Thanks to our very own Gorvi for the tip...
Sony today announced the details of upcoming firmware üpdates for both the PlayStation Portable (ver. 5.00) and PlayStation 3 (ver. 2.50).
Let's start with the v5.00 üpdate for PSP. In this version, you'll notice the addition of the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB. You can now sign up for PlayStation Network, manage your account and access PlayStation Store directly from your PSP - meaning you can download games directly to your PSP while connected via Wi-Fi. Getting games, demos and trailers while on-the-go has never been easier! Check out the screen below.
The current PlayStation Store on the PC will be down in the interim as we take some time to revamp. Don't worry, it will re-launch soon after we've made some tweaks. Please keep in mind, if you already have a PlayStation Network account, simply sign in on your PSP using your existing information. The same account and wallet can be used on PS3 and PSP. You will be able to check out the PlayStation Store on the PSP soon, as we'll have a video demo featuring Grace Chen posted soon on the Blog.
üpdate v5.00 adds a sleep timer option that can be used while you are playing music on your PSP. In addition, we've added a full screen keyboard option for text entry and have redesigned the background of the XMB. You'll be able to find all of the information on Firmware v5.00 here once it goes live.
PS3 Firmware üpdate (ver. 2.50)
Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Accessories/SCPH-98095) - we've told you about the upcoming Bluetooth Headset and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Bundle on the blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/10/02/see-the-official-playstation-bluetooth-headset/) . This latest firmware installment enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. On top of that, an added on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.
PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements - I know that many of you are busy collecting trophies and raising your PlayStation Trophy level. This üpdate makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you'll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend's level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.
Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
Video – This üpdate adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.
PlayStation Store – We've added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.

I think In-game screenshots is fantastic, especially for games like Soul Calibur 4 where people want to share their creations. Unfortunate that it's only on a game-by-game basis so far, but hopefully it can be implemented fully in the future.

Nice, the screen search and shutdown after finishing downloads are both great features...auto shutoffs being a long time coming.
Screen search will be great for those times I get a network error while partway through a file.

Nice nice.
Love the auto shutdown feature. Often times I don't get something off of PSN because the downloads are so damn slow, and I can't justify leaving the machine on all night. Now if it would install something for me automatically (invisibly would be even better!) I'd be happy instead of placated.
Screen shots sound EXCELLENT! Maybe next-gen they'll build in the feature from the start so it works across every game. Hell, I hope they get their ducks in a row for the PS4 to ensure things like custom soundtracks, trophies, cross-game chatting, and screen shots work in every single damn game instead of the haphazard mess we have now.

Great! I always forget to turn my controller off while I use the PS3 for something other than gaming and as a result I have to charge it too damn often.

Is there any way to organize videos into folders or playlists, instead of having them in one big list? I know they have sort options, but I'd like to categorize them, if possible. You can setup playlists on your PC acting as a media server, but I haven't seen anything like this for video files stored locally on the PS3.

Yeah. There's a way to kind of group them... but they don't give you a whole lot of control. You can assign each video to an 'album' and then sort by album, but it is limited. I feel like they give me enough options to want a real PC type interface of multiple folders. How come I can browse an entire directory tree on my external drive, but I can't maintain it or make a tree on the local machine? The world may never know.

As for the screenshot feature: awesome. Hopefully developers implement it in games where the players ask for it. I'd definitely like to see it in Soul Calibur IV, GTA IV, and I know people will want it for LittleBigPlanet.

You can group photos, videos, and games that way. I have my demos and download games (loosely by genre) all seperated by album. Yeah, I can be a bit OCD at times. ;)

Yep. I've got my games in two folders Demos and Games. I'd love a deeper experience though for the movie/photo organization as the 'one level of folders' is not nearly enough for a supercomputer

$50 stand alone, $60 bundled w/SOCOM: Confrontation. I'm seriously considering buying SOCOM and then just selling the game.

Isn't the advantage in using Bluetooth that one does not have to purchase special, proprietary hardware? Why the need for a special headset?
Is this where we get into another spreadsheet war where people say the 360 is a rip-off because they don't give you WiFi and the PS3 is a rip off because they don't give you voice chat?

It's a damn nice headset. Honestly, I figure I can probably eBay the SOCOM game for $30-$40, so $20-$30 actual cost for me for a pretty good headset seems like a good deal. That, and I could use one for my phone.

You can use any bluetooth headset. I've got 3, and all 3 work just fine. Funnily enough, I bought the Jabra BT125 before they had the Warhawk box that came with it. That headset was either really low, or would never broadcast my words. My MGS4 headset (which just got a price drop, fuck you very much) is excellent.
But damn if I don't want the Socom one as well.

You don't HAVE to get this one. But if you do, you get some extra features (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Accessories/SCPH-98095) that aren't available with a standard BT headset. And if you want to use it with other BT devices you can do that too.

I dunno. Being a gadget guy I've gotten a number of headsets ranging from the cheap to the absurdly priced. Even modded one once (http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/20/the-nes-controller-bluetooth-headset/). Back in 2005, the thing cost me $25. These days I wouldn't pay more than than $15 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10487) for one of the things... which isn't a bad deal if you were ready to pay full price for SOCOM anyway. Then again people pay hundreds of $ for sunglasses. I end up inadvertently sitting on mine. ;)
Sure, it is a nice-looking headset... but how I look while playing a video game in the comfort of my own home is of little concern to me.

One thing about the Socom headset is that you know with a 100% fact that every online game is going to be tested with it because it's official.
You cannot say that about any other bluetooth headset. The official one is guaranteed to work with each online game since Sony will be using it during their certification process.

Didn't they bundle one with Warhawk too? Are both of them tested all the time for all official releases?
Bluetooth headsets have been around for a number of years now. I've never had a phone or PC that wouldn't pair with a headset. Is compatibility really that much of an issue?

I wouldn't mind if it would download in the background while I'm watching a DVD... the way my 360 and PC do. Then I wouldn't have to worry about having it shutdown after a download.
Any chance of Sony implementing an Auto Install feature in future firmware? I hate waiting for those too

Why does Sony insist on INSTALLS? Is it because they want to make it less of dedicated device and more of a computer? I can think of better ways of doing that.
DangerousDaze

I would think it's done because the last thing you want half way through an installation is to lose your network connection and end up with half a product installed. The chances of that happening are non-negligible so it's safer to do it in two distinct steps.
Doesn't the installation delete the staging data when it's completed, freeing up that space?

I think so but still does does not help you of you say want to download an 800MB game and you have 850MB free. Plus like most, I tend to use my memcard for storing as much data as I can fit on there, with movies and songs and stuff. Right now I have an 8GB card with about 300MB free.
