And yet another reason I will never, ever, EVER vote Liberal.

This time around it was an especially bitter pill to swallow no matter who you voted for.

And dear lord... that clip... Dion is a great policy wonk but if you can't wrap your head around such a simple hypothetical question, I fear for how you'll run a country. Granted, he might just be thinking in typical Lawyerese, where you can't get to the nugget of the question being asked and instead have to fight your way through the forest of details in order to obfuscate things.

Ouch. That said, his English is about on par with Harper's French. ;)

This election makes me so happy I'm in Jack Layton's riding.

I'm in the "the question doesn't make sense" camp.

"If you were prime minister now, what would you have done?"

Image consultants fed him answers to "if you would have been elected at the previous elections" and "if you're elected tuesday".
He had his answer for what was to be done on tuesday. He had his answer for what was to be done if he had won last elections (with a 30-day plan or whatever he was rambling about).
So he was trying to patch two pre-made answers to one messed up questions. It's all right.

I still won't vote for him because he's got a "I despise you all" attitude, Trudeau-style. But that question, for him, was a trap.

In fairness, English is not his first language. I think I'm voting NDP, Layton seems like the best choice.

I would have voted Layton because he has that sexy moustache, but May is hot, so she got my vote.

Hee hee...

I thought May came off really well in the debate, actually having lots of information to back up all her claims, instead of making claims with no proof/evidence.

10-12-2008, 10:59 AM
I got really pissed at Layton when he wanted to keep May out of the debates. I've voted NDP in every election I've been a part of, but that move along with his poor debate performance makes me not want to vote for them again.

I have no idea who I'm going to vote for this Tuesday. The only thing that's sure is that it won't be for Harper.

EDIT: As for the video, I'm not a big fan of Dion, but I think the question was poorly worded. I understand the intention of the question, but Dion seemed to want to ground it in reality, so if he were Prime Minister, that means he would have had to have been elected in the previous election.

I actually did vote for May in the early election. She impressed me in a few of the interviews I've listened to of her, I like the Green's mix of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism and while I did vote NDP in the last election and I like Jack Layton to a degree (he's nothing if not a personality), he's said some stuff both in the house and out, in the campaign and before it, that just rankled me.

There's a lot of pandering going on with the NDP right now and it just bugs me when I get the feeling that I'm being played. The Greens have at least been acting with a bit of dignity over the course of the campaign and I feel like I can actually unplug my nose when I go to vote for them, at least for now.

I'm someone who has ranged all over the spectrum both in my views and how I've voted. I used to vote PC all the time. The current Conservatives are NOT the same thing as the PC party of yore but I don't think they're the anti-Christ either. I have voted and agreed with the NDPs in the past. I just voted Green this past election (I think I might have voted Green in the last too, but I forget). The only party I have never voted for and can't ever envision myself voting for is the Liberals. The day I vote Liberal will be the day I have really either taken leave of my senses or have finally been able to get over the anger I still feel towards how they ran things over the course of the Chretien/Martin era.

And this, my friends, is probably the longest and most vocal you'll ever see me get in a politics thread :)

The Greens are the only ones who I really have respect for since they don't resort to smear advertising and mud throwing. I saw an ad in the paper for Liberals the other day which said "Any vote but Liberals is a Conservative vote," implying that vote-splitting would make the Conservatives win unless you voted Liberal, which rubbed me the wrong way especially since there is such a Green presence where I'm from.

Nameless
10-12-2008, 01:53 PM
It's definitely worth voting Green if you're a proponent of their party this time around, as there are lots of ridings where they'll actually have a chance to win. Hopefully next Parliament sees them with a few seats that they've actually earned, I'm all for more parties.

How is that in fairness? Because he is a pea soup eater he gets a pass? Visente Fox and Amadinejad speak english as a second language, yet still speak intelligently in it.

Especially when you consider we're a bilingual country. If you plan on being PM, you better be fluent in both.

Eh. Harper's not fluent in both and he's a PM. There have been many PMs who couldn't speak both fluently. I say as long as you can communicate fluently in one of the two languages and at least passably well in the other, you're good enough.

I did a facepalm when I found out that Dion snagged the liberal leadership. There were other people in the running whom i felt were much stronger leaders, so how the hell did Dion win? He always looks like he's about to burst into tears.

I don't want Harper to get a majority, but voting for Dion is just.... ugh.

EDIT: For our American friends, think of it this way: Dion is Canada's Palin. Basically.

It's funny though -- as much as people rag on Chretien, I still have to give him major props on what has to be the best decision ever by a Canadian PM: Refuse to go into Iraq.

That said, the way the Liberals scuttled military spending for almost the entire time they were in power, well, it's not like we had much left to send by the time the decision came around.

I am very happy we didn't throw in our lot with that whole mess though. Ye gods...

Never mind kidding!

When I said before that I'm glad I live in Layton's riding, it's specifically because I get to vote ML while still knowing that my man Jack is going to win his seat.

Jack Layton is seriously and heavily committed to his riding, but there's something about seeing those [2-3] votes tally up for the Marxist-Leninist party that I can't help myself..

Heh. That's awesome Bingley. I kind of feel the same about my riding. It's so uber-Conservative that I will eat a controller if someone other than the sitting Conservative guy wins. I'd almost be tempted to vote for the guy because he is a nice guy and does well for the riding but he is for a party that I just can't vote for in good conscience these days. I want to see the Greens become a serious player in further elections so I don't mind giving them my vote.

If there was a fringe group outside of the CHP in my riding I would vote for them but there's no way I'm giving those nut jobs my vote, even in jest.

Unfortunately, casting a vote for a major underdog candidate will only be of any use once we get proportional representation. I was shocked it didn't get voted in. Some day....
