It appears as though Shin Megami Tensei, one of our community's most adored series, is getting a brand new entry for the DS. Atlus has recently teased its new game: Strange Journey.
Strange Journey will feature over 300 demons, some ripped directly from the recently-released Devil Survivor, and appears to be a first-person RPG that Joystiq compares to Etrian Odyssey, another local favorite.
The game releases in Japan this October. Meanwhile, check out the scans here (http://wiieveryday.blogspot.com/2009/07/famitsu-20090724.html).

I like the picture over at 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3175246). One of the main aspects is that it takes place in the antarctic.

The fact that this is in the first person makes me think this is the proper SMT4, the first in the main series since SMT3: Nocturne.
Edit: And it looks like 1up agrees.

Comparing it to Etrian Odyssey is a little like comparing Rogue to Diablo II.
SMT's been at the first person thing for far, far longer. I'm pleased to see they're returning to the format. The original Persona was one of the few first-person Gold Box style RPGs I actually liked, and I was disappointed to see them abandon it in the main series in favor of the awful dullness that was Nocturne.

Yes. You do. Or you may have to relinquish your Atlus fanboy membership.

I think I can manage getting that some time, but I'm still ignoring all the non-Persona PS2 MegaTen games. ;)

I haven't managed to complete it, got kind of boring when the combat didn't get any more complex over time. I wouldn't recommend playing it directly after playing on of the PS2 SMT games. Feels basically like Persona Lite.
I'm hoping they make at least one or two for DS that haven't been dumbed down.

Devil Survivor is fun, but it rapidly became obvious that most of the game was going to be running, quite literally, the same combat over and over again. If you try to just progress through the story naturally, you will get trounced, which means grinding the free battles on the same maps against the same monsters over and over, and my resolve to do that sort of thing is practically non-existent, especially when the game's tactical options are so limited as to be a constant source of frustration.

My initial reaction is "Oh god, the raping that will occur when SMT is mixed with EO."
Then I realize I'll play through it even if it unfairly kicks my ass.

And I think EO just might be a little tame compared to the old MegaTen games.

I want Atlus to make a damn decision on which platform they're supporting for their premier games, so I can adapt accordingly. These DS games are nice and all, but they're not a PS3/360 Megaten, which is what I want.

How long till someone has to buy the game and play it before the membership is revoked? I didn't buy it yet either :p

Well, since it's a very official, very exclusive club...it happens whenever you feel like it.

I haven't played very far in the SNES MegaTen games, but they're pretty unforgiving.

I am interested, and hoping it keeps my interest longer than Devil Survivor, which I quickly got over.
