Anyone play or follow the game?

ESPN is currently running footage from the 2009 WSOP held a few weeks back and I've really been looking forward to it for a while. To catch up and get familiar, I've been watching a lot of 08, 07, 06, 05 WSOP events on ESPN2 and ESPN Classic...or where ever the hell I can get my poker fix.

I haven't really found a place online to play - not yet ready to make that commitment, I guess. Texas Hold'em on the 360 was great for a while, until everyone started going ALL IN on the first hand.

Anyway, I'm just looking for other like minds out there who enjoy the game.

I love poker. There are hold'em tournaments at a local bar (that my dad bartends at) that I play in occasionally. During the winter I have tournaments at my house with a bunch of friends. I don't really play online but my roomie does and he plays at Full Tilt.

Unfortunately, I think all that shit is illegal out here. At least the hold'em tournaments.

I remember doing some ads for a place here that was offering them about 5 years ago, but I haven't heard of any since.

We play a few games here at the office sometimes after hours. Small games; $20 buy-in usually. But that's usually once every few weeks. Which sucks, cause as much as I love the game and watch the game, I really like to play it. It's like practice for me, but I can't find a place to play.

I used to play a weekly game with friends, but that kind of trailed off, and none of us really hang out any more :( It was a lot of fun, though.

I used to play a shit ton with friends. But its enjoyment has worn off pretty severly. In a weird way I think its Poker burnout. In addition we have a couple groups here that have some....unique timing for winning and losing and trips they are taking. One guy just called a big game together to "teach people" and then posted to his facebook how he basically stole all his co-workers money to take a trip.

Ah, well that will put a damper on your poker playing. Are there any casinos near by? I know at the reservation casinos locally they have tournaments. My buddy enters them pretty regularly and has a good time.

The reservation casinos here are all video poker. Nothing with actual people sitting at a table playing.

Women poker players totally fuck up my game. I don't know what it is. Almost every single time I am up against a woman she just destroys me. I just cannot read women at all. AT POKER. Ah fuck. Ok, I can't really read the girlfriend either. Shit I just learned something about myself.

Man that sucks. Well if you ever want to come up to MN we will get you in a real game of poker. You'll have to play with a bunch of Yanks, but I don't think Minnesotans count. We're just too fucking nice.

I was totally thinking about that, although I don't know when we'd find time to play. I can bring my chip set though and we could just have a game in someone's room probably.

Hmm, how many people would be down for this?

I don't play nearly as much as I used to, but I use PokerStars and play mostly with play money and have done some money games as well. I have entertained the idea every year of attempting to get into the WSOP through it, but setting aside multiple hours in order to play and possibly win it is hard.

I have played a little at the casinos around here like Total has. It's a different dynamic than you see on the World Poker Tour or WSOP on TV. People play loose way too much and it can really screw you. Same thing goes for blackjack when you have newbies that just don't understand when to hit or stay.

Outside of that, every time I play with my wife's family I usually clean up except last year at the family reunion (coming up in a week here again) cabin.

After taking a break from playing, i've recently gotten the bug again after following some of this year's WSOP coverage. I'm actually really disappointed with ESPN's coverage, I liked how they used to show a few non-holdem events over the last few years, but this year they aren't even going to cover the $50,000 HORSE event, arguably one of the most prestigious events they hold. So, I was following some of the later events online, even getting to watch some of the final tables live, and that got me back into playing a bit. (I tend to enjoy watching the live coverage... sure, you don't get to see the hole cards, but you often get to see a player's strategy unfold much better in live play, as opposed to the heavily edited TV coverage where they only show a few big hands).

As for where I play, there is the occasional game with friends or bar league, but it's mostly on Pokerstars these days. I really like Full Tilt, but Pokerstars actually seeded my account with $5 last year after I played in a couple of freerolls with them. So now i'm trying to see how far I can build up my modest bankroll from there through freerolls and micro-limit ring games. So far, i've managed to build my $5 up to just under $50 with a couple of cashes in freeroll tournaments (best placement was 17th out of about 1800 people in a HORSE tournament) and grinding it out in .02/.04 limit games. I won't get rich from it, but I'm enjoying the process of seeing how far I can take things. And hell, it's free money anyway, so even if I wind up busting out, I don't really lose anything.

