Well, nobody else seemed to be doing it, so I set us up a league.

The Colony of Gamers Goblet.

The league password is immortalmachines

I was unsure about how the leagues work, so I set up a 16 team league.

Rules
Default, turn based Blood Bowl Classic.
Minimum team value 1
Maximum team value 5000
I wanted to leave it open to all CoGers, if it's out of your league don't join. I'm in and I will get blitzed, who cares :)

The match frequency is set to Free so you can play whenever you feel like.

Shoot me a friends invite to Squidbot.

See you on the pitch, gentlemen, I look forward to being hideously embarrassed by you all as I stumble along with my Orc team; Orcrington Stanley.

Pre Season Teams at present:

1. The Sacrificial Goats Silentscreams Chaos
2. The Khorne-Holers SlyMarbo Chaos
3. Orcrington Stanley Squidbot Orc
4. The Angry Grummblers rune_74 Orc
5. CoG Pestilence IINtrude Skaven
6. The Empires Finest Airosh Human
7. Feywild Plumbers ShivaX Wood Elf
8. Nurgle's Nipples Pantsless Chaos

I'll have to whip something up and join tomorrow when I get a moment.

You might want to set a custom competition and set the matches to "Challenges" so that we aren't automatically paired up against specific people right off the bat. At least I think thats how it works, I'm not sure since I haven't actually seen one in action since the beta (the pre-arranged matches and the impending end of the beta killed that before anyone played a single game).

I'm up for whatever, we can always use this thread to try to arrange times to play or whatever, though the nature of their system makes sitting online waiting for someone a little annoying (ie you'll get bombarded by people if you have any public teams).

I'd hope we see a good mix of races so I'll play whatever since I like them all. Hell I'll even play Goblins, though be warned my objective when I play them tends to be to maim as many people as possible so your SPPs aren't free.

Hmm, I didn't see any options for Challenges when I was setting it up.
Oh well, let's see how it goes. If necessary I can always delete the league and set up a new one as it appears to only let you manage one league at a time.

Yeah you can only have one.

Oddly the options for competitions and leagues are hidden under options or something like that. You have to customize them there, then save your settings so you can go online and then pick your settings off a list. Why you can't just do all that online when you're creating a league is beyond me. I blame them being French. :)

I'm thinking it would be nice if anyone entering created a new team just for this league, but I didn't want to make that a hard rule.

Huh. I get some strange error message about not being able to join the league while my team is in a public league. And I've never joined a league.

Anyone know how to fix this?

slhunter
07-04-2009, 09:14 AM
First, highlight the team that you want to use in the league. Then, click the button for Quit Current League (since all teams are immediately added to the Public League when created). Then you'll be able to join. Like I said, just make sure that you highlight the team that you want to use, so you don't drop one of the other teams out (although I don't know if there's anything bad that happens if you take a team out of the Public League and then put them back in).

slhunter
07-04-2009, 09:16 AM
What is the preferred time zone for this league? I noticed that you are in UK, while I'm in the US. I keep quite odd hours at times, so I may be able to find a common time, but I still wanted to know the general times that you (and everyone else planning on joining) will be available.

Squidbot
07-04-2009, 10:14 AM
First applications are in and accepted.
The league cannot start until there are enough teams, so after say another week if we do not have enough teams we can reroll the league with less teams.

slhunter
07-04-2009, 10:35 AM
Are these new teams we should be using or existing ones? If the maximum team value is 5000, then someone could be using a heavily upgraded team against someone who just created theirs for the league. I've got a 1300 point team that I could use, but I could also use one that's at/around 1000...

I created a new team and just added the CoG tag in front of the name so I could reuse some of my favorite names I have already acquired. I am for everyone starting off with fresh teams. Don't really relish the idea of my brand new team facing off against a heavily mutated one right off the bat. :)

Alright, I sent in a team, a Human team, haven't really played humans before. I called them "The Empires Finest". They are a freshly made team of course, I only made one other online team and they were Wood Elves. I played one game with them, got stomp and didn't play them again.

Well had an online game that wasn't as fun as the others I had...

