygiene or sleep facilities?" are questions that are entriely forgivable in a kids cartoon.

So either the movie is trying to mimic the kids cartoon or it's a wildly illogical film for adults. I'll be charitable and go with the former.

Where it fell flat for me was the clumsy attempt to appeal to a general teen/adult audience by inserting curse words and tossing a lame romantic subplot into the mix. Don't try to appeal to adults! Just don't.

I'm going to see it, but I'll be taking my 'Michael Bay head' with me.

I expect to see lots of things exploding, cool over the top tech and fight scenes.

Anyone here going to see this and expecting a deep emotional thought provoking storyline is likely to be disappointed.

I went on Saturday night and checked it out. It was incredibly corny (almost painfully so at times) and extremely far fetched. However, I enjoyed it. It didn't try to take itself too seriously and it ended up working. I felt the cast did a good job with what they had to work with. They were a very likable lot (even Marlon Wayans). The plot was, for the most part, inconsequential and served as an excuse to drive the action but there were a few fun twists and I liked the way they gave closure at the ending but left it up in the air for an inevitable sequel. The CG looks awful in some shots but it's brilliantly done in others (Crysis suit scene). Overall, I say go, turn your brain off, and enjoy the ride. I liked this movie a lot more than Transformers 2 (which I didn't care for). Mainly due to the fact that the pointless trash humor is mostly absent. No leg humping, pointless objectification of women, or metal testicles here, thanks.

I'm going to see this tomorrow night. I've been debating as the preview made it seem bad, really bad. This was confirmed by a two word text from a friend who saw it Friday night as he exited the theater: Donkey dick.

Still, I can't seem to stay away from this kind of movie. The missus is visiting her sister for a few days and our local theater has all movies for $6 on Tuesdays, so I'm considering it a "bachelor night".

I enjoyed it, and yeah I enjoyed it more than Transformers 2.

I have no idea of any of the GI Joe storyline, hell I thought the main guy WAS GI Joe, so naturally I giggled like a schoolgirl when the commander kept refering to everyone as Joes.

"We've got a lot of Joe's out there!" I have no idea why I just found it funny.

#Edit: Pressed post too early.

Anyway, I enjoyed the film, I doubt I'd watch it again unless it was on TV one evening. Good action packed fun with over the top weapons and action.

I think the only thing that got me was Moscow to Washington that fast... yeah right, but then ultra unrealistic movie, so no bad.

No, the dude basically thanked his fans by calling them stupid. The reason it wasn't screened for critics is because the studio had no faith in this. And critics do love dark and depressing movies like Star Trek. and Ratatouille. and Slumdog Millionaire. and The Incredibles. I really wanted to see this for the hilarity of it. But according to the film maker, I'd be stupid to do so.

Just watched it. It is what it is. Passable fare and not particularly childhood rapey though my biggest gripe is with the Snake Eyes mouth. Yes we've its been forewarned and all but its still distracting to see. That and skin tight upper armor does not go with cargo pants.

I got tricked into seeing it. As my "friends" dragged me into the theatre by my legs, my nails scraping the floor and me screaming, they told me "It's just a movie, you'll still have the comics."

They were sort of right.

The movie is a big stupid summer action/adventure flick. The G.I. Joe licence is just tacked on to sell more tickets. I would have preferred a more serious take on the franchise, as Spiderman, Ironman and Batman have been given over the last few years, but anyways: I was entertained somewhat.

Compared to Transformers 2 this movie is a masterpiece. I still feel disrespected and stupid when I think about that robot shit fest.

Oh, and by the way. Imagine the cross-over potential between Transformers and G.I. Joe. They have done it in the comics quite a few times. It even worked in a couple of them. An eventual movie won't be like the comic though, that would be too rough on the average moviegoer. Because what was the first thing that happened in the comic? The Joes shot Bumblebee to fucking pieces, that's what.

Anywho, I still have the comics, and the new run is quite good so far.

I really wanted the soldier from Transformers 1 to be one of the GI Joe characters. Or named Steve Rogers.

Some of the earliest comics I ever read when I was young was a Transformers/Joes crossover (Megatron allies with Cobra and finds the Ark! GASP!), and it was badass. The ninjas were awesome, Snake Eyes earned my 'most badass ninja ever' award, etc, etc. That's why I want to see this one.

Just got back from seeing this after some delay...have to admit, I was entertained. Certainly not good, by any stretch of the imagination, but entertaining. Of course the dialogue was so bad it was its own level of preposterous, but there were enough explosions and cool toys to keep me from being bored. And I only paid $6 for it (half price), so I felt like I got my money's worth. I would have punched myself in the dick if I had paid full price.