I love poker! That being said, I haven't sat down at a poker table in over 8 months, possibly even longer. I stopped playing after I got into my program. Since it was one-year program and expensive as all hell, I decided to chill out on the poker games. Granted I'm not a horrible enough player to be an overall loser at the game, the swings would be too much for what I needed to do, which was maintain a strict budget.

Now that I've finished the program, I'll be looking to get back into the swing of things. I used to play online, but I much prefer home games or the casino. I just like the f2f aspect of it all. Then again, I picked up a gf over the last year as well, so that means she'll demand time from me. I'll probably be able to convince her to let me play if I say that I'll spend my winnings to buy her shoes =P

My brother is obsessed and watches Rounders with Ed Norton and Matt Damon like 5 times a week.

ESPN made mention of their WSOP coverage. This week and next are like...novelty tables. This week was the champions table. A bunch of bracelet winners all playing for a pretty nice corvette.

Next week is a celebrity charity tourny. And then on the 18, full coverage of the WSOP begins - 2 hours, every Tuesday night.

I used to have a weekly game back when I lived in Maryland. Thought I got pretty good, and almost always left with significantly more money then I came in with. Then, I moved to CA, and realized I'm not actually good, just good at playing against my old friends in MD.

Yeah, I'm really disappointed in that. They show the first event, the last event, and 2 novelty events. They gave away 56 bracelets over the course of the WSOP, which included some incredible runs (Phil Ivey was really hot this year, I'd like to see him continue that in November). The $50K HORSE final table ran for a record-setting 19+ hours, and it might get a breif mention before a commercial bump (I was hoping that Huck Seed was going to hang in longer on that one). Hell, even with the main event, that final table will probably run for 2 days, 12+ hours if last year is any indication, and we'll see a 2-hour highlight reel. Last year's coverage of the WSOP actually took away from a lot of my enthusiasm for watching TV poker.

I actually paid for the two PPV final tables they did a couple of years ago. I had a few friends over, grabbed some pizza, and watched Alex Kravchenco abuse the poor bastard to his left for the first two hours of play. Wouldn't let him into a pot without risking his whole stack. It was pretty brutal, but ESPN's coverage didn't show any of it, or the way Yang really had his opponents playing so cautious. ESPN sucks... heh

Good news!! I hope: Texas Hold 'em Poker was released on Xbox Live Arcade at the end of summer 2006, but we are here to tell you that TikGames is going to be releasing a new 10-player (any combination of live and AI players), avatar-based Texas Hold ‘em for Xbox 360!

It will be distributed through the Indie Game area of the Xbox Live Marketplace, residing in parallel with the existing Texas Hold ‘em on XBLA. The game has a ton of awesome stats, based on feedback and input from real online poker players. The game will also feature lots of customizable game types and tourneys.

It looks nicer, but if the rooms are populated with the same asshats the game won't be any better. If it's all still Hold'em, I wonder what kind of customizable gametypes they'll really have. Just different blinds and buy-ins?

I agree on the asshats, but it might revive things around here and maybe get a poker night going with people from CoG. Plus, I hope they give mod status to those who create rooms. That'll help in clearing out the asshats some.

I'd be down for the occasional CoG poker night. I just got burnt out on some of the people who you'd find on XBL.

Of course, I got the original XBL poker when they gve it away for free, for the cost of the new game will be a big factor in my interest.

I'm wondering that myself...the cost, that is.

Then again, it being the only poker game in the market, I don't know that I'll complain too much.

Well, there are a ton of clients to play online on the PC side, even with Play Money... Hell, I was in a Pokerstars Freeroll earlier today. Just sayin'.
