View Full Version : Welcome to Colony of Gamers

col•o•ny: a group of individuals or things with common characteristics or interests situated in close association, i.e. an artist colony (Webster Dictionary, definition #4a)
The Colony Xbox 360 Ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB5AugdCl4M), 14 seconds in: “You are the colony, you’ve found your way into the center and you’re in control. This experience revolves around you.” (J Allard)
Yes, the above may be a bit hokey, but it was the one visual/audio that popped into my head and started our path down a site revolving around the word “colony” in order to convey how much we believe in the Community and how much we want this to be a cooperative endeavor.
Welcome to the Colony of Gamers (http://www.colonyofgamers.com) website, or CoG for short. CoG is a website co-founded and developed by seven former Evil Avatar users and, in many cases, former staffers. As you may have heard on Evil Avatar Radio this past Monday, September 29th, both Nick Puleo (bapenguin) and James A. Young (fitbabits) resigned after several years at their positions with Evil Avatar. At the very end of the radio program, the radio group also reverted back to In-Game Chat and disassociated from the site. Starting with their podcast on Thursday, October 2nd, In-Game Chat becomes the official radio and podcast home of Colony of Gamers. There are ideas for other podcasts on the site, but IGC will be the key twice weekly source every Monday and Thursday bringing you the same sort of coverage they were before. Many of us followed Nick and James out the door not long after. We had hoped to be at EvAv through October 1st, but plans were altered.
What is Colony of Gamers? Think of it as a website where our users and the Community as a whole are the #1 priority. This is truly a website built by us for the good of the future Community and we look forward to the Community’s thoughts on the website itself while it is still going through the construction phase. As you can see, we have a forum all ready to go and a front page news section (with news!) much like you saw at our former digs. In the future you will see the same kind of previews and reviews you saw at the other site as well. Gone is the era of one person making all the decisions, in its place is a group of people whose sole purpose is to make CoG a place for everyone to come and share in the Community atmosphere.
Different members of the managing group have at various times talked about leaving the old stomping grounds and starting up a new website. Some of you may think the whole “Magic PC” thing started this idea up, but the truth is it had been thought about long before then. Many of us decided to stay after the “Magic PC” situation and rode it out through PAX. About a month went by and something else came up that once all of us heard about it, we decided to leave EvAv en mass and hopefully come back together on another website, which ultimately led to the opening of this site. As a side note, we are also hopeful the news that was the catalyst for us leaving Evil Avatar will eventually be told to the Community over there because they deserve to have full disclosure.
Without further ado, we present to you the seven people behind CoG. You will notice something a bit different in how our names are presented on the front page. We are planning going by our given names on the front page and, in most cases, the nicknames you all know in the forums. We want to make ourselves look as professional as we can to the public and to companies that will hopefully follow us from EvAv to here. For those that don’t know or are unfamiliar with our real names, the EvAv nickname is in parenthesis.
Scott Benton (Psykoboy2): In-Game Chat Producer
Michael Chauvet (Dr. Finger): Senior News Editor
Loren Halek (AgtFox): Senior Features Editor
Mike Katsufrakis (Pheriannath): Art Director
Nicholas Puleo (bapenguin): Community Relations Manager
Andrew Soep (Siraris): Senior Site Editor
James A. Young (fitbabits): Managing Editor
We also want to introduce you to our first staffer, someone who did a lot of press coverage when none of us were available to go to them:
Andrew Hodder (TrackZero): Associate Features Editor
In many cases jobs have transferred over laterally, while some others have been juggled a bit. Also, with Nick, Andrew Soep and Scott on board we have created a little media network between CoG, Co-Optimus (http://www.co-optimus.com) (Nick’s site, one more honed in on co-op gaming), Play It Review It (http://www.playitreviewit.com) (Andrew’s site, for users to post their reviews and thoughts), the new In-Game Chat (http://www.ingamechat.net) as well as Immortal Machines (http://www.immortalmachines.com) and the comic podcast Johnny Gigawatt and the Tiger Men from Mars (http://www.johnnygigawatt.com/). James is now the overall ship rudder for the site with Nick commanding the important Community side of the equation. The major difference at CoG versus EvAv is that instead of one person at the head of the whole operation making decisions, we are a group of people with equal stakes in the process as well as CoG’s future.
As a showing of good faith to our incoming users and Community, we have paid for the first six months of site hosting and the software CoG is built upon. We decided on using vBulletin as the software base once again since we are all very familiar with it, but this time around we have another extra goodie for our future users and Community: your very own blog sections (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/blog.php) on the site like our friends at Cheap-Ass Gamer (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php) have. So, after you have 25 posts in the forum (to keep out riff-raff) you can blog about whatever you want and people in the CoG Community and all around the world can read about it on your own little corner of the CoG site. This is just one example of you, the user, becoming more a part of the overall site and Community than you did at the other place.
Eventually there will come a time where we will ask for donations from our users so that they feel even more a part of the website as a whole. We hope by that point you will find we bring a better Community atmosphere, better coverage, podcasts, news and reviews/previews here at CoG and our affiliate sites of Co-Optimus (http://www.co-optimus.com), Play It Review It (http://www.playitreviewit.com), In-Game Chat (http://www.ingamechat.net), Immortal Machines (http://www.immortalmachines.com) and Johnny Gigawatt and the Tiger Men from Mars (http://www.johnnygigawatt.com/) than before. We also hope that you think we took the best people from the old website and created a great team over here.
One of our key points in starting this website was the idea that we want to be transparent with you, the Community. We want to be honest about how much money we are looking for when asking for donations and maybe set up a widget so people can actually see the amount donated. We also want to tell you where any of the extra money would go if you want to continue donating. The money could go to things like future site upkeep (such as moving to a larger hosting plan) or split among the founders and future staff here at CoG as just two examples. We want you to know how the money you graciously donate is being spent on this site and the people running it. We also plan to have giveaways much like we used to at the other site and hope the Community will join in donating items for such giveaways.
Thank you for making it to the bottom of our introduction to Colony of Gamers. We are excited about this venture and hope all of you will join us in the future.