I started playing said hi and got nothing....2 injuries to him later and a couple lucky rolls on my part and I get "hard to do well with stuff like this happenin..." I'm like what stuff and he says do you really have to ask...he then pouts through the first half of the game...I take out about 6 or 7 guys by the end....but due to some bad rolls on my part he ends up getting a TD...

But god, its a game quit crying like a baby and blaming everything on luck....really left a bad taste in my mouth

Squidbot
07-04-2009, 07:05 PM
Indeed, which is one of the reasons I set up this league. So I can just play with you people, and not a bunch of whiney babies, or gloating noob callers.
I hate playing with the general public, there are so many assholes out there.

My favorite is when they have 0-2 rerolls and a Big Guy on a starting team and whine about rolls. I mean yeah, sometimes the luck screws you, but if you have 0 rerolls its definately going to bite you in the ass. Especially on a Chaos team. Good lord.

Heh, now I got myself in an arguement with this guy on their forums about cdkeys online and hwo you can buy a key for the game at 20 dollars...

Some guy joined right after the owner of that site joined and defended his position saying it was totally legal....and I noted his location and mentioned he most likely works with him due to the high level illegal software problems in asia...then boom now I'm a racist:P

How close are we to playing?

slhunter
07-05-2009, 01:07 PM
I'm still curious what Time Zone this league is geared toward... I see that Squidbot is in the UK, so does that mean that most of the players will be playing during a UK-friendly Time Zone? I keep odd hours, especially during the weekends, and would likely be able to find time to play with people on "UK-time", but I also may have better luck joining some other league that plays on "US-time" allowing even more opportunity to play.

Perhaps, if we get enough people on here interested, we can have a US league and a UK league? I may have 2 others who can play if we do a US league, but I seriously doubt that they'd be able to play on "UK-time".

Oooh, i need to update my location, not that it affects this, but anyway: I'm in Ireland but i work nights, so I will mostly be playing in hours more suitable to the U.S/Canada.

As for how close we are to playing: Not that close. we are still about 10 teams short last time I checked. If by tomorrow the league does not look to be filling up we can make a new one with just those who signed up in this thread.

But god, its a game quit crying like a baby and blaming everything on luck....really left a bad taste in my mouth

Yeah, had a game like this on the weekend. Guy starts whining right before kick off because two guys on my Chaos team have the claw skill and how i'd obviously only made the team to hurt the opposition.

I was like "duh, that's the way Chaos wins, since they can barely pick up the ball let alone pass and catch, besides which, you're playing dwarfs who are the same". He then whined the whole match whenever I took his players down to the point of complaining that he'd have to remake the team because one dwarf died.

From what I've seen of public there's a tonne of people that just won't accept challenges from Chaos, Dwarves, Orcs, Gobbos or Lizards at all because they're afraid of losing players, they just want to stick to an elf/human/skaven passing contest (though not above using the big guys on those teams to hurt the opposition either)

Highlight the team you want, then go over and pick "Quit League". It should prompt you about leaving the "Open League" or something, pick yes. Then find the CoG League with that team (team name should be red showing its not in any League), then apply, put in the password and wait for Squidbot to approve it.

I'm still debating on what team to make. What isn't getting played? I like all the teams and I want some variety. I don't think anyone has said Woodies, Goblins or Lizards, but I might be overlooking something.

Edit: Looks like we got Lizards, so maybe I'll go with Wood Elves or Goblins, though Goblins invariably start to frustrate me after a while, I do love the Secret Weapons.

Squidbot, I'm in too, but haven't joined the league yet. I'm still trying to decide which team to use. Please be sure to include me in your headcount for this league. Also, the min/max for team values is just for the joining the league, not beyond that. When you reform, I think that you should decide what the highest value team you want to be allowed to join should be (rather than leaving it at 5000). If you want people to only use newly created teams, then capping the team value at 1000 is the way to go. It would be much better if all the teams are in the same range.

Rune_74
07-05-2009, 09:13 PM
Well I don't think you have to be on at a certian time for games just of we are playing weekly try and find a time in the week...I could be wrong here though...

