The wait has been a long one for Fat Princess. Announced at last year's E3 gamers were taken in by it's charm, and some even got bent out of shape because of it's premise. All that aside, the game was supposed to come out last month, but for some reason saw a delay. Well, the wait is over, because the game has finally gotten a date: it'll be out worldwide with this week's PSN update, 7/30, for $14.99.

So, get ready this week for some class based capture the princess team based cake feeding. With hats. And blood. Lots and lots of blood.

You win for girlfriends. Can you give some pointers to mine? All she has played recently is Uno-Rush and Fallout 3. She liked Fallout 3, she really got into it. When I was downstairs doing some cleaning she suddenly screamed, "Hey, that motherfucker tried stealing my muffin!" Apparently she was none too thrilled with the gang after that, so she let dudes mom die and beat him up. I laughed pretty damn hard.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, hot holy dog shit!!!! It's time, it's time. I have been eyeballing this game since it was announced and played it at E3 to the point where I had to force myself to put in the controller down!

I don't have a headset but I'll have to borrow one from my friend who got the Socom one and never plays. I'ts on, it's on. Crossing fingers for no network problems and hopes it's smooth as butter.

You can blame Sony for not making voice chat mandatory. And it sounds like you are in the minority on this one. I will most likely pick it up on release day.

I agree, the lack of pack in headsets was a stupid oversite, even a very cheap USB one would have been much better.

As far as the price, I'm not saying it isn't worth $15, just that it isn't worth it to me because I don't have a lot of friends to play with on the PS3.

I've been reading that the online is kind of sucking right now so looking forward to more impressions. I can't even think about playing it until late tomorrow night so I'm using this time to make sure I read up and make sure everything is working.

Tried about five online games so far and all of them never made it past connecting or crapped out when joining.

I know it's launch day, but considering how much the devs were bemoaning other online games for these very issues, I'm a little disappointed. Hoping it clears up, has a lot of potential.

Tashi, Troggles and I (and possibly a few others I don't know) played a few rounds successfully without any problems at all. Voice chat works very well, probably the best I've seen yet on a PS3 game.

Pretty fun, frantic little game in the bit we played. Having a team that works together is a major bonus since having the upgraded hats is nice, and a good healer is essential.

IIntrude

Been playing for almost 2 hours now. The game in a bit laggy right now online, with pauses and some warping going on. Also seeing players disappearing into walls and objects.

Other than that it is great fun, though I only heard 2 other people talk in nearly 2 hours. A huge part of the game is upgrading your equipment as soon as possible, which can be hard with everyone going out to gib each other right off the bat :)

So far my Favorite class is the priest. His Dark Priest skill is awesome for draining down enemies, though you have to smack em to issue a coup-de-grau.

Also the devs love them some good TV shows. So far have heard comments from the toons such as...

"I'm gonna cut you into little pieces like the Ice Truck Killer!"
and "Fracking Toaster!"

I've been playing through the Story move and Im close to the end but I've just been playing the same map for an hour. The map is this lava theme where the lava has 'tides' and cuts off certain routes at times. Great fun, but it kind of messes up their AI...I can't get my teammates to help me at all, even when I enlist them.

Great game though, really fun...can't wait to get online.

Just got done with another hour long play session and I must say that this can be a very fun game. I got lucky and found a team who were talking for the most part.

I also noticed this one suicidal Warrior, charging headlong into the fray with abandon. I thought, what the heck, I became a priest and started healing him almost exclusively, and boy did he tear stuff up. It was a ton of fun, he protected me, and I kept him chuggin along. Soon we had a group of him, me, 2 shadow priests, and a mage tagging along, never seen so much gore before. And then something unexpected happened, we saw a Worker come running along the hill side above us with something in his hands, a big something. He chucked it down in the middle of our little unit, and BLAMMM everyone of us got gibbed. Thus we learned that there were large bombs in the game.

Yeah, I just finished playing for a few hours, lots of crazy fun. So far I'm best with the priest and builder.

My one gripe is that it seems like the "pick up" button is most likely to pick up what I least want. Like if there's a group of teammates carrying the princess and I want to assist, I'll get next to them and hit triangle....and pick up a hat off the ground. So I switch to a class I don't want AND don't assist.

Codicier
07-30-2009, 08:29 PM
Played in a game with Sophism but he was on the opposite team. Only about 4 people talking and in the last game (before the host dropped) some douche was berating the team for bullshit.

It's a fun game though, if we had enough people I think we could get a fun all-CoG game going.

My main qualm with the controls are that sometimes, even though my target is well withing range, my healing stream will be directed to a different target suddenly. So far My fav Classes are Priest and Worker as well.

I think I might be a little dumb/forgetful because even though I read through all the tutorial/howto and have hints turned on, I'm still having problems remembering how to do things (I got the princess to my castle and couldn't figure out what to do with her in Chapter 1... took me a bit to bring her to the throne that matched her colors).