Great opening post. It says everything that needed to be said without flinging any accusations or mud flinging. I can't wait to see how this community grows through the years.
And there WILL be yearly meetings at PAX. Heck, we should even petition to have our own panel.

"How to Save a Community"
Welcome, everyone! We hope you enjoy what we've put together and hopefully agree with the philosophy behind the founding of CoG. We can't stress enough that the community is what made EvAv great, and we want to encourage you to visit all the sites in our little network.
Also, your membership is predicated on your ability to keep the Caturday thread on the sidebar at all times. You have been warned.

I've already made the decision to make this my new home. I was still somewhat hesitant to leave EvAv after the whole Magic PC thing, but the last few days have convinced me that it was time to move on.
I can't wait to spend more time here and see the community grow and evolve! Great job guys and kudos on the great site design!

I can't thank you guys enough. Seriously. Video games could disappear tomorrow and I wouldn't give a fuck. I've ALWAYS been here for the community first and foremost. The founders of CoG has found a new home for me and my battered brethren, and I couldn't thank you more.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Speaking personally, I am beyond happy to be involved with something like this from the ground up.
As for IGC (http://www.ingamechat.net)...for me, it feels exactly the same as when Phil Kollar asked us if we'd like to take the mantel of EvAv Radio. Even more so, since we were wanted by these guys to bring the show over and do it, not how they wanted us to, but how we wanted to. It's an amazing amount of freedom and respect, equally shared not only with IGC and CoG...but with all the sites and well...the community as a whole involved.
And to those looking for answers - pay close attention to the last paragraph.

Thanks for the great introduction, Loren. I would like to add my own tuppence-worth:
First of all, welcome to all my friends, both old and new. As Loren indicated in his introduction, the goal of CoG is to provide everyone involved with a fun, involved, professional 'home' to call their own - be it through your own CoG-powered blog, or through other contributions. You have at your disposal the tools to say what you want to say, when you want to say it, and without interference from the Founders (within reason, of course).
Secondly, I want to thank Nick, Loren, Mike, Michael, Andrew, Scott, and Andrew for all their hard work in getting Colony of Gamers up and running in record time. I firmly believe that the good ship CoG is in very competent hands and I look forward to leading us on a very exciting journey.
Thirdly, and consider this a cheese warning... The site may say "Powered by vBulleting, vBAdvanced", but the real power here is YOU.

Agreed. I spend WAY more time interacting with this community than I do actually playing games. I'm glad that the community will live on, and I look forward to doing some actual gaming with many of you in the future.

I'm really ashamed to admit that I never listened to Evil Avatar radio. I always meant to, but as time went on I just never did. I don't have a good reason, and I regret not listening from the beginning.
I'm going to be making up for that by listening to the show from this point on. A fresh new start gives me a good kick in the butt to start downloading it!

