Here are the software and hardware numbers from Japan, straight from Media Create (http://www.m-create.com/ranking/), for the week 07/06 to 07/12.
Dragon Quest IX has dropped and predictably sold millions, 2,318,932, to be exact, in only 2 days of recorded sales (having been released on the Saturday). Dragon Quest VIII sold an impressive 3.68 million on PS2 and the DS version is likely to surpass that, perhaps even before the end of the year. Dragon Quest IX sales were accompanied by a boost in DSi sales, with the DSi selling 118,202 units.
The success of Dragon Quest has failed to disguise the overall downturn in Japanese game and hardware sales. 7 to 10 on the Top 10 Software chart all sold below 10,000 copies. The PS3 sales dropped below the 10,000 mark, while 360 sales were once again embarrassingly close to those of the PS2.
This week there is Pro Baseball Spirits from Konami on both the PS3 (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-zd-49-en-70-3dzv.html) and PS2 (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-ci-49-en-70-3dzw.html). Awatama (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-cl-49-en-70-3dsd.html) is a cute looking puzzle game on the DS. Also for DS is the Harry Potter movie tie-in (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-cl-49-en-70-3dd6.html).
My pick for this week is yet another remake of Ys 1 & 2 (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-ch-49-en-70-3ds9.html), this time on the PSP. The screens available make the recent DS remake look like a poor second cousin. Can't wait to play through this game yet again!