Be careful in public league that you don't get sucked into a 45 second match. what a match of frustration that can be...my chaos lost to a goblin because I didn't even have time to blink and stand my guys up are anything...I don't mind losing if I canmove all my guys and its my fault but when I can move maybe one are two guys in a round and he has guys with stumpy trait and can run well....frustration.

Squidbot

I'll hold off on resetting the league to a smaller nuber of teams for a while yet.
As I said, the play times are set to free, which i believe means that you can play whenever you can play, no limits on daily or weekly matches.
I'll do some more homework tomorrow on the league rules as it seems the BB community are all a little confused about the rules.
I can't do much today as I have had a bitch of a day so far and am pretty much broken.

Were getting so close to starting this league, im pretty excited! While I wait I continue to play my campaign with my orcs! Today i had a match against Wood Elves. They are so weak! I had about 6 causalities to them. They of course had Jordell Freshbreeze their star play. Everyone has had a star player against me in the last like 5 games. But anyways in this match I pushed Jordell off into the sidelines and he DIED! I had no clue star players could be murdered! I assume though he can just be recruited again and every like it never happened, but I was still surprised. Unfortunately it was the second last turn and I wasn't able to take full advantage of his death. I won 2-1 anyways with a 19/20 rating. (I've never gotten 20/20 yet!)

This is true to some extent, but I really try to go into each game putting myself into the best position to succeed. Sure, even the best/safest plans don't work out sometimes, but that's just that Blood Bowl for you. It really feels like sometimes that the key is really to avoid rolling the dice if at all possible, even if you have a 5/6 chance of succeeding.

Obviously, if 1 guy has 10 bad rolls in the game while the other only has 3, chances are that the bad roller will be lucky to tie. However, it really does feel like more often than not the bad rolls are fairly equal for both sides with variances only being a roll or 2... Having re-rolls in the "bank", as well as skill re-rolls, help avoid critically important bad rolls... unless you fail the re-roll too.

That's nothing inherent to the goblins, it sounds like people are just choosing shitty turn limit settings. This of course, comes as no surprise after the plethora of 30-second one round matches in SF4 online.

Multiplayer games would be so fun, if it wasn't for the other people you have to play them with.

The reason it benefits Goblins more than most, I suspect, is because they are inherently good at dodging through tackle zones, and less turn time gives you less time to set up and prevent them from playing the running game.

It's hard to be good at a game where one unlucky dice roll can ultimately spell your doom.
You can stack the odds in your favor, but in the end it's all down to those pesky dice.

My thrower with sure hands failed to pick up the ball on the kickoff after I took all my other safe moves. Skaven ran right by, picked it up, and scored. That's luck for ya.

Of course, I just had a game with my human team where I outbashed the Dwarf team. Luck again. Three casualties on my end, but none of them were severe enough to warrant an apothecary use.

ShivaX

People cheat online with goblins...40 seconds turn length gives them an advantage...thats the only thing I hate about goblins.

They do it with bashing teams as well. With a dwarf team you can just mindlessly click block and come out ahead of the other team since the numbers are in your favor. Meanwhile the other team doesn't have time to plan any moves.

You can, but getting a game can be a pain in the ass at times. Since every team anyone has is on the list you'll often not get games by challenging people (since they're afk, cherry-pickers or just don't feel like playing that team at the moment). So when someone challenges you its pretty easy to click yes, especially since you don't have a ton of time to think about it.

I've gotten to the point that the first thing I look at is the time now. Then TV, then maybe race, though typically I don't care much on that end of things.

It's not an exploit, you can choose not to accept the invite :P 40s games with two similar teams are actually pretty fun, and it means you're not committing over an hour to one game.

But it does mean you can't think about any moves. Hell you can barely move all your guys when you add in waiting for animations and a little lag. The Public League says its 4:00 turns. I honestly don't mind 2 or even 3 minute turns most of the time, but 0:40 is just stupid. People should just play RT if they want that.

Invariably every game with that low of a time is someone whos geared their entire team towards exploiting it. A team of tons of dwarves all with Guard so he doesn't have to calculate anything and will win most blocks. Teams of agile teams with only Dodge to take advantage of not being able to cover things, etc, etc.

Good luck if your team isn't a homogenous blob of the same guy. While you find and click on the dude with Strip Ball your turn ended, much less if you want to figure out a chain block or hand-off/pass situation.

