View Full Version : 5th Annual Kamalot LAN Party

JayVe
10-13-2008, 05:12 PM
Ladies and gentlemen

I cordially invite you to JayVe's 5th annual Kamalot LAN Party in the charming ville of Silver Spring (http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=silver+spring+maryland&ll=39.027719,-77.036133&spn=26.501908,39.550781&z=5&iwloc=addr) nestled in the picturesque country of Merry-Land on November 15th and 16th. Visit Casa de Kamalot for an evening of frivolity, music, games of chance, and headshots.

Lighter fare and family-friendly gaming occurs in the early hours. Once the wee hours strike, the gaming shifts to a more... dangerous affair. Last year was a huge success being the first console-only event. Since there is no sleep for the wicked, tradition holds that we break fast together at a local establishment while slaughtering each other in portable games and generally causing a scene.

Let me know if you'd be interested in attending. Space is limited, and it is first-come first-serve. Last year we provided food, and can probably do so again. Bring your games / systems of choice and a non-alcoholic beverages to share.

Games On Tap:

Halo 3 (360)
Super Smash Bros: Brawl (Wii)
WipEout HD (PS3)
Mario Kart (Wii)
Left 4 Dead (360 Demo)
Castle Crashers
Rock Band (360)
Soul Calibur II (360)

Updated list of DS games people will be playing:
Civilization Revolution
Tetris DS
Mario Kart DS
Worms Open Warfare 2

Feel free to bring other multiplayer titles, especially those that can be played with a single cart.

DREAMCAST
The Dreamcast has been hooked up. Below are the list of games we'll have available to play:

Powerstone
Soul Calibur
Project Justice
Heavy Metal Geomatrix
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Virtua Tennis

While the final game list has yet to be decided, there will likely big a lot of Halo being played after midnight. Maybe we can all hook up online together!

Send me a friend invite, and plan to chat it up on the 15th of November.

Absolutely!

Just to note, attendees may need to bring a display. I've got a projector (720p) and a 42" LCD (1080p) that will already be in use. Freely available are a 21" CRT (VGA) and a 19" CTR (VGA) that will be free. I also have a component>VGA converter in case you don't have a VGA cable. Someone else is bringing another 42" LCD (1080p) and a 21" wide screen LCD monitor (DVI/VGA).

Last year a bunch of people brought original Xboxes too for an OutRun LAN race which was a blast. I managed to buy a bunch of cheap copies of the title used. They run on the 360 through backwards compatibility, and can network with the original Xbox. I'm open for suggestions of affordable but fun titles, especially those that can let multiple people play from a single system like Halo.

Open for suggestions, especially for older games that can be picked up cheap that work well in a team environment. I'm thinking Shadowrun and Lost Planet may be really fun in a LAN and can be found used for very little.

Indeed! Man, I was supposed to post those pix but for some reason I can't find that SD card.

What games will you guys be playing online?

Depends on how it goes next weekend. Honestly, the crowd kind of drives these things. We'll be playing Mario Kart here, in a light-hearted tournament, but there may be people who wish to keep playing after the 'official' tournament ends. So we can play that online.

Once 1:00AM or so hits, we usually switch over to playing something like Halo, where multiple people can share a 360. This year, we'll be trying out the 360 version of Left 4 Dead. If that's a hit, we could end up playing it all night.

I'll keep the thread open and post our progress so anyone wanting to join in from home can do so with the necessary gamer tags and friend codes.

Well, Left 4 Dead is SUPPOSED to be released to Xbox Live BEFORE the party. If it isn't released, we'll find something else to do. A number of people are excited because Left 4 Dead seems like the perfect LAN party game, with two teams of 4 shouting at each other across the house.

We used to do PC gaming at these events, but it got too cumbersome. My place is fairly small, and having everyone show up with a full PC tower, and giant monitor (most were CRTs too!) simply took up too much room. Atop that, the electricity draw would cause pop the breaker, and we would spend more than half the night just setting up.

Last year we made the switch to a console-only affair and we all got in a lot more gaming.

Feel bring anything you want to share/show. Have some fun niche titles others may enjoy? Anything that you think would be fun with more people? Like making any particular food dishes?

There is always enough to do for people who just show up, but the event is really driven by the enthusiasm of those who participate. Don't feel obligated to bring anything, but you are welcome to.

Ya know, that sounds great. We can always use screens, controllers and batteries. Put your name on everything though. It makes it a bit easier to pack up when we are bleary-eyed on Sunday morning.

Here's the current plan for screens:

1 78" LCD Projector
2 42" 1080p LCD monitors
1 22" LCD monitor
Misc CRTs of various sizes & shapes

Here's other things we've got:

1 PS3 (mine)
2 controllers
3 Xbox 360s
8 controllers
3 Wiis
6 controllers
Rock Band Drums / Microphone (360)
Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar (360)

Alright, Bandit, will you be bringing your Xbox? I could bring mine but I don't wanna leave my little brother game-less and he doesn't want to come to Kam's house.

