Codemasters has announced a release date for their realistic military shooter: Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. The game will be released for the PS3, 360 and PC in the US on October 6, Europe on October 8 and the UK on October 9. They've also given us a new "Armory" trailer, which shows off some of the weapon systems in the game.

This game is looking better and better with each trailer I see. That artillery strike at the end looked badass.

Pfffft. You got scooped (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=10404) on this one by like 9.5 hours. :p

Oh, and armoury has a U in it... They're Brits.

From what I understand, that's a 1,000 lb. JDAM. I'm also hearing rumors that the smoke hangs around for a while, making it a bitch to see through if you move in.

I was hopeful for a September release but this will do. With everyone so focused on COD6 they will need to get a demo out before launch to build up some hype.

I couldn't help but be amused by the fact that the US gets it first.

So does this have a commander/squad style structure to it in MP, like how BF2 had a commander that issued orders down to teammates and called in artillery, vehicles and supplies? The most fun I had in Battlefield 2 was when I would hold a Control Point and just sit there while playing commander and watching the battlefield, issuing orders, pointing out enemies and laying the smackith down with my Arty Strikes.

It would be neat to actually *feel* the heavy weapons while on the battlefield, and see them actually effect the terrain. Imagine a massive firefight between a few buildings, calling in the arty and seeing the actual battlefield reacting to it. The dust sounds awesome, and to see massive craters in the ground to use as cover while moving in would just totally put it over the top for me.

They're pretty mum on multiplayer details so far, but my personal guess is that there is no commander mode (unfortunately). The game seems much more focused on squad level tactics, and giving orders on screen using a context sensitive system. Of course, we're still 11 weeks out from release and an awful lot remains to be seen, so there's still plenty of room for surprises on that front.

I'm also pretty confident that there is no terrain deformation in the game, however all buildings are supposedly fully destructible... so you won't be able to take cover in a crater, but with any luck, you will be able to crawl around behind the busted ass remains of buildings that used to be there. The destruction is also supposed to be persistent throughout the campaign, so structures destroyed in early missions will remain that way... and possibly pose a problem if you need them later on.

Oh well, I guess I will still just have to wait for a proper BF2 sequel/remake.

Until then, I think this game is shaping up to be a serious hit, at least from all the footage and fapfap fapable screenies you keep posting. :)

Hopefully there are plenty of bridges & roads that are destructible to make things a pain in the ass for the enemy.