I have literally lost every match in this game. I have been teamed up with armies of bluetoothless retards everytime. I have never actually been part of a push for the princess, and even the opposing team wins simply by letting one person slip by our defenses. I am usually the lone worker upgrading the entire base by myself, and it means nothing as the upgraded warriors just run around the base hitting the walls. The community of this game is the definition of what is wrong with public games. Seriously, someone add me. Even if I form some meager semblance of a plan with a single individual that fails horribly, it would be a huge step forward for my experience with this game so far. It is a shame because it is so much fun.

Wow, I'm terribly sorry you have had such dismal experiences with the online portion of the game. I picked it up last night and played through the single player and that was a lot of fun. I played a single online match today just to try it, and while I feel it took too long to get me into a match (a problem with the majority of all online games), the match itself seemed balanced and I wasn't irritated when we lost.

This games a lot of fun. The first few matches that I played online, I was on a team with mostly bots while the other team was mostly players, so I got rolled badly. The last few were pretty even and quite a few people on my team had mics.

There are quite a few connection issues and it takes a few tries to actually get into a game, but it's worth it when you find a good match.

Try a quick match and tell me how successful you are. I'm working a lot right now... a LOT so I have very limited time to play. The few times I've tried I've been totally unsuccessful. Doesn't matter how many people I have in my friends list when the only time I get to play is 3am, no one is on anyway. I just want to play the game and I cannot.

Also, it's very well known and many forums are blowing up about this and not only that the developers have admitted the problems are are working on them. If you are playing every game perfectly fine, connecting with zero lag then you are 100% the exception and not the norm right now.

No burbs for me. I will be staying at the Sofitel Hotel.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not true there.....

Warhawk, Little Big Planet, Socom and those are just first party titles. Seriously, if it's a first party title with a beta then there is ZERO excuse for it not to work at launch. I wouldn't be so negative if I could play the damned thing. I'm just pissed about being burned once again and let down that I got really excited for a title only to have Sony's shitty online environment ruin it for me.

...I don't think you have ever said anything positive about the PS3 but I was just poking fun with my post above. After all, your name has old and jaded in it, I would expect nothing less.

Are you the one that someone asked about your connection? I remember someone here on the boards that was always having a hard time with PS3 games and someone suggested they check their connection. Thought it might have been you.

I've been playing a little this afternoon and even when a host drops a game the transition to the "new" host has been pretty damn fast and smooth. I didn't attempt to play online until today so I can't speak about earlier but today has been a pretty good experience for me.

I've posted more then a few threads about good games for the system and the system over all. In fact... I'm the one that started the original Fat Princess hype thread here!!! I've also been a huge supporter of Afrika and Hot Shots Golf. When it's a good experience or bad one, I'll write about it.

I have a 8meg upload and 16meg download with a 12ping and a type 1 (open) hardwired connection. I have a great connection at my house that is pretty much set up only for gaming.

Please go into Quick Match and let me know how often you time out vs connected.I joined a quick match earlier with zero problems. The other matches I joined I did the "play with friends" option. I'm not sure if that counts or not. If it does count, quick matches are all I have played. Not trying to bag on you, I hope it helps you narrow down any issues you are having.

As I stated, it's not just me. There are lots of forums blowing up about this right now and the developers have even said it's a problem and they are working on a fix.

Here's something to chew on, when everyone was complaining about Castle Crashers I was playing perfectly with my friends all the time and never ran into a single issue... ever.

Resistance 2 worked great from day one, and though I didn't play it, I'm pretty sure KZ2 only had minor issues if any. I'm pretty sure Motorstorm 2 had no issues as well, but I didn't start playing that one until earlier this year. It happens for some games, but it's hardly an issue exclusive to Sony. Hell, just look at Gears of War 2.

EDIT: Oh, and WipEout HD ran fine w/o issues.

Yes, Resistance did work great. Killzone 2 had a slight bump but was patched super fast. These are the exceptions and not the norm. Again, I'm talking about games that had betas. Gears 2 (stupidly) didn't have a beta to work out the issues before hand.

Name a game not on the PS3 that had an online beta and had horrible issues at launch. Socom STILL doesn't work right. Oh, btw... Wipeout HD had big connection issues at launch. Speaking of Resistance 2, I have to give mad props to their community manager who posts regularly on GAF (and gave me a beta code) when he wrote once that the entire reason to do a beta was to make sure that when the game came out that people wouldn't have problems.

Again, it's just major sour grapes from me that I'm excited for a title and get shit on at launch by their crappy service. First it was LBP and now this. I should just learn my lesson already to never buy a game at launch for my PS3 if it has any online element to it.

Buy the official one. Get Socom and sell the game. It's only $10 more then the headset by itself.