Congrats on the launch.
I've been browsing through various threads on the different sites all day trying to find out what the hell was going on, so I'm also glad to not have to worry about that anymore. Hopefully everyone that had spread out to a few sites will concentrate most of their posts here so I don't have to look around too much to find all my favorite posters. At the least, I'll be happy if those wacky handheld guys come over. :D
Plus now everything can go back to being about the games and all the cool people around here rather than the constant drama. Yay.
Edit: Oh no, what are were going to do without the constant discussion about "fitbabits"? Being corrected after calling JAYoung "Jay Oung" just won't feel the same. :p

And to those looking for answers - pay close attention to the last paragraph.
I had a feeling it had to be something that severe to inspire yesterday's mass exodus. I'll never point my browser to Evil Avatar again. Sorry to begin with something so negative.

I do have a question though: What's the rationale behind keeping all the sites separate? It seems like the functions of the different forums could be threaded together pretty well to make it easier for users to move back and forth from discussion, reviews, and co-oping.
Edit: Yeah, someone kidnap Spigot.
Hmm, that looks like a hint that the trouble over at EvAv was partially due to lack of financial transparency and maybe misuse of funds.

The rationale is that the other sites were around before CoG was. Other people own those sites (some of which are CoG founders) and it's a disservice to have them close down all the work they have done just to be fused into CoG.
I hate to bring this thought up, but think of this grouping of sites as a Gawker-like one. Gawker includes such sites as Kotaku, Valleywag, Gizmodo and the Consumerist.
CoG will be the all-encompassing site, people can talk about whatever they want.

I think this is very important to reinforce as well. Each site still has its own identity and focus, while being able to contribute to the community as a whole without too much overlap.

Great..er, grand opening guys.
As many of you know I'm not a big poster. In part due to my lacking grammar, spelling and typing skills. I have played with many of you that have moved here and would certainly call most of you friends in real life. So I am looking forward to being part of this colony. I'm not crazy about not having a combined board, But I understand why. Trying to get my post count up to a respectable level across 3 sites feels a little daunting after leaving the only site Ive ever poster more than 1K on.

Just wanted to pop in an make a quick post to say thanks for setting up CoG, guys. It looks fantastic. I've been a reader of EvAv for years now, and while never a crazy active poster over there, I plan on being a lot more active over here.
So glad to see this finally happen.
Congratulations! Even though I am saddened by no P&R, I look forward to posting here.

Co-Optimus is a niche site built around co-op games
PlayitReviewit is a site that is built as a repository for everyday users to post reviews of games they play
Immortal Machines is built around PC games
I don't want them to be completely fused, but a unified log-in would be nice. Open Id would one way to do that. It would also be nice to send people back and forth, so if someone is looking at Co-Optimus' page for a game and they want to review it, it's an easy click over to PiRi. Or make it simple for someone hanging out at CoG to zip over to Co-Op's game page if they want a co-op partner.
fitty is here.....master of all post counts.
Or he was. Looks like about a third of them are gone now.

Well, I quickmarked the User CP, so I'll probably stick around here.
Immortal Machines is still kinda important to me though, the world needs a good PC forum. We haven't been able to do much to promote the site, hell, Voodoo's been having enough trouble just getting the hosting squared away, and most of the people who made their exodus to there from EvAv then seemed to exodus right back inside of a few weeks.
But hey, I can always use another active forum on my list besides bloody /tg/.

Hey!! I'm one of those expatriates that has been floating around the stratosphere waiting to land again full time. I've been posting on EvAv and PiRi, but EvAv HAS changed in the last few months. It feels almost like 1984 at times.
Anyway, if you guys need anything, any help whatsoever, don't hesitate to ask. I was a big-time EvAver who became disenchanted at EvAv a year ago or so, and since I "returned" my posting status went from chronic to occasional. I hope that changes on CoG. In fact, I think it will. If anyone needs to rape some of my "skills", I'm yours.

Since the Magic PC fallout, which I wasn't part of but thought was unfair, I have been bouncing back and forth making little posts here and there. Now I feel better there is a communal place to settle. We're getting older, with more life distractions, but our core community has stayed together. I was all excited about being able to say "I was there when it all began" in a few years time when CoG has eclipsed EvAv...now I just look like some Johnny-come-lately October newb. Curses! :D

I know it may not be a nice thing to say but I really hope someone puts evil in his place... preferably with fists.
A bit extreme. I would imagine that this latest mass exodus, following on so soon after the Magic PC debacle, and loss of many long time users, will force him to reconsider his position, which is a good thing.
Wishing violence on the man because he acted like a dick on the internet is just childish.