Saladin
07-11-2009, 09:52 PM
I like 2 minute turns as a good medium.. 4 minutes is far too long. With 32 turns all up it can take almost 2 hours for one game, especially in public league where guys deliberately wait out the first 2 minutes doing nothing in the hope you'll get frustrated and quit.

slhunter
07-11-2009, 10:51 PM
I like 3 min., although I'm pretty solid on 2 now... I've played a 40 sec once (and won). You can't do 3 in leagues, though. 4 min is probably the best way to go with guys relatively new to Blood Bowl or the online interface. If another league gets started up, 2 min will probably be the way to go.

|Yes you can chose, however they are hoping you don't see the time limit set so they can take advantage....like a previous poster stated it favors a good dodging team like goblins...since you can block all their guys since you don't have time...its a scam, one I only fell for once but it can happen.

I honestly don't think tht the majority of people are trying to catch an unsuspecting opponent. I really think that it's more of a case of people trying to level up their team quickly by getting in as many games as possible. I just don't see how someone could really enjoy playing 40 sec...

You go through a regular Match to Match schedule... So, basically, you'll need to try to coordinate a time to play via in-game mail, on these forums, or in the League-created chat room...

slhunter
07-15-2009, 08:21 PM
everyone in the league should regularly visit that chat room, if you have trouble finding it, post here and I'll try to help. Basically, the default chat room is set up for Public chat and you just click the arrow next to it for a drop-down list...

Also, is there perhaps a better place where we can set up a Week by Week match-up organizing thread?

The first league game to be played was between the Angry Grummblers and the Woodland wisps. Trust me when I tell you this, there was no love lost between these teams...and if there was....it was lost in blood.

This game was violent folks, were talking elves flying here and there....seeing 4 seriously injured, one smashed to bits and a suspension. When the Grumblers finaly payed any attention to the ball there were only four elves on the field.

Hidepuke, the rather large and stupid troll had this to say about the game "Elves good, crunchy."

It was not all grog in this game though, as the grummblers lost Vrasub to injury when the stinkin elves surrounded him, yeah pick on the runt. I guess we saw how that turned out. At one point the elves where just over the touchdown line when he lost his grip on a slick patch of blood and puke, tumbling to the ground and losing the ball. He was then dispatched from the game. The final few minutes saw a rallying cry from the elves and another puke slip and slide.

All in all, a great game in the tradition of Blood bowl, putting the blood back in the bowl!

I'll go ahead and say what I think everybody else is avoiding saying--

Having to play matches with assigned opponents, and the scheduling involved, really killed my interest in playing. I was hoping it'd be like the tabletop league I played a couple years back where you could play with anybody in the league, anytime you wanted. You know, hop on IRC or Steam, see who's around, and give them a challenge on the spot. Yes, people who play more often get better teams, but you could only count the results from a certain number of your games towards the finals.

I don't know when my free time is going to be in advance, so I can't really try and schedule too far in advance for a game.

(Ironic for a Time Lord, I know.)

I kinda predicted something along these line might happen.

I'd recommend as a possible alternative trying to agree on a time once a week or so and seeing how many people can make it and going from there. Of course given our world-wide community that might not be easy by any means, but if nothing else we can always attempt Euro and North American Leagues or something.

Yeah, I'm finding it a little tricky too at the moment. Work has recently become very unpredictable, and I'm having to be pretty flexible (to the point of going in and working on a few hours notice) and making plans around that while also compensating for time zones is difficult.

I'm on board with ShivaX's idea personally. Those who can make it can play whoever they want, and those who can't don't inconvenience anybody else. They really should provide support for a league based on such a format in the game. They must know how hard it is to get 8 fixed pairs of people together at the same time just to progress through one round of league matches.

I've gone off public league almost entirely now too. Keep running into teams that have obviously gamed the system; probably by playing their mates who stand back and let them score as many touchdowns as they want, with who they want.

e.g. Orc teams at 1500 rating who somehow have managed to get all 4 black orcs with 2 skills (usually block/guard), which just doesn't happen unless someones feeding those guys touchdowns.