Don't buy it yet. Just like every other PSN game at launch it's horrible online is getting in the way of actual gameplay. I've tried to join 5 matches and have error/timed out of every single one of them.

The game is a mess right now. Wait for the patch. Super shitty considering that it's a first party title that had a beta beforehand. You get what you pay for with the PSN.

Yes, because every PC and 360 game is perfect out of the gate. Oh wait... :p

No burbs for me. I will be staying at the Sofitel Hotel.

I'm not sure where that is, but I hope you have a good time in the city! You can PM me if you'd like any recommendations, although I know you said you don't have much free time.

I sometimes wonder if he and Orca are alts of the same bitter, jaded person. :p

Edit - All kidding aside, it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people are experiencing issues with the game. It's something I've come to expect with all online games at launch, as sadly the ones that work are the exception and not the norm. This applies across all platforms though, and is definitely not a PSN-exclusive phenomenon.

Damn, I finally found out why it seemed no one at CoG was playing this game, you guys hid the thread in the news forum. :p

I've been playing since release and I have to agree that the quick match is a horrible way to get into a game, it's only worked once for me so far. Now, I just choose the "Find Game" option and it usually works. Never had anyone talk during the game but I don't think it's because of a lack of mics. Once in a group at the start of the game one guy asked if anyone had a mic and about 7 people answered "yes." No one said another word during the match.

So far my favorites are the Priest and Worker but I have an awful time of healing the right person if there are several people near me (or even far away sometimes.) I like being able to drain with the dark priest but not being able to kill anyone is a real problem if you get separated since there is no way to protect yourself. Occasionally I'll get into a game with a bunch of retards and I go around slaughtering people left and right feeling like a god. Any game that makes me feel like a god is doing something right.

If you just tap the attack button with a priest, you'll swing your staff for minimal damage. So the dark priest can drain somebody down and then bash them for the kill. It's so wonderfully humiliating when I do that to a warrior who started out at full health. :)

It's funny, because I notice ALOT of dark priests sitting there draining an enemies health, yet they never go in for a kill.

As for healing when there's a big group of people, I just switch to the charge heal instead, since you will heal more than one person as well. Just run a few paces back from the front line, start charging it up, then get back to your guys and put as many of your team in the circle as possible before releasing.

Come on... there has to be a game on 360 that had a beta and then had problems at launch. Warhawk, Little Big Planet, Socom, Fat Princess... all had betas and had issues at launch. Those are just off the top of my head. If it's such a common problem that affects all games and not just PSN games...

At the end of the day it's inexcusable. It's a first party title that had a beta to work out these issues and only had a release date recently so it's not like it was rushed to hit a certain date. There should be no excuse why people should be having this issue and it's not just a small amount of people having the issues. It's a very large group and even the devs have admitted it.

But like I said, it's lesson learned for me to not buy online PS3 games at launch.

edit: Btw, Violent... for someone who was so harsh on Castle Crashers problems (with no beta), you seem oddly lenient on the online mess that is Fat Princess.

I was arguing your idea of beta being relevant to release date network infrastructure. There has been a shit ton of games on the 360, PS3 and Wii alike that have had shit netcode upon release. I don't see a beta as being a sufficient qualification to dictate what is inexcusable. Beta, no beta, demo, no demo. A game is released with shit netcode and it's inexcusable. This is my point. And I assure you, they are abundant in every platform.

And to correct you, I am not being lenient towards Fat Princess. In order to do so, I would have to have played it online and omitted certain facts. As it stands, I bought it just last night and haven't played a single multi game yet. When that time comes I assure you there won't be lenience as you so put it.

For me, I'd say 1 out of 3 games has pretty bad lag, but it's getting better every time I play. Today I had a couple of games where the host left and all but one found a new host within 5 seconds and kept going.

This game supports a large number of players, and it seems they are using the P2P model so that could be where a lot of the lag is coming from.

I dunno, I kind of like the way it forces you to learn about the levels on your own. Of course, for now I find it frustrating when I can't find a tree or stone to collect from but in the future having a team leader that understands the lay of the land better than the other team's leader could be a boon in battle. I was thinking more for Pincess locations and who owns which tower. The maps are easy enough to remember, but the "Enemy has captured a tower" messages and Princess indicator are all but useless in their current form. They are giving you half the information you need to be effective.

-Tell me which tower we just lost. This is much more useful to me than just telling me we lost a tower.
-Tell me where the Princess is. It doesn't really help me to know she is 25% across the map when there are 3 paths across that map.

A simple minimap that had towers and princess locations (and nothing more) would solve this and make for a better game.

You're cracking me up. Every time there is a discussion like this you find a loophole to hang your argument on. This time you're off the deep end and using the beta/no beta. You're actually positioning the games which didn't beta at all as better than the games that did, at least in terms of trying to have smooth release.