And JayVe, can I bring a friend? She's pretty good at the Unreal and Halo games. Which reminds me, are we gonna playing any Unreal games at all? I don't think those are very popular 'round these parts.

Ladies and gents:

This year's KamaCon is officially out of control. :D

When I started inviting people, it looked like nobody was able to make it. Now, I've got so many people coming I'm not sure what to expect. Kinda feel like I've got the tiger by the tail. It should be a blast, but maybe crowded!

For those that are attending, can you post here what you'll be bring in terms of games/systems/food/drink, along with what times you'll be coming/going? Trying to get a handle on the menu for the evening.

Anyone have a disco ball they can bring? :D

Sure thing! Bring a friend!

I don't have any copies of Unreal. :(

There's a game store nearby too. If we choose to, we can make a quick run to pick up games.

I'll post what I'm bringing after we figure out who's bringing the Xbox with all the DLC on it.

Thank ye much! Yes, today is my birthday.

Here's a quick origin story of the annual game party. Back in 2004 (http://www.kamalot.com/lanparty2004), a few of my friends asked me what I wanted for my birthday. My response was 'nothing more than to be surrounded by my friends and games'. Hence, the LAN party was born.

It has been a great success ever since. Good people, good games, and lots of smiles.

DC, yes I am bringing my 360. Maybe Because of MS' studid DRM a chunk of the earlier DLC won't work offline (pretty much everything from week 1 up to about the Classic Rock Pack (Blondie, Skynyrd, Police). Pretty much what was there when my 360 red-ringed. I tried deleting/re-downloading but no go. Kam, if I bring a cable can I get her online?

Sure thing. I got space on my router.

In fact, I converted a whole room into a Rock Band concert hall (albeit small). If you have a ton of songs on there, your 360 can take center stage.

Then we're set. I will be bringing:

37" HDTV
1 Xbox 360
Rock Band 2 drums w/ drum throne
Rock Band 2 guitar
Power Stone
Marvel vs. Capcom 2

As far as Rock Band 2 songs go I have ~160 DLC songs, the 20 free bonus songs, the 18 AC/DC tracks, and all of RB1 but for the 3 that didn't get re-licensed. All in all we're looking at 340 songs.

Hell yeah! I don't know how beefy your Metal list is but as long as Boston's there I'll survive. Also, it'd be cool if we could have a mini-RB tourney going on but I don't know how that would work.

So I'll bring something to drink, and I swear ya'll are gonna love it. Every single person who has tried this drink has fallen in love with it but I'm not telling anyone where I get it from.
A GH2 guitar just in case people aren't used to the RB guitars.
2 copies of Unreal Championship 2 for the original Xbox and Unreal Tournament 3 for 360.
Dreamcast controller to wipe the floor with weaklings when we play Project Justice.

I have no idea what else. If you there's anything that you'll need just ask and I'll see what I can do.

Probably not as beefy as you like (I have this things about songs that rape me bloody). Give me 2 metal songs you like and I'll buy them tonight. No At The Gates though, just the preview in the store scares the shit out of me.

Hahaha, most Metal songs are freakin' impossible to play. I wouldn't want you to spend your points on something you later on won't play so don't worry about it. Like I said, as long as there are some Boston songs I'll be happy.

This was a triumph

Almost 30 people participated in the event. Mrs. Kamalot made wonderful food for everyone while wearing a skimpy top, and the cake wasn't a lie. All kinds of gamers arrived. The youngest was 7. The oldest, old enough to be grandmother to some CoG readers.

In lieu of official tournaments this year, the flow of the crowd determined the agenda. Rock Band dominated the evening, and the CoG crew dominated the stage with their electrifying presence and super-powered skills. Rock Bandit IS a total badass on the guitar! :D

Dramatic tension ran high in every game, with Left 4 Dead, Mario Kart, and Halo 3 erupting in clamor and excitement. The Rabbid's appearance convinced everyone that I was a disco dancer somewhere in my ancient past while even the janky Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 for Wii provided some joy and pain when played online.

Thanks to everyone who came and shared their time and resources. I hope everyone had as much of a good time as I did. All of you are what makes the party a Huge Success.

That's my "why is this game so fuckin' complicated" face. And also a great quote from Bandit while playing Mario Kart with a wheel:

How does this system sell 3 million a month?!

I had a great time. The RB room kicked ass, the nacho dipping sauce and the cake were delicous and everyone was extremely chill. Oh, I wanted to take those little Sonic and Knuckles DS thingies but I forgot 'cause I was so tired so maybe next year I'll remember to keep 'em.

Anyway, it was cool meeting Bandit and Shadow and then actually realizing that there are other people in the world who liked Project Justice as much as I do. And are those really the only pics? I could've sworn you took more of us playing RB.