I've always been pretty much a lurker, and I was sorry to see how things have gone over at EA. Still, this site looks like something good has come from all that trouble.
Anyway, happy to be lurking here now. Thanks for putting this together!

Kudos on the site fellas, already loving it. Thank you for putting it together. Glad I'm here in the beginning as I'm really excited to see what this site evolves into, and hopefully become a part of it. Was never much of a poster at EvAv, but it was the community that kept me coming back.

For the last few days almost every reply was by yellows. Not that being a yellow was bad or anything, but I noticed that on that site the people who were more passionate about their gaming were the ones that donated (both time and money). The forums have been extremely dead lately, and I didn't feel like even visiting as much, which I won't, now. This place feels more like the old community that I liked.

I should have it this week...hopefully. Gamefly hasn't emailed me yet about WHAT is shipping out this week. I hope it's Silent Hill. I timed my return just right.
Anyway, I'll let you know how it is if I get to play it.

Frankly, Evil has been working overtime lately to shed off any respect he may have deserved. That said, this community should be classier than that.

I would vote for the panty thread but that would be showing bias...toward my fetish of soft porn panty pics ;)

Hello there stranger :p
So how is the Gamefly working out? I have Silent Hill too coming. Although I still have to finish Origins
Yo yo.
Gamefly is okay right now. Two games were shipped on the 19th, I received the first on 22nd, the second on 24th (don't know why one took longer than the other). Beat them both and placed them back in the mail to ship out 29th. Haven't received any updates from Gamefly yet, so I don't know. So far so good, though I need to learn to beat one, ship it back and start the other. Instead, I played both equally until I beat them both within a couple hours.
I'm guessing it will take up to a week to receive my next games, with time for my shipment to arrive at Gamefly, and the new games to arrive to me. Sorta sucks I won't have anything to play until next week, since I put them both in the mail on Sunday. Aren't they supposed to have some sort of quick-shipping feature since they're partnered with USPS? Like, the games I mail out are scanned at the PO, so Gamefly sends my next one immediately before physically receiving the ones I mailed back?

I don't know what the deal is with the quick return thing... It seems like about 1/3 of the games I ship back get detected the day I put them in the mail, the rest make the full trip before being acknowledged. Of course, they are Johny on the spot when I'm not waiting for anything specific, but when I send stuff back almost a week early to try and get in on a new release, they don't show up forever.
All in all, still very pleased with the service, as I buy all my games through them for a significant discount after giving them a test drive.

Which raises a point...
There is no reason people can't visit both sites and contribute in whatever way they deem fit.
I will add, though, that at least here you'll KNOW how your donations are being used - at all times. In fact, I actively encourage people to email me or shoot me a PM with any questions you may have concerning donations... That is, when we open the financial floodgates. :)

I suppose you mean I don't know because I never worked with him, that would be true, but the few interactions I have had have always been fine. I also contributed money a bunch of times. Not loads mind you, but enough. I would do the same here if asked and I liked the place, same as anyone.
I like the folks here and I like the folks there.
Edit: I just realized that you may mean something about donations. I hope they are actually needed to run the site, but if not, oh well. As long as its not being used to rape babies or something. I have no reason other than the recent comments here to believe they are being used inappropriately.

I suppose you mean I don't know because I never worked with him, that would be true...I haven't seen any official confirmation, but from what I gather, Evil was gathering donations under false pretenses. Whether that means he was gimping the site to pocket more of the money, or just claiming the site was in a worse situation than it actually was I don't know for sure.
As the saying goes, pardon our dust while we make some tweaksies.Oh, no worries. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one. Thanks for all you guys are doing to make the transplant successful :D

I think he's saying that you donated under the pretense it would somehow give back to site, whereas you don't actually know where the money went. So in a way, he could have done you wrong by mis-using donations.

To be clear...
It's reasonable to assume that people donating to any site under are doing so in the understanding that these donations are being used to grow the site, or to maintain it. Especially during donation drives.
When you donate to public radio, you know your contributions are being used appropriately.
I guess accountability is key to what I'm getting at here.
Everyone, no matter if they donated $5 or $500, has a right to know how their donations are being used. At any site.