I played the Castle Crashers demo. I held off on buying it until hearing how the netcode was at release. The netcode had issues, I did not buy it. If you think that was nasty, you might want to stop viewing things through your fanboy decoder ring.

Considering the thread title is "Fat Princess Priced & Dated" I think it is rather silly of you to think posting should be limited to only people who have purchased the game. I suppose the thread was started and then was supposed to sit idle until the first lucky person bought a copy of the game?

I'll no more buy Fat Princess with faulty netcode than I would Castle Crashers. But you don't see me insinuating that this issue is unique to one platform or the other.

Trust me, I can vouch for the fact that both Random and myself can handle a situation by ourselves so don't feel that this was a coordinated attack on you because if that were really the case, things would have been much uglier than they were. That aside:

You claim you didn't bitch about CC because you didn't have any issue. That's entirely understandable. What is more difficult to swallow is your accusation that I chose to overlook all issues of Fat Princess. That I'm willing to bitch about one game and not about another game with similar faults. Not only did you make this presumption based on so little evidence that you failed to realize I haven't owned the game for more that 15 hours and not a single multi match had been played, but you actually believed I chose to omit my bad experiences instead of consider for one second that I may not have had issue. The very thing that you feel separates you from everyone else who may have actually had issue. That good sir, is called a hypocrite. You sir, are a hypocrite.

And since we're here, you have to imagine your argument loses luster when you complain people came into your Fat Princess thread and derailed it by bringing up Castle Crashers, then you go into another Fat Princess thread and are the very first person to bring up Castle Crashers. You have forgiven after months of it not being fixed, some of us haven't. Neither opinion is right or wrong, it's merely preference. It's the guy that says the other opinion is stupid though, that is the only ignorant thing in the equation. You catching my drift here?

A few comments:

- Single player is fun, but it's more than a little frustrating to find four of your teammates just running into walls not going anywhere. I played the first four single player levels and saw this problem in every one of them. I understand that the focus is on multiplayer, but that doesn't mean that the single player should have such a big problem.

- Took me about five tries to connect to a multiplayer game (using the "find a game" option, not quick play). Once I finally got connected to a game I didn't have anymore problems. I had some issues in two out of the three games I played with some lag, but nothing too terrible. The game seems really fun for multiplayer, but the teams I was on really stunk. Once people get used to the game a little more (if you haven't played it yet and plan on it, go through a few single player missions to get used to the different classes and upgrades) it should be better I would imagine. I need to play with some CoG people and get myself a headset!

- I really enjoy playing the worker, although I have a question. How do you fix doors? Do you target it first and then hit square? Or maybe circle? It seems to be very hit and miss for me and in the middle of combat I have trouble figuring out what is working. I think the priest (white, not black) is my second favorite class, just because they can make a big difference and not enough people seem to play as them. I'd probably put mage last on my list of classes, as I would rather play the ranger if I am going to be a ranged class.

Overall it's a fun game. It looks and sounds great, the credits are funny as are many other parts of the game, and I think it's going to be a great game...eventually. Could use a little work as far as matchmaking goes and the pathfinding in single player stinks, but otherwise I'm not regretting my purchase.

Target with L1 and then hammer Square, just like harvesting. The first time you build a door, it takes no resources, but rebuilding them can take a lumber or two (I didn't catch this at first, either). It seems like on some maps only the first (of two) pieces of the gate is free, the second door needing one lumber, but I could be mistaken.

Ah, this makes a lot of sense. I definitely noticed that sometimes door upgrades seemed free and other times my team didn't have the lumber.

It is very annoying when the opposing team knocks down your doors and there is no lumber available because everyone is out there throwing bombs instead of cutting down trees!

I've only connected to a single online game and I timed out after playing that. I did the Jump In option for that. Took me about 8 tries before I got in. I've been trying the Find Game with no luck. I've searched 3 times with no game just while typing this. I get to the "connecting to host" then I get "a slight problem". I'm trying hosting games too but only end up playing with bots the entire time.

I'm getting trophies doing it that way but would still like to actually connect to just one game tonight. Maybe I should just go back to COD4 and wait for a patch.

This game sounds fun but I'm not buying it until they fix all the issues I've read about. Any word from the developers on when they would be?

Are you guys finding that you are kicking serious ass online? I'm a pc gamer and have just started playing consoles, so I don't know if it's the community or what.

My current kill to death ratio is over 4:1 and I have zero knowledge of the maps.

It always costs three wood to build a door. Your team starts with six wood, and as soon as you start construction on something, the resources are subtracted. If a door is destroyed, it requires three wood to rebuild it.

Go away. You're not welcome here.

Thinking of picking this up tomorrow. Anyone still playing? Have the lag/connection issues improved since launch?

I'm still playing now and again and yes, the lag issues are pretty much ironed out, but then again I never had the level of issues that people had pre-patch.
