View Full Version : PS3 Price Drop This Season?

Recently, Sony's Kaz Hirai said that Sony will not be lowering prices of the PS3 for the holiday season (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1032). Other sharp-witted Colonists have noted, in the past these very official-sounding statements sometimes come right before a price drop.
What's YOUR take on the matter?

I said no. MS usually gives the "no comment" line, but this was pretty strait foward. Guess we'll find out, though.

If there was going to be a price drop, they would have announced it already. We may see some bundles like MS is doing, but if you're holding out for cheaper consoles I wouldn't hold your breath.

I said no, and I believe in myself.
The reasons for me saying no are based on the absolute stubbornness of Sony and the holiday deals on Blu-ray movies. Black Friday will be THE day this year to pick beef up your Blu-ray collection.

As I said in the other thread, Sony is living in denial. They won't drop the price.

I don't think they will either. My only guess is they are satisfied with sales of the PS3...while maybe not spectacular to us "laypeople"...maybe they see something in the balance sheets we just aren't getting...

Kaz has said no (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170599), so that is what I went with.

Would be good if they did, but I'd be pissed. I just bought one. I hate when the price on something drops right after I buy it. heh.

I wish they'd lower the price so I can merit buying one sooner. Unfortunately, I don't see them lowering the price any time in the near future.

I don't think they will or should. They don't have to outsell the other systems this Christmas. They are only competing against themselves. Eventually people are going to want BluRay players and the PS3 is gradually building an appealing library. They will get where they need to go at the current pace. No need to bleed themselves financial to get there quicker.

Kaz? That you? Because if not, I don't know why you would think they should keep their prices high.

Because they aren't competing with the other systems. They are only competing with themselves to remain profitable. They have already dropped the price $200 over the last year. They need to start making some of their investments back.
Thinking that you have to "out run" other companies is short sighted thinking. They aren't running a sports team. They are running a business.

I think they should drop it, so I voted yes. But I don't think they will.

Doubtful, I have a feeling Sony still thinks people want to buy Blu-ray players; And Sony has yet to put the PS3 at a price point at or below their cheapest models.

But I'm not talking about them competing with other companies. I was just saying it's odd to me that you want them to keep their price high. It doesn't benefit you for that to happen (unless you own stock, I guess...).

Yeah... wouldn't a ubiquitous install base be better for Bluray AND PS3 game developers?

Supposedly they aren't making money anyway.

Maybe they're worried about losing less?

I think I'm gonna go with a "it would be awfully nice of them," but I kind of feel like it isn't going to happen. Who knows, maybe they are being hush hush about it. Either way it doesn't effect me much seeing as how I have owned a 60gig' from the beginning (2nd one BTW.)

What happened to your 1st one? It is rare that I hear about people needing a replacement PS3. They are solid machines.

It refused to come on. Lights or anything. Not sure what happened as one night I stopped playing on my own and the next day it refused to come on. I think it was karma from rubbing the RRoD of my friend in his face. Either way I still use the Life box (? not the coffin, but the return box the new one comes in) as a carrying box when I move my PS3 around.

Under warranty? Replaced by Sony?
I have to say, I'm a little scared that if mine were to break, that I'd be stuck with a newer model that won't play PS2 games.

Under warranty and replaced. Actually the whole thing was relatively painless besides the shipping time. Good turn around time too though. TheEvilNarWhale reminded me that they probably learned something from the whole PS2 debacle.

That is such awesome news! I love when a company stands by their product and treats the customer right. Glad you had a painless experience and that Sony hooked you up right. :D
