Slowly but surely the veil is starting to be lifted off of id Software's upcoming title Rage. The cover story to the newest issue of Game Informer reveals a number of previously unknown details about the post-apocalyptic shooter-driving hybrid.

An engineering system to craft devices including sentry turrets and RC car bombs, if you have the blueprints and parts.
Your health regenerates--a gift connected to your history.
Hub towns house offer races and missions.
Vehicular combat is a big part of racing, with power-ups and ammo placed around the courses.
Weapon upgrades, such as a scope and aiming stabilisers for a crossbow.
Alternate ammo types, including a crossbow bolt which allows you to briefly control victims before they explode.
Stealth is an option in combat too.
A gladiatorial game show named Mutant Bash TV offers big prize money.
A car parts system allows boosts to areas such as acceleration, traction and suspension.
Other car upgrades include bombs, a magnet to draw power-ups, tire shredders and EMP shields.
Multiplayer modes are currently not finalised.
One weapon is a three-tipped boomerang called the 'wingstick,' which will return.
The PC version will offer higher resolutions, more anti-aliasing and faster texture page-in times, but the three versions are essentially the same.

The game is still being designed for the PS3 and 360 in addition to a PC release, but having to deal with the limitations of the DVD medium on the 360 is a challenge. The game will ship on 1 Blu-Ray disc for the PS3 but 3 DVDs for the other platforms and trying to decide how to divide the game is proving difficult.

When will Rage be in our hot little hands? id says the game will be out "when it's fun and when it's done," but definitely not this year.

I'm very interested in how this turns out. It sounds like a lot more ambitious title than we usually get to showcase id's latest engine. I imagine the issue of splitting onto DVDs isn't a huge deal on PC. I'll just be doing the super install size. Hopefully the 360 version won't suffer from too many disc swaps though.

What's the challenge on the PC? It's not like you need to stream from the disks. Give us an installer, and the disc is unnecessary.

This sounds overly ambitious. I was really hoping for sort of fantasy or alternate history game rather than another apocalyptic sci-fi type thing, because I'm a bit burnt out on apocalyptic sci-fi.

I never thought it possible for a game to sound so ambitious and yet so damn generic at the same time. Also, is that an "Anarchy" symbol in the game's logo...where the "A" should be. OOH HOW EDGY!!11!1one.

What's the challenge on the PC?

They didn't say there was one, only that it's a challenge for the 360.

It's pretty much decided for me that it will be PC I grab it on, but I'm slightly irked that it's still talked about as 2010, and possibly before 2011... But, I want it finished and there's enough else I'll have to buy coming up, I guess.

Sounds like a twitch-based Fallout 3 (though, likely much more limited in scope), which is alright by me.

For some reason, I can't help but think "Mario Kart", but this does actually sound like something I'd pick up and play, and I'm not a huge fan of racers.

Keeping an eye on this one.

There's a big cover feature in this month's Game Informer on RAGE. It looks pretty, which is par for the course with an id game, but I'll reserve my excitement for a demo.

Errrr... yeah. That's kinda what this news post was about. :)

If it's worth saying, it's worth saying TWICE. :D

I hadn't paid much attention to this one until now. It sounds interesting enough that I will keep an eye out for more info.

When it was first announced I thought it was going to be just another Doom/Quake clone, but it looks like they're trying something different with it. Although by the time this comes out the whole "post apocalyptic" wasteland setting is going to be feeling a little old.

Or 'current,' depending on which side of the Glenn Beck program you fall on. ;)
