View Full Version : If you own a PS3 and do not own Wipeout HD... then you hate gaming

I was playing Uncharted this weekend and got stuck so decided to take a break and try out Wipeout HD and OMFG it's amazing. I didn't play Uncharted for the rest of the night and just kept going track after track of Wipeout in all it's 1080p/60FPS goodness. If you don't have it, you must buy it. Sucks that there isn't a demo for it but it's easily worth the $20 bucks!
Oh, and it's got Trophy support too... who doesn't love those?

Eh... It's good for what it is, and has some of the best production values ever seen on console DLC, but if you're not into racing games it's not really gonna change that for you.

I'm getting so frustrated with Wipeout. It seems I hit all the boosts and I can't get over bronze on a lot of levels. F

Yeah, WipEout is known for it's masochistic difficulty. It's great. :)

I fucking loved it.
I spent a couple hours playing it.
If you own a PS3, you need it.

IS there a demo? I'm pretty iffy on racing games and I'd rather be able to give it a test run before committing to buying a game I'll hate after 2 races.

I wouldn't say I hate gaming...just that I hate futuristic combat rocket racing games.

And if any game almost requires a demo it is this. It can get fan-fucking-tastically hard.

I have a PS3 and do not have Wipeout.
I loved Rock N Roll Racing back in the day but that is as close to liking futuristic racing I can get.

I debated getting Wipeout, but I fear that it'll end up the same as F-Zero GX ended up...it'll look super pretty, I'll play for a while then I'll hit that wall where I am just not good enough to proceed and have fun at the same time :(
$10...maybe I would give it a try, for $20...well, there are a lot of other games out there that I want.

I'm on a race like that right now and it's killing me. I swear I hit every boost and still finish 7th... I don't know what else I could be doing wrong.

This is the achillies heal of the PSN... no mandatory demos. I don't like racing games either but I love Wipeout. It's like Mario Kart in the future. But the tron-esqe levels are really amazing.

I do not hate gaming, but I am not a fan of racing games.
You can call me a hater for not loving the tarted up PSP port once you get back to me after finishing Penumbra Overture and Black Plague, STALKER, and the Witcher.

There is seriously no demo? There are very few racing games that I like, and I don't plan on dumping 20 bucks on this and not liking it.

Nope. They seriously are leaving money on the table. Again, PSN's biggest flaw is no mandatory demos.

There will be a demo. The version that they released is the game in demo form and an unlock key. You just can't download the demo by itself yet.

What's with all this talk about this game's difficulty being masochistic. It's a little hard, especially towards the end, but I actually think F-Zero GX's story mode was a TON harder than Wipeout's. I've just got a few golds to go and I will have all golds in Campaign mode, and I hardly dedicate myself to being super good at this game.
As far as Wipeout games go, HD is a little on the easy side, thanks to great controls, crisp visuals, and butter-smooth framerates.
The first few tiers are easy enough that anyone can gold on them with a teeny bit of practice.
Tips:
TURN OFF PILOT ASSIST.
Use the airbrakes, but only when absolutely needed.
Turn a teeny bit earlier than you think you'd need to. Anticipate, don't react, to the curves.
Use the d-pad, not the stick.
TURN OFF PILOT ASSIST.

Huh, I didn't play Sigma, but I did play a ton of Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox. If you died in that version, it was your fault. One of best balanced "difficult" games I've ever played. Well, one of the best games ever made, period, really.
As for WipEout on PS3, I enjoyed the first one for PSP, so I will probably pick this one up after the holidays (or sooner if I notice myself having extra monies and wanting it badly enough).

I was trying to use every single feature of the PS3 this weekend so I bought a PSN pre-paid card at Blockbuster to try it out and I thought myself... now what do I spend this $20 bucks on?????

I hate gaming. Waste of my time. Thanks for allowing me to see the anger for what it was inside of me. All the years I thought I loved video games...living a lie I guess. Now, this revelation...I can be in peace. Thank you. I HATE GAMING. I feel much better. Goodbye.

I don't see how WO is more fair than Ninja Gaiden. The enemy AI in Wipeout is pretty mean IMHO.

I disagree. I remember particularly one save point fairly early on, where you spawned with a camera facing the wall, and three black ninjas behind you somewhere. Basically, the only strategy to get out is to swing wildly behind you, and hope they don't chain those sticky grenades. Goddamn I hate those things. How can you call a game where common bad guys can chain sticky grenade you until you die balanced? How can you say that is my fault?
Sorry for the tone, leaked frustration from having played Ninja Gaiden.

If you guys are having trouble in Wipeout getting past races go into the control configurations. Change the boost button sensitivity down to 10%. This makes it like an on off switch. I instantly passed a ton of races by doing this.

Does Wipeout use a lot of rumble? I still don't have a Dual Shock and I'm wondering if I'll be missing out on a lot.

It's there, but it's not essential. At least I think it's there, I honestly don't recall for sure.

On the plus side, Wipeout HD won't make your stack any bigger!
